My idea of an atlas is a book with maps, and plenty of them. This is especially important for a historical atlas. There isn't anything wrong with accompanying the maps with brief and concise historical narratives, but in my opinion some historical atlases take this too far. After all, most people who are fond of reading about history are looking for an atlas which serves as a supplement to more detailed history books. Of the three "Big Daddy" historical atlases I own, (the DK, the Times, and the Oxford), this one seems to do the best job at serving that purpose.
As other reviewers noted, the type is too small. But in addition, the color codes are often so close to one another that it takes a magnifying glass to see what the boundaries are. The editors made a poor choice of not matching page size to the amount of material they're trying to present. Basically, I gave up on the book because it took too much effort to read.Perhaps the material is excellent. I don't know.
The atlas is set up with themes and has a good balance of maps and text to explain events. It covers facets of world history I haven't see together since I was in school. It will make a good reference and interesting to pick up to read a couple of pages (a theme) at a time. Maps are smaller than I'd like, but they're ok. Text is a little small for older eyes.
This is it! This is the reference book that provides wonderful maps and excellent summaries of major cultures, nations, and development topics. East, West and everywhere in between, all from early hominids through the 20th century. The atlas is extensive and the summaries are very well written and accessible to adults without any study of history. In fact, that is why I purchased this book. My wife wanted to learn about how civilizations developed from their beginning to today, and to see where these events took place by maps. This book exceed all expectations.
Very cool with lots of information, but the print is small and can be difficult for some readers
Full of maps, but it's also a (very) compact textbook. Occasionally there are some other pictures - probably as part of the textbook part. Good compainion for the other item I recommend (The Encyclopedia of World History, Peter N. Strearns). Note: I'm not using the book for study/school.
If you don't know much about history but would like to you would want to start reading history books. But you should also take a look at this visualization of the various stages of history--prehistory, early farming, early urbanization, etc. The book tries to show where civilization began and developed. If you are interested in, say, the Indian sub-continent, you'll have to skip from one section to another to another. Similarly with those interested in Europe or America or Africa or China. The effort itself will make you aware of the other parts of the world. Leaf through this book and you will marvel over how much there is to learn about other countries and civilizations. I do not know if this is the Best of its kind but it is pretty darn good!
Not as easy to read as the World History Atlas by Jeremy Black, 11/2004. I gave it as a gift who shared same interest as my husband.Suggested to have a magnifier handy.
