I recently bought this book and have been crocheting up a storm of snowflakes. I love the gallery section (Snowflake Showcase) which allows you to preview all 100 snowflakes. It is fun to see them in not just pure white, but also in pastels. The project gallery in the back offers photo ideas of ways you can use your finished snowflakes, such as coasters, notecard embellishments, as well as ornaments. This section has inspired a couple of holiday gift ideas for me. I have also made one "snowflake" in worsted weight yarn and can see potential in using some of the patterns in a larger scaled project, such as an afghan. The instruction section is arranged with three levels of difficulty. There are 30 beginner patterns, 40 intermediate and 30 advanced. Each pattern has a clear, colored photo of the snowflake. The instructions are very clearly written and so far I haven't come across any errors. In addition to the written instructions, each snowflake pattern has a symbol chart, which I find helpful. Very uniquely and adding to the fun, each pattern in this book has a snow or ice related name, such as Droxtal, Ice Prism or Boreas, along with a short definition of the name. And of course, each snowflake has exactly six points. (I mention this, because of another crochet pattern book that features snowflakes with more than six points.)This is a wonderful book, both as a pattern book and as a picture book.2-NOV-2012 UPDATE: During my recent surgery recovery, I gave myself the goal of making all 100 snowflakes. I can now report I have done this....I've made all 100! I used Size 3 thread and a 2.25 mm hook for all snowflakes, so mine are a bit bigger than those in the book. Depending on the complexity, each snowflake took me somewhere between 15 and 45 minutes to stitch. (Weaving in ends and blocking added another few minutes each.)I've uploaded a few photos to Amazon, including a series of photos taken of snowflakes before, during and after blocking. I highly recommend blocking! I used heavy spray starch, spraying them while they lay on a cloth, then pinning them to the blocking boards I made using the book's instructions. The spray starch gave the snowflakes a bit of body and helps them hold their nice shape, without making them stiff.I did want to report my experience with the patterns themselves. I used a combination of the written instructions and the charts, sometimes relying more on one than the other, but generally consulting both. With only a few exceptions, I had no troubles with either. Considering that there are 100 patterns, the fact that I found errors on only five of them, is quite remarkable. ~ On Snowflakes #21, #43 and #73, the written instructions did not agree with the chart on Rounds 5, 2 and 5, respectfully. Snowflake #66 had an unnecessary written "fasten off" instruction on Round 3, the pattern having been an expansion of the previous snowflake. And Snowflake #74's chart had an unnecessary "floating" chain 3. (13-JAN-2013 Update: Pattern #84's written pattern does not match the chart on Round 1)And, if you are wondering what I'm going to do with 100 snowflakes, most will be going to my church's annual holiday bazaar, but a few will grace my own Christmas tree. Happy Stitching!

I had no idea how to crochet when I bought this book, but I brought it along to pass the time on a weekend car trip. Within an hour or so, I had learned the basics of crochet and was well into my first snowflake! By the end of the trip, I had made ten different snowflakes - they came out beautifully, and I was amazed by how easy it was to learn how to create them. The patterns are lovely and unique - the fact that the author created 100 truly distinct patterns is very impressive; each one is gorgeous, and they all really are different (just like real snowflakes!). And if 100 isn't enough, there is even a section in the book with advice on how to go about inventing your own original snowflake designs. The Showcase section is a great visual guide that you can use to pick out which design you'd like to try, or if you're just learning, you can start with the first pattern and work your way forward through the book, because they are all organized by difficulty. This book would be a wonderful gift for the crocheter in your life (or someone who might LIKE to crochet), and is also a perfect way to create your own handmade gifts. I love this book, and look forward to using it for many more crochet projects!

First, the good things: (1) Great production value -- nice heavy pages & excellent photos; (2)a "gallery" of snowflakes in many colors so you can see the variety & which ones appeal, (3) really excellent instructions with both written instructions and a diagram, (4) some of the "advanced" snowflakes are as pretty as any I have seen, (5) everything is well explained to newcomers in snowflakes and/or thread crochet, (6) many of the snowflakes hold their shape well and that provides instant satisfaction. The things that I was not happy with: (1) With a hundred snowflakes, I would have expected a lot of variety, but instead they are all very much alike. They change in the details, and they're nicely designed, but if you compare them with other snowflakes out there (search "crochet snowflakes"), they are way too similar. (2) None of them have any spires. Complex borders are one of the coolest (haha) things about snowflakes, spires included, but these are just missing. In general, the borders are solid and similar. (3) They have a very limited vocabulary of stitches. For example, there might be one approximation of a picot loop/fan in the whole book, and there is not a single cluster stitch. For people who are new to this and don't know what I'm talking about, these techniques are not hard, and you could easily learn them from the basic skills in this book. Why on earth does she not include these beautiful and easy to learn types of stitches/pattern elements? That would make for more variety. (4) The "beginner, intermediate, advanced" snowflakes should really be called, "small, medium and large." I am not the greatest crocheter in the world, but IMO there are no advanced snowflakes in this book. (5) These snowflakes seem to be designed for instant gratification (which is why they have no spires, which take longer to complete than non-spire patterns). There could really have been a progression from easy to advanced, introducing new elements as you went along, but the patterns are all meant to be completed in an hour (depending on your speed, experience and skill) and that means there can't be some of the best elements in snowflakes. (6) The section on designing snowflakes is useless, except for the part that suggests you use these as a base and add your own borders. Now if only they would show you some of the neat things you can do on borders, that would be great.I'm glad I got this book and have made a number of the snowflakes in it, but I was frustrated because it wasn't what it could have been.

Phoebe and Her Unicorn (Phoebe and Her Unicorn Series Book 1), by Dana Simpson

From School Library Journal

Gr 4 Up—Simpson's syndicated comics featuring the unlikely friendship between an awkward young girl and an arrogant unicorn are published as one volume for the first time. Phoebe, a somewhat precocious nine-year-old, releases a unicorn held captive underwater by a magic spell. In exchange for her freedom, the unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils grants Phoebe one wish, namely that the two will become best friends. Although imaginary childhood friends such as Hobbes and Winnie-the-Pooh are common, Simpson's take on the subject is unique and witty. Marigold is not invisible but often goes unnoticed, protected by a "shield of boringness." Simple line drawings bring the characters to life without detracting from the clever dialogue. Phoebe's face is particularly expressive, mirroring her wonderment and frustration with her recently acquired friend. The intended audience for this work is unclear. While the protagonist expresses her longing for a best friend, delights in sleepovers, and is enchanted with the mythical creature, there is an underlying sarcastic and mocking tone throughout. Facetious one-liners, such as "Terrible Vortex of Meh" and "summon your inner unicorn" may appeal to a more sophisticated audience. Reference to bathroom humor and several variations on "stupid," such as "stupidbutt" are obviously aimed at younger readers. Still, those looking for something to read after Jenni Holm's "Babymouse" books (Random), might want to take a look.—Barbara M. Moon, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

I love comics (The Best, hands down, truly everyone friendly comic is Breaking Cat News!!)and I love sharing the good ones with my kids and family. Phoebe and Her Unicorn are at the top of our list.My second daughter is what I would call a "reluctant reader." She just feels "meh" about reading. I decided to get this for her because it is a great comic about a little girl and her unicorn. (I read it myself, daily, on my GoComics App.) I feel like there should be more out there like this. I mean, boys have Calvin and Hobbes, Charlie Brown and Snoopy, Red and Rover, etc. What about little girls? I don't mean girls can't like or read boy centric comics, but as a girl myself, we start to feel a little left out after awhile!Back to this review: Daughter is 8, going on middle age. She is snarky and sarcastic, and loves to come up with her own jokes. I knew this was right up her alley.I presented this to her as a "just because" gift, and she immediately devoured it. She is now reading Phoebe and Her Unicorn a second time through. Looks like we will be purchasing the rest! For the parents who say that Phoebe is too "mean" or sarcastic: I say, you should listen to kids talk to each other. Seriously. Phoebe sounds and acts like a normal little girl. And don't pretend like you were never one to think low of your parents. All children of every generation thinks they know better than their parents! Lighten Up!! It's a comic strip for goodness sake!My daughter is now interested in reading other books, including the Ramona series now. I have Dana Simpson to thank for turning my little girl into a reader, for helping fuel her imagination, and for giving her relatable characters!

Hilarious. My 8 year old daughter loved it and now we're getting the rest of them (ideally at the library). She hasn't been that much of an enthusiastic reader to date, so I was looking for something fun (and not too hard) to read. She couldn't put this down. It's not as cutesy/girly as you would think. Both the main character and the unicorn are very sarcastic-- and hilarious. I highly recommend-- for 2nd, 3rd, 4th (and maybe 5th) graders.

Dana Simpson is my daughter's FAVORITE author because of Phoebe and Heavenly Nostrils! LOL This books reminds me quite a bit of the Calvin and Hobbes series. Very sweet, real life kid concepts and interactions between the two characters. On a parent note. My child is a reluctant reader. The comic strip style of the book is very deceptive in the area of the amount of reading my child actually does with this series. She ends up reading MORE than she would have in a chapter book and there is vocabulary she does not know so she asks us questions. She is also retelling the stories and ideas more often because she relates to the material and the humor that Simpson is great at writing.

Phoebe is an energetic young girl with too much imagination, her Unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils is more lackadaisical, content with her own fabulousness. And they are best friends. It's easy to compare this collection of daily comics to Calvin and Hobbs, Like Calvin Phoebe is filled with imagination as well as the pettiness, cruelty and greed that any child has. Marigold is calming and wise but also vain and conceited. And their interaction can lead to some funny jokes.I got this for our two young girls and it provided several nights' bedtime stories. I'm not sure I would pick it up for myself but did the job of entertaining both the kids and adults. We may pick up more.

I bought this for my 7 year old niece, who really enjoys it, but the humor is just a tad above her level (but it's good stuff for encouraging discussion). However it has quickly become a favorite of her brother (age 10) and my 9 and 8 year old sons (so much so that they'll stay up late reading it together with a flashlight - laughing the whole time). They've moved on to the second book and can't wait for the third one to come out. I've read a bit of it as well and it's absolutely brilliant.Like all really good "kid books" some of the writing is above the targeted level. In my experience kids thrive on that and it encourages them to stretch. It certainly helps that it's really, really funny. I would absolutely encourage you to buy this for any girl or boy in your life who is reading at or above the 4th grade level. Even teens would enjoy this - it's just that good.

This book is fantastic! Our 6 year old loves graphic novels because the pictures help her follow along if she can't make out all the words. There is enough humor that she gets AND plenty to grow into. My husband and I enjoy when we reading it with her - the visuals and gags make her laugh out loud and we're laughing too. We are all big big fans of Calvin and Hobbes, and this has been compared to it (which caught our attention). After reading it, I agree that this series is right up there. It also a bonus that it's a strong unique girl as the lead!

Just finished reading Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson. This graphic novel is hilarious! It reminds me a lot of Animaniacs and Tiny Toons with its layers of jokes for all ages. The art is polished and fun, and I look forward to reading it with my kids when they get older. #readthisnow #ontothenextvolume

From the sample pages online I decided to give this book a try because dry sarcasm is definitely my kind of humor and I figured it would be a book that my young daughter and I could enjoy together. Some of the jokes are over her head (she's almost 5) but she enjoys the pictures and the overall tone and humor of the stories. I grew up with Calvin and Hobbes and there is a reminiscent feel to how this comic is written that I would compare to it. I think you have to have the right sense of humor to fully enjoy these books, but if you do you will appreciate them and want to reread them again.

This is a short story set in the same world as Bardugo's Grisha series. This story is set in Ravka but it is a prequel (timeline wise) it also follows different characters and is more of a folktale than anything else. The story has a very traditional dark folklore tale feel to it and was absolutely engrossing. I was amazed at what a great story Bardugo wove in such a small space. The characters were absolutely engaging and the story just sucked me right in.The woods outside of Duva are said to eat girls, at least that has what Nadya has been raised believing. She gets to test the tale when her evil stepmom forces her out of the house at night and she finds herself at the door of the Witch of Duva herself.Bardugo has said that Hansel and Gretel influenced this folktale, and you can definitely see the influences here...although this tale kind of turns Hansel and Gretel on its head.Nadya is an excellent heroine, she is so easy to sympathize with. She's a young girl with an okay life, but then as circumstances change and her father marries another woman and things get worse and worse for her. She is forced into a desperate situation where she must flee into the forest and confront the very thing that has always haunted her.I was surprised at how engaging and entertaining all of the characters in this story were. They are so well developed and really came alive for me even though this was a very short story. The suspense behind who/what the witch of Duva is and around the strange case of the disappearing girls is absolutely engrossing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time trying to figure out and predict what was going on.There are a lot of twists and turns and by the end of the story no one is who you thought they would be and everyone is different from what you initially expected. The ending totally caught me by surprise, but then when I stopped to think about it I realized that there were a lot of carefully hidden hints throughout the story that supported the surprise ending. It takes a very masterful writter to mislead the reader so deftly and pull such a huge twist that is completely surprising but totally seamless with the rest of the story. This is a dark and twisted folk tale and echoes many of the original Grimm fairy tales. Children are eaten and disappear, and dark things hunt the woods of Duva. Humanity follows a much harsher code and is much crueler than what we typically see in our day to day life now.Overall an absolutely outstanding short story, I absolutely loved it. I immediately went out and bought The Too Clever Fox for my Kindle as well and can't wait to read that. It is amazing that Bardugo can write not only spectacular novels but also spectacular short stories. In my opinion really well done short stories are very hard to write because you have to set up the world, characters, and plot is such a short amount of space. I highly recommend this short story to fans of the Grisha series and to fans of dark and grimm fairy tales.

Okay. This? Was creepy perfect. Just... *shudders* yeah. Although no characters from book 1 put in an appearance, this story easily puts you back into the world of the Grisha. Come to think of it, no Grisha put in an appearance either. That's really beside the point. This world comes alive and pulls you in and twists you up in its mythology.I do love the feel of this town on the brink of the forest. Food is scarce, the people watch their neighbors with cautious eyes as girls begin disappearing, and you know something dangerous is lurking around the edges but you can't quite put your finger on what's what.Lovely, creepy, horrifying, and completely fascinating.-Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal

**4 Stars**Talk about "Creepy"!!!! Wow. At first I thought it was going to be a like Hansel and Gretel, only without Hansel. But it wasn't. It is definitely on the lines of a Fairytale. This isn't a short fantasy story. No, it is a true Fairytale.Leigh Bardugo did a fantastic job with The Witch of Duva. I honestly had no idea the outcome until it was happening. And again - creepy! Oh, and when I say Fairytale - I'm not talking one that you read to your kids at night. Nope, I am talking one of the true old style Fairytales where it gets gruesome and dark. The only thing I don't get is why this is considered part of the Grisha series. I know it takes place in the same country, but it has nothing to do with the series and is written in a different style as well.Great read. Highly recommended.

At my daughter's urging, I made my first reading foray into a story by Leigh Bardugo, and what a deliciously, creepy tale she's woven! An Eastern European "flavor" permeates The Witch of Duva, making the story smack with authenticity. This flavor derives from the names of her characters and villages, most of which are Slavic. This real twist of originality appealed to me and is also why I gave it five stars. I also loved the taut writing style and imagery of The Witch of Duva.Another twist to this whodunit is who actually did make so many young girls disappear! I never figured it out because of Bardugo's adroit skill at making the reader believe it could only be an obvious someone, whose motives and actions were apparently evil. By the way, the food and eating puns in this review are mostly unintentional!!An added bonus to this short story are the first chapters from Shadow and Bone, a book that takes place in the world of The Witch of Duva as well.I will most definitely read more of Bardugo's stories.

I really enjoyed the flow of the story. I had to reread the section with the witch and Nadya's first encounter because I got lost and a but confused. And the twist at the end was totally shocking. Who knew?! This was the perfect short story.

Wow... just wow... this story definitely shows just how talented Ms. Bardugo is. She totally wove a spell around me, gave me chills and left me feeling creepy. The moral of this story is never assume you know what is really going on, because it's more than likely the last thing you might suspect!

I love the Grisha trilogy and I was excited that companion stories were made since the folktales were mentioned in the books. This was one of my favorites!

This was amazing! It made you think you knew what was going on but the MAJOR TWIST at the end made you realize you didn’t know what was going on and turned the whole story and perception of the story upside down! 10/10
