Essentially, we rarely have any rational control over why we buy some products and not others. This is because our brain subconsciously chooses for us. Traditional marketing methods no longer work in our society and the reasons we think we buy are very deceptive. Martin Lindstrom’s, author of Buyology – Truth and Lies About Why We Buy, main objective is how neuromarketing will change marketing strategies in the future and help us understand the science behind why we buy in relation to the goal of marketers. The main thesis of Lindstrom is expressed in how everything customers believe about why we buy is wrong. Traditional market research, which according to Lindstrom consists of people being directly asked why they made a particular purchase decision, is limited if not completely useless, because in most cases people simply don't know, or are not aware of what drives their purchases. Neuro-marketing is Lindstrom's answer and his novel certainly goes a long way towards testing his ideas, some common sense and some controversial. As a result, Lindstrom’s key arguments are put together as a series of experiments to prove, disprove, or explore theories revolving around what drives customers to buy or not to buy. Product placement doesn’t work because we have to be emotionally engaged in what we see. Product integration, however, does work to an extent if it is continuously brought up, focused on and emphasized subtly. We can especially see this in the real world through visual advertising. Apparently, people remembered 2.21 ads in 2007 (pg.38). Ultimately, ads are so repetitive that our brains block it out. People no longer watch or listen to them, it is simply a break between television shows and movies. Companies are now turning to product integration within media and entertainment in order to involve their products in television and music. Subliminal messaging is everywhere and still highly effective. However, the effectiveness of a company’s logo is dying and the future lies in mirror neurons and logo-free advertising. Lindstrom pushes the idea that logos can even reduce sales of a product for being too loud, causing the customer to mentally shut it out. This phenomenon is called “unconscious emotion” (pg.76). Our brains can remember and recall a visual or brand even before we have consciously realized what it is. Therefore, our brain decides we will buy something before we have even made the conscious decision to do so. For example, the company Marlboro uses everyday objects and styles, such as color schemes and similar symbols, in order to represent the appearance of a Marlboro ad/environment without flaunting their logo. We only need a visual image that reminds us of a product/brand for it to register in our brains and cause a reaction. There is also a link between brands and rituals that exist along with an emotional attachment that stimulates us to buy. Rituals are common within our fast-paced society in an attempt for us to gain some control over our lives. Rituals within products give an “illusion of comfort and belonging” (pg.99). Customers also have a sense of loyalty to a preferred brand, similar to a religious feeling, for products such as shampoo, coffee, and cookies which encourages them to keep buying a specific product. For instance, Nabisco, the parent company who manufactures Oreo cookies, partnered with the “Got Milk?” campaign. This marketing strategy enables customers to associate a brand with a nationwide ritual of dipping Oreos into milk. This creates a sense of familiarity and unity, which ultimately furthers their sales. Living in an overwhelming advertising world of advanced technology, we are highly over stimulated. This causes us to shut down part of our brain to protect it from the immense amount of advertisements. In Lindstrom’s experiment, he found that visual stimulation is more effective if combined with sounds and smell for a more complete experience of the product. He exposed the qualities of using multiple senses to improve a product’s “sensory brand” (pg.143). While sight is the most commonly used sense in marketing, sounds and smell can be far more effective for reaching customers– particularly when paired with visual elements. Color is also very powerful in connecting customers visually with a logo or brand because it can increase chances of recognition by 80%. The discussion the author presents to support his discoveries along with real life examples are very insightful. The sections of his book on sensory branding I thought were most applicable to the real world. Many readers will be shocked by the fact that a logo is not an important aspect of the brand, rather our smell and sound associations can have a much stronger effect, but only if we are unaware of being advertised to. Another really interesting result a study came up with was that viewing cigarette advertising with morbid warnings wasn't an effective strategy toward smoking prevention. Experiment results indicated that when shown multiple images of cigarette packet health warnings, a “craving spot” within subjects’ brain was actually stimulated (pg.14). This experiment, despite almost all subjects claiming they were affected by the health warnings, produced results which suggested they weren’t. The warnings apparently had no effect on discouraging people from smoking; instead it increased their desire to. This demonstrates that what we say we think or feel, is often not mirrored by our brain. Apparently the billions spent on health campaigns are actually helping the tobacco industry as ten million cigarettes are sold every minute. We may think we understand why we buy, but looking closely at our brain suggests very differently. However, Lindstrom doesn't generally explore possible interpretations for his findings. Whenever his hypotheses were confirmed, Lindstrom seemed content and only occasionally attempted to explain why it might be so. He also never includes the measures of actual behavior, being satisfied with only measuring the brain activity and asking various standard market research questions. The main problem I found with Lindstrom’s ground-breaking claims were that the results created a hype that the book fails to satisfy. Despite all the valuable information, he never explained how we could apply his theories to ourselves and the world around us. Even though it is not as ground breaking as it claims to be, I recommend that it is definitely still worth picking up, whether you are a market researcher, advertiser or a general reader interested in neuro-marketing. In conclusion, what I have learned from this book is that we are irrational buyers when it comes to shopping. This is because the emotions triggered in our subconscious mind make up 90% of our purchase decisions compared to the 10% that is associated with our conscious rational brain (pg.195). Therefore, people can’t often explain why we prefer a particular brand for purses, sneakers, or electronic devices beyond stating the obvious attributes. Learning to become more aware of how unconscious desires motivate our buying behavior will become an important marketing tool and Buyology can certainly help in gaining such awareness. Although there is still much to discover about the science behind why we buy - neuroscience is leading the way.

Given, I'm only 2 chapters and the foreword in, but not loving it. It's more focused on brain science, and says what we know -- without an MRI -- that consumers can be irrational. So far, lots of self-love / bragging from the author - this is how much of an expert I am, this is how much companies want me to consult for them, I'm basically a stud - Have yet to get some practical insights that I can apply in what I do. I've put aside for the next book I need to finish in the next 2 weeks. I may return to it if I have time, but if it doesn't improve, this rating won't either.

When was the last time I read a non-fiction book, cover-to-cover in less than two days?Mmmm... never. I am a voracious reader and love to learn, but most of the time, I have to be working through a stack of books, intermittently, to keep my attention. Not so with Buyology. A very *interesting* and *enjoyable* read.My great take-away is all of the examples of how human brains behave differently than they think they are/will... the complexity of it all is astounding! Sure, we’ve known this mis-match has existed for quite some time, but this book provides some concrete explanations for *why* these mis-matches happen. As an educator, the insights of this book have major implications in understanding humanmotivation and behavior. On a lesser note, I agree with some of the comments that there was an occasional tone of bravado, but that could be due to the translation of the author’s Danglish (Danish/English).Overall, however, that did not deter my interest. In fact, I would bet that if you hooked me up to a fMRI or SST scan, my brain would say that it really liked the author’s passion and confidence in the knowledge he was sharing. My metric for rating a book is, “Was it worth my time?” I have to say, “YES! YES! YES!” I can only imagine how insights I gained will continue to circle back to me in the work I do as an educator, entrepreneur, employer, parent, and friend.

As many others have already mentioned, this book is light on content and heavy on self-promotion. I also did not enjoy the tone of the narrator throughout the book - this is personal taste, but his reading felt a bit too dramatic and at times the tone appeared smug which further accentuated the self-promotion aspect of this book. Was it an interesting read overall? Yes. Would I buy this book for a friend? Probably not.

It does, in a way, advertise other companies like some comments have said but the book in itself is attention grabbing. He talks about the experiments and the results and how companies try to market to the consumer in a variety of ways. It is interesting because it offers a new perspective on how you are being manipulated as a consumer. Do not expect this book to teach you how to run a business or to give you an in depth analysis of what each company does and what each product/ad attempts to do to you. If you want thorough analysis to teach you every trick there is, I suggest for you to search a new book. If you want some overall knowledge and idea this is the book!

An absolute total refutation of "Faith Alone" I read James white's book "The God Who Justifies" along with this book. It was an absolute no contest. Dr. Sungenis covers EVERYTHING in scripture about salvation. White's book basically only covers Romans, Galatians, Ephesians and James. If you really want to see what I mean read White's book's chapter on James 2 which states: "Man is justified by works and not by faith alone" and you'll see him twist and contort scripture to try to fit his false theology.

Born & raised a Protestant I was interested in the Catholic view of Justification. This book was instrumental in causing me to start examining the claims of the Catholic church and overcome my anti-Catholic fundamentalism I was born & raised in.I will be welcomed home Easter Vigil 2019.

Sungennis gives the "big picture" of the Catholic doctrine on justification. One minute apologetics and short internet articles can only accomplish so much and often fail to get to the underlying issues. Sungennis, a former Calvinist, puts what appears to be a whole lifetime worth of scholarly thought and research into this book. Although the subject of how one is justified could probably never be completely exhausted, Sungennis has a good go at it.In the first three chapters, Sungennis looks at Catholic soteriology in light of the teachings of Paul, James, and Jesus. He presents and analyzes countless passages that vouch for Catholic teaching and looks at passages that Protestants say teach faith alone theology. He critiques many protestant arguments and builds an impressive case for the Catholic view on how works fit into our salvation. Interspersed throughout the book is a discussion on how many famous Old Testament figures were justified. He spends considerable time on Paul and James' commentary on these Old Testament characters of which Abraham is most often discussed. He really helped the story of Abraham come to life for me, and actually gave me a greater appreciation of God's plan for us and the heroism of Abraham.Of the arguments he employs throughout the book, much of them hit the nail right on the head and, even though I'm a Catholic and certainly have my biases, I think would be very difficult to refute. At other times with certain difficult scripture verses or arguments taken in isolation, he adequately explains how the Catholic interpretation fits into the verse without completely shutting the door on alternative interpretations. In these situations, he tries to bring in both the immediate and larger context that the verse is set in. Ultimately, throughout the book he relentlessly brings torrents of scriptural evidence proving different facets of the Catholic teaching and thus, after seeing the big picture, I think the reader might by willing to believe Sungennis's interpretations of these "toss-up" verses. In the next chapters he explains different facets of the Catholic teaching on justification. Namely, that justification is a process (not a one time event), a familial restoration (not a courtroom acquittal), and an infusion of grace (not a mere forensic covering). In these chapters, I was really able to see how it all fits together in Catholic theology.Considering the difficulty of the topic of predestination, he does a good job setting up the parameters of what the Church teaches on predestination and free will, while critiquing the reformers' various views. This chapter segues into the chapter where he looks at many different personalities of the reformation and, very intentionally, points out some of their more extreme views (with plenty of footnotes) and shows the disharmony and infighting that plagued them as they struggled to work through the details of their theology. Sungennis stated that (I'm paraphrasing) it was his goal that as Protestants see the discord of the reformation that they might take a second look at what they believe.Aside from a few nitpicky things not worth mentioning, I thought that one thing that would have improved the book is a longer discussion on the theology of the cross and a comparison between Catholic and Protestant views on just exactly what the death and resurrection of Christ accomplished. He spends some time on this, but I could have used more - maybe ten to fifteen pages would have been nice.I highly recommend this book to all Christians. It's long but it's well worth spending a little time on this subject and getting it right. I think that all but the most ardent Protestants will find this book convincing, and at the very least will have a new found respect for the Catholic teaching.

Quite an eye opener. The discussion of Paul's concept of faith and good works was illuminating and totally different that I had been taught previously. This was especially evident in his discussion of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. His section of the role of the Commandments should have been obvious to me, but wasn't. It is quite a theological work!

I am not sure if Robert Sungenis would appreciate a positive review of his work on Justification, *Not by Faith Alone* from an active, practicing member of the LDS Church ("Mormonism"), but here goes--this volume is a wonderful resource for those interested in Justification and important issues relating to the debate, both historically and in modern times. With careful rigour, Sungenis refutes the long-standing arguments of Protestant, especially Reformed, theologians and apologists, such as Calvin, Luther, Sproul, White, Zins et al., demonstrating that (1) the Bible does not support the concept of Justification being an external, once-for-all event; (2) that the concept of alien imputed righteousness is foreign to the biblical texts; (3) in some way (though not in a legalistic manner), works do indeed justify, as seen in the case of Phinehas in Ps 106 (cf. Num 25) and both Abraham and Rahab (cf. James 2 [Sungenis also refutes the argument that the noun form of the verb dikaioO in James 2 refers to vindication, not salvific justification) and that the judgment according to one's works in New Testament passages are not merely about rewards in the life to come, but also scenes that determine where one will spend eternity, among many other issues. This is a wonderful volume, and one would do well to study it. Do note, however, that Sungenis does not deal in great detail with the New Perspective on Paul, a movement that refutes the historical Protestant interpretation (read: eisegesis) of Paul, so one should look elsewhere for the NPP (see the works of NT Wright; Dunn and others on this issue). However, notwithstanding this, do buy this book!Alongside this volume, I do suggest Chris Vanlandingham's 2006 book published by Hendrickson, "Judgment and Justification in Early Judaism and the Apostle Paul."

This is such a great resource that will equip and guide you into exploring the mind of an investor. Whatever your goal is, wether it is to become a venture capitalist or an entrepreneur, I have yet to come across a simple blueprint that breaks it down in one easy to read book like #BreakIntoVC.As an accountant and entrepreneur, I can tell you that this book is excellently executed for anyone interested in evaluating ideas or businesses from an investor's perspective. From reading this book, I gained priceless insights into understanding markets plus killer strategies. If you are an entrepreneur or aspiring venture capitalist, do yourself a favor. Get equipped to thrive as you begin your journey!

While many of the reviews here rightly praise Bradley here for the remarkably lucid roadmap he provides for breaking into the notoriously opaque VC landspace, I think the books greatest asset lies not in answering the question of How, but more importantly, Why?Indeed, nearly every aspect of the How is covered in great detail, by elucidating the structural underpinnings of venture capital down to the nuts and bolts. A novice with zero knowledge of VC terminology can come out of this book with an impressively fluent command of the dynamics needed to navigate the spaces.More impressive, in my opinion, is his explication of the Why;After describing his brief stint in Investment Banking while attending an Ivy League University, the author shares his path that led him into a landscape that he genuinely feels passionate and excited about, a passion that exudes from the page. The sense of community, individual responsibility, and possibility that meet at the intersection of Venture Capital. After searching for a book to teach me the How, I coincidently found a book that taught me to ask a more important question, a question with infinitely more implications then the one I had sought, the question of Why.Well done.

This book is a good introductory text for anyone hopeful in better understanding the investor's perspective, with a tilt towards VC and growth oriented investing. I'm a two year professional, currently in a non-financial services finance role. I've managed my own investments in my personal savings and with analysts coming from backgrounds in PE. This guide follows a practical approach but is straightforward and simple enough for anyone coming from different backgrounds to start thinking the way investors think. To offer some criticism, I would say that it is very introductory. I didn't think that it covered enough of the VC sphere to be more than an introductory piece. I was looking to have a deeper understanding and will be looking for other texts to build on what I was able to pick up in this book. But for a 100 page book and a cheap sticker price, it's a good go-to for a short refresher on topics that are very relevant to approaching VC investing.

I read this book out of pure curiosity and I truly enjoyed it! I work in consulting and I'm always looking into potential exit options for the future. This book was the best introduction to VC I could ask for. In the introduction, Miles says he will "hold your hand" through each chapter and, fortunately, he makes good on that promise. Before reading the book, I was completely unfamiliar with the VC terms mentioned and the distinctions between various stages of investment (including the differences between angel investors and VC's). So, I appreciated that the author clearly defined each term before he went in-depth. And he does go very in-depth on each topic! It seems like he goes through every single detail you could possibly want to know but still, the book has a very easygoing tone that feels like a casual coffee chat.Highly recommend this book for anyone who's curious about what the hell VC is, how it works, and how to become a venture capital staffer. This will definitely spark your interest and motivate you!

This is the best book I have read on learning about venture capital. The information was very clear, direct, and gave me a much better understanding about VC. I enjoyed reading the author's personal stories relating to VC, personal networking, and thinking like an investor. Highly recommend adding this book to your collection.

I met Bradley during his stint at CoinDesk as research analyst. Our conversations always seemed to drift towards venture capital, his venture experiences and the book he was writing. Imagine my surprise after getting an advanced copy! #BreakIntoVC may be the definitive guide for those who are interested in pursuing a career in venture capital. Bradley clearly lays out ways to value early and late stage businesses as well as the most important metrics used to track technology companies. I have already recommended this book to several close friends in Silicon Valley. If you are interested in venture capital or thinking like an investor, you will find yourself immersed in Bradley's new book.

I read this book as someone who runs an accelerator program and helps support folks get their early stage businesses started. What I found particularly useful was the glossary of terms in the back of the book! As an entrepreneur, it is up to you to learn as much as possible. Bradley makes it easier by offering plenty of resources of people that you should be following and learning from. I think this book is beneficial to entrepreneurs who are not going after VC funding. It provides an overview of finances that every entrepreneur or business owner should feel confident in their ability to understand the terminology. This will serve you whether approaching the bank for a loan or a VC. Remember 97% of businesses are bootstrapped. There are other sources of credit out there. The best thing you can do for your business is KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. You don't need VC funding to have a successful business. This book will help prepare you for whatever route you decide is best. Also, I love how responsive and accessible Bradley is to responding to emails and helping folks out!
