My grandfather was mentioned a few times in this book. Not many books seem to be written about those who escaped the march. Amazing to see what they went through.

Malcolm Decker has written a very readable second book on WWII in the Philippines, this time dealing with the few hundred Americans who either evaded capture or escaped from the Death March following the April 9, 1942 surrender of the Bataan defenders. The heroes of this volume are Filipinos in general and the Fassoth family in particular. The author credits twin brothers Bill and Martin Fassoth and Bill's wife Catalina with saving at least 104 American military men who escaped the Japanese. The Fassoths, German-American immigrants from Hawaii, ran a successful sugarcane plantation on Luzon. After the surrender, they organized and ran a series of four camps hidden away in the mountains and sheltering American soldiers who escaped from the Japanese. During the year that these camps survived, Bill Fassoth estimated that between 200 and 300 Americans sheltered in them. Most of the men moved on after they recuperated, with many joining guerrilla groups. Others were scattered by a series of five raids the Japanese mounted on these camps. About 100, determined to wait out the war in comparative comfort, did not willingly leave. Many of these were killed, captured or surrendered as the Japanese ratcheted up the pressure. In October, 1943 Bill and Martin Fassoth themselves surrendered when the Japanese offered leniency to those surrendering and death to anyone not turning themselves in.The author sums up this period by writing that "By October 1943, the Japanese had captured and executed virtually all the major [American] guerrilla leaders on Luzon" (p. 154). Fewer than half of about 400 escaped Americans survived the war. Both Fassoth brothers were among those surviving, but the family was never reimbursed by the U.S. government for the considerable expenses incurred sheltering Americans. The early chapters of the book briefly describe the defense of Bataan and then follow various small groups of Americans as they fled the battlefield and eventually found their way to the Fassoth camps. The last three chapters deal with the reconstruction of the guerrilla groups shattered by Japanese raids, preparations for Gen. Douglas MacArthur's return, and the liberation of the Philippines.Arguably the Philippine campaigns were the most important of the Pacific theater, as the heroic defense against the Japanese invasion bought enough time for MacArthur to secure Australia, which in turn was the launching point for his drive to liberate the Philippines. And more than half the Japanese military deaths in World War II occurred in the Philippines (p. 197).J. Michael HoulahanHistorian, Philippine Scouts Heritage Society

If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life. And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works. But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world. And that's why I believe this is their best book yet. Here's a little summary of what I learned:1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone. As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic. And that's it.Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

It is worth the time and the money. The book isn't as earth-shattering as Freakonomics, but it's pretty good. The 4 stars are very well deserved and maybe a little conservative... 5 stars might be a fair rating for the Kindle edition. If you buy the Kindle edition, in addition to the book it comes with a few articles and a Q&A session with the authors. These additions to the Kindle edition do add value. I liked their thoughts and the advice they gave the British Prime Minister on health care. The most interesting, however, was Dubner's interview:"... I think we should treat health and life and death more like a regular good....we need to - it's unfortunate, but we need to - make these horrible choices, where we decide, are going to send our kids to college or are we going to keep great-grandma alive for two more weeks, and the cost might be about the same for those two things. Right now we shy away from those decisions, and we pretend like life has infinite value and we can't make these choices."

Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for thinking. Thinking is generally done on only one way, but Think Like a Freak offers its readers a new way to think about everyday situation. The truth is that we can’t really predict the future, there IS a medical reason for that condition- not just stress, causality is not caused by correlation, saying “I don’t know” is OK, giving up is sometimes the answer, and thinking like a kid is more beneficial than you think. The authors of Think Like a Freak try to present problems in a way that spin them on their head and force the reader to change their thinking and perspective. Saying “I don’t know” is HARD for most people. It admits defeat in some sort of way and most people don’t want to be wrong or defeated, naturally. But, the authors offer a new way of thinking. Saying “I don’t know” is not defeat, it is the beginning, the jumping off point for new discovery. It also, as the authors say, offers “the power of a good, randomized experiment.” Not knowing is not defeat! As a teacher, the chapter called “What’s Your Problem?” spoke the most to me. It speaks a great deal toward the education problems in the US. Teachers are under enormous strain from almost every angle possible, and Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for tackling some of those problems. This book is changing my view of what it calls “noisy problems” and making me realize that there are new ways to experiment with learning. Students who come with baggage can be helped if we look at the problem a little differently. We all have barriers that we face out there, it is up to all of us change our perspective.

Q: What is this? A: This is a Reader's Digest version of much bigger books about Epistemology.Q: Who is it for? A: It is not for persons who have spent years reading about Epistemology (like the current writer) but for people who need something that is very light in tone and deliberately made to be very interesting.Q: What are some of the sources that expand on the nature of some of the topics covered in this book? A: 1. Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers is the New Way To Be Smart. Talks about only finding relationships between variables and not getting too caught up in cause and effects; 2. Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. Talks about making failures survivable and how learning what *doesn't* work is just as important as learning what does work; 3. Various books by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. This book talks about the limits of what *can* actually be known.Q: Do I recommend this book? A: Yes. Even for the full price (Kindle). And even for people who know most of all this information, it's good seeing the authors update said information with new and interesting examples and good prose.

It's always a hit-and-miss proposition when it comes to a good travel guide for the Caribbean and so it is with this book as well. It's not so much that it's "bad" it just isn't that good either. SInce I did purchase it for Aruba specifically it didn't bother me about the lack of detail for the other islands (I did a review of another publication for Bonaire a couple of years ago).I guess what I find lacking in many of the Frommer/Fodor books is the bias towards what the particular author liked as opposed to just providing info. For example: we did do the DePalm Island thing and since I had booked it prior to find a little blurb in this book on how she didn't find it all that big a deal, our group enjoyed it. That was a surprise to me because I felt like I had been taken after booking the non-refundable excursion and yet the 6 of us (ages 19 - 50) all found it to be just fine - expensive - but enjoyable nevertheless. So while I understand that what one person found stupid or not worthwhile doesn't necessarily translate into what you may enjoy, these books are somewhat of a necessary evil but are by no stretch the end-all, be-all of how you plan your vacation. One thing I will call out is the restaurant reviews were pretty accurate - so kudos for that!Lastly - as for the island itself...far too busy for this Caribbean traveler. Traffic in and around Oranjestad is THE WORST I have ever encountered. I will not make a return trip based on that nightmare. In ten years and 11 stays in and around the Caribbean, Aruba wins the award for worst traffic and least viable alternative for avoiding it by way of providing decent secondary roads around the city. I really feel that if you select the northern or southern end of the island, you're kinda stuck in the geographical area unless you want to spend 45 - 60 minutes negotiating Oranjestad.Your mileage may vary...good traveling!

Like most Frommer's travel guides, this is a generally informative, pocket-size guide with accurate data for general trip planning to Aruba. Great if that is your destination. However, the title is very misleading as most of the book is dedicated to Aruba, with only one chapter each devoted to the other two ABC islands. The minimal coverage of Bonaire and Curacao mainly point out differences from Aruba, but offer few details regarding the other island ammenities.Since I purchased the book in anticipation of a scuba trip to Bonaire, I found it of little use. There are other much better guides for Bonaire.

There was nothing in this book that was not available on travel websites for free. I mainly got it because i could not find much information on Curacao, and this book did not provide much value in that area. Same with Aruba, the other guidebooks i got were all better than this one. Skip it.

I bought this book before going to Aruba. Overall it was pretty good and useful. However most, if not all, the info can be found online. This book is just a way to organize the information a little better. The problem with a book is that even the most current book isn't always the most current information. So for general information about Aruba it's great. However for details about restaurants, shopping, excursions, etc online might be your best bet. If you'd like a supplement to some other research you've done about Aruba this book fits the bill.

If you are planning on going to Aruba, you will get quite a bit of info. However, if you are traveling to Curacao, there isn't much information there and there really could be. There is a lot to do in Curacao and wonderful places to eat. I realize this book is old, but much more info should be provided about Curacao. Thought it was just "ok."

Nice book to make planning your Aruba trip so much easier.

Planning a trip to Aruba? This will help you spark some ideas on hotels, side-trips and excursions, tours, food, and shopping. Once I return from my Holiday trip, I will be able to update this review with more thourough detail.

The next best thing to being there. Half of a vacation is the planning and preparation, and this book was like having a resident answer all our questions. Very thorough, very current, and very relevant. Have fun in Aruba and buy this book before you go. My only negative is it didn't have a large review of the resort I stayed at (Riu Palace). I was able to gather that info elsewhere. Have a blast in Aruba - buy this book.

Cutting-edge social sensor technologies open up a world of new possibilities, allowing you to identify hidden social patterns within your organization—and make subtle, unobtrusive adjustments that lead to large, measurable improvements. People Analytics will help you discover how your people really work, collaborate, and innovate, so you can help them do it more successfully. MIT Media Lab innovator Ben Waber shows how new sensors and “big data” analytics can help you gain an unprecedented understanding of how your people work and actionable insights for building a more effective, productive, and positive organization. Through cutting-edge examples, Waber demonstrates how you can use these technologies to optimize everything from call center performance to sick-day policies. Most remarkable of all, you’ll learn how to accurately measure (and effectively address) “subjective” success factors…from culture to creativity. • Measure the informal interactions that are crucial to long-term success • Recognize emerging problems before they derail teams, projects, or mergers • Systematically improve the effectiveness of in-person and electronic communication • Discover who your “internal experts” really are • Identify surprising hidden sources of creativity and innovation • Get fine-grained data for better nuts-and-bolts HR decision-making • Enhance employee performance—and reduce employee stress at the same time

Collaboration is a 21st century buzz word. Ben Waber uses science to prove how collaboration adds significantly to a company’s bottom line.If I told you that “changing how people spent 15 minutes of their day” could yield $15 million in profit, would you believe me?You should because Ben Waber et al. proved it in the their experiments namely the water cooler effect during his research at MIT. He wrote his findings as a fantastic read called People Analytics: How social sensing technology will transform business and what it tells us about the future of work.Waber collected data from modified employee worn id badges and analyzed the effects of human interactions. While email data can easily be mined to produce a description of written office communication, Waber and his team at MIT wanted to capture the ‘hidden’ communication in office settings. The value of the coffee breakWaber et al. studied the effects of synchronized coffee breaks for call center employees at Bank of America. The results showed conclusively that employees were more cohesive and less stressed as a result of taking their ‘coffee’ breaks with colleagues. The experiment did not require employees to communicate, they did that naturally. The orchestrated communication made employees feel more cohesive. These factors increased productivity and significantly decreased employee turnover. All significantly increasing BoA’s bottom line.Co-location and outsourcing software developmentNext, Waber investigated remote teams working together. Obviously, teams working together, at the same location, is ideal. But, what about remote teams? How can we increase their productivity? For instance, Is it worth it to fly everyone in and meet face to face before starting a project? Does that expense increase the remote team’s productivity. Waber proved an emphatic yes. When teams met face-to-face before the project they understood each other better, trusted each other better, and were better at collaborating afterwards.Waber sums up the importance of collaborations as follows:“In additional to doing away with this individual view of productivity, we need to get rid of the notion of the lone genius. An easy way to think of our creativity, and our impact on our colleagues as a whole, is to think about how much work we can actually get done by ourselves. Imagine you discover a way to increase your performance by 10%. Assuming you work 40 hours a week, you can end up saving 4 hours of your time every week by using this new method you’ve discovered. If you keep it to yourself, over one year you will end up saving about 200 hours. But, what if you shared your discovery with 5 of your closest coworkers? Maybe it takes you a while to teach them this new method, say 20 hours. In that case, individually you would only save 180 hours, but collectively everyone would save 1,200 hours in that first year. On top of that, however, you’ve now created a community where sharing tips is expected… etc. (199-200)Of course, as Waber emphasizes, we must be very careful about privacy employee privacy issues.I recommend the book.

I had the privilege of hearing Ben talk in Boston prior to the publication of the book. He has a very plainspoken direct presentation of compelling information about the impact of human interactions which comes across in his talks as well as his writing. I actually, honestly, hate most business books as they tend to follow the format of- present the theory and then crush you to death with boredom retelling the theory with repetitive examples that offer little further consideration. Ben's book is not like that at all- it is builds in layers a compelling view of the complexity of human interactions in a variety of work settings from customer service to banking to healthcare. I loved it and eagerly await his next publication.

A great read... Ben and his firm's work in this domain is potentially ground breaking and certainly powerful... it shows a way to unlock a deeper understanding of human behavior, while avoiding the difficulties of question asking, memory lapses, perception, and opinion... it's been said (Drucker maybe???) that you can't manage what you can't measure." Beneath managing lives understanding. Suppose this helps us understand our OWN ways of communicating so we manage ourselves better... suppose it gives people a lens AND a meter into themselves... this is fertile ground...

Although I am still reading the book about People Analytics by Ben Waber, I find it very enlighting and well worth the time to read it. I would not only recommend the book but would certainly advise others to read it and to keep up on and understand social sensing and all the possibilities involved in it.

This book is interesting but I think that the introduction to the subject matter is too long and so the reader could get distracted from the main theme of the book.

With the use of sociometric badges, with sensors such as microphone, IR transceiver, accelerometer and Bluetooth radio, one can acquire sensed data which can be combined with other data such as email communications to glean insights into how people in a company interact or don't interact, and infer networks of interaction among people. This can bring insights into how cohesion affects people and their productivity. The book explains these ideas as well as elaborates on particular applications of this technique. Some interesting results include the justification that face-to-face meetings are important and the Internet collaboration tools might not be enough, and that cohesion has a big role to play in productivity, in creativity, in distributed software development where there are dependencies and in the success of mergers. How the future will be is an interesting question, whether such sensors will be commonplace with wearable technologies. The book could have perhaps been a little more technical or provide more details about the data collected and how the analytics was done but the focus is understandably on business impact.

Everybody seems to have an opinion on how to improve workplace productivity, but until now those opinions could only be subjective. Ben Waber shows how the technology of People Analytics has now made objective measurements possible. He starts from the impressive productivity improvements occurring now, by making simple workplace changes when backed up by hard data. This is fascinating by itself, yet he then advances the logical next steps, proposing how larger productivity increases are possible, even probable, in the coming years. All it takes is real data. It's a must read if you're responsible for managing your company into an increasingly competitive future. If you're not (as is my case), it's still a great story of the unexpected advances of technology.

many inspiring examples, but unfortunately a lot of ballast

The Carrying: Poems, by Ada Limón

Review

Praise for The Carrying “Limón has a novelistic knack for scene, and the narrative lyrics in this remarkable collection, her fifth, could stand as compressed stories about anxiety and the body.”―New York Times “Exquisite . . . Limón is always a careful witness, accurately recording the moment, rather than trying to transcend it. Evocative dreams and pivotal memories help make this collection a powerful example of how to carry the things that define us without being broken by them.”―Washington Post “[In The Carrying] the National Book Award-nominated poet pens paeans to the world's limitless capacity to astonish.”―O, The Oprah Magazine “Ada Limón is a poet of ecstatic revelation. Her poetry feels fast, full of detail, often playful, and driven by a conversational voice. This book represents a powerful deepening of the poet’s perspective . . . It’s a book of deep wisdom and urgent vulnerability, driven by language that feels not only beautiful but permanent and powerfully wrought, like a mountain. It leads you to the beautiful bright mountaintop of language, then guides you gently down into the rocky valleys of a conscious human heart.”―Tracy K. Smith, Guardian “Masterful . . . a piercing look into the nature of pain and impermanence. . . . It is a paean to nature itself, to the peace in knowing it's both part of us and greater than us―especially when everything else in the world can seem like it's falling apart.”―BuzzFeed “With each poem in her new collection, The Carrying, Limón counterbalances her most paralyzing fears with her ability to find small twinges of hope. . . . Each poem is a widening lens of the world, an unburdening of the things we carry deep within ourselves.”―Paris Review "Merciful and beautiful . . . [Limón] never hides behind words but reveals herself through them―even when the risk is overexposure . . . This is as-the-crow-flies poetry―it goes straight to the heart."―Guardian “The Carrying is about the contradictory joys and burdens we all carry. . . . The societal connection between womanhood, motherhood and power is at the core of her work. . . . For Limón, carrying both the joys and sorrows of a child-free life is a testament to the human ability to exist with many things piled on our shoulders at once.”―PBS NewsHour “Tender, illuminating. . . . The anxiety of all of life’s realities permeates Limón’s collection, which makes the work feel piercingly of the moment.”―San Francisco Chronicle “Ada Limón’s pitch-perfect fifth collection, The Carrying, is full of poems to savor and share. . . . She writes with remarkable directness about painful experiences normally packaged in euphemism and, in doing so, invites the readers to enter a world where abundant joy exists alongside and simultaneous to loss.”―Minneapolis Star Tribune “[Ada Limón’s] new collection is her best yet, a much needed shot of if not hope, then perseverance amidst much uncertainty.”―NPR “The Carrying is one of [Ada Limón’s] best. Even in poems about racism, misogyny, violence, and the darkness that often accompanies life, Limón’s resiliency shines through.”―Bitch “For a book metered by grief, there’s a lot of love here―that shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering Limón’s stylistic control and skill. . . . Limón is very good at pacing her poems to leave us satisfied but also curious. . . . One of the best books of the year.”―The Millions “Lyrical, tender, and knowing . . . Ada Limón’s poetry connects the personal and the universal.”―Garden & Gun “With the knowing directness of a letter, Limón’s poems speak to the marrow of our everyday condition. . . . The Carrying is a vital collection for a noisy, brutal time. The power of Limón’s unflinching examination of grief and loss is only surpassed by her love of beauty and compassion.”―BOMB Magazine “[Limón's] poems come closer than any poems have to Annie Dillard’s essays. . . . She’s that rarest of beasts, a poet who can take you by surprise.”―New Criterion “Deeply intimate . . . A poetry collection to help you make sense of the world right now. . . . It’s a spinning world that, increasingly, is turning to poetry like Limón’s to make sense of ― or, at least, to assuage the grief of ― it all.”―Bustle “What drives her poems―what makes her new collection, The Carrying, so moving and masterful―is her dexterity with voice and diction and her giftedness with metaphor. It is her deep wellspring of surprising and evocative images and her syntactic superpowers. Most of all, it’s her intellect and intelligence. The poems are keen reflections of a mind constantly at work, seeing and wondering and moving toward meaning but not always the meaning to which the poem and its reader thought they were headed.”―Poets & Writers “Ada Limon’s new poems in The Carrying are like a winter garden―somber, full of grief and patience, suddenly visible lines from here to there. To watch a poet in full possession of her power tending the earth with this kind of care feels like an inspiration that comes with a chastened edge: time, they remind, is all we have.”―Literary Hub “All of Limón’s books have found a home on my bookshelf, each volume a heartfelt reckoning of what it is be alive. In her collections, I find a grace that demonstrates her versatility and wisdom as well as a ‘surrendering.’ She explains that the central question of her work is, ‘How do we live in the world?’ Yet she’s a poet as comfortable with questions as with answers.”―Guernica “[Ada Limón] might be the mom of Latinx poetry, and I mean that in the best way possible. . . . Límon is talented in a way that’s both intimidating and inspiring, and is definitely a strong pillar of contemporary poetry.”―Book Riot “Ada Limón’s The Carrying delves into the deeply personal as the speaker uncovers what might be her infertility. . . . The book points us to look at all the things we ask of our bodies, all the things we ask it to carry through this remarkable and unstable world.”―Chicago Review of Books “Wisely observant . . . Limón’s poems personify the twinned-narrative of despair and tenacity that has become part of America’s current political and social reality. Indeed, The Carrying is a spark of courage in our dark and troubled times.”―PANK “Limón’s work is a reminder that you can write poetry about big ideas.”―America Magazine “Exquisite poems about love, fertility, desire, this natural world we move through, the political climate, so much more.”―Roxane Gay, Goodreads “Superb. . . . Although the subject matter is often mournful, the endurance of nature also comes to light. Even though an individual may perish, there is consistency in the life cycles of bumblebees, dandelions, and race horses―all of which are examined with gorgeous language and imagery that makes Limón’s collection hard to put down, even in the moments that cause a deep, sorrowful ache.”―Chicago Review of Books “This is the kind of poetry that strikes that rare balance: deftly crafted and profound but also completely accessible. The collection is about creation, death and everything in between, with so much attention to the thrumming world that just by reading it you become more aware, more in tune with the life around you.”―BookPage “Ada Limón is one of the country's finest poets. . . . Honest, lyrical observations on love, loneliness, life, death and all the mysteries in between. . . . She performs a near-miraculous feat in balancing razor-sharp imagery with deep ambivalence. . . . The Carrying beautifully conveys the power of poetry in an age that needs it most.”―Shelf Awareness “Ada Limón teaches me that language can still surprise me. She shows me that the juxtaposition of words not previously joined can catch me off-guard, make me feel that shimmer of resonance, of curiosity.”―Signature “Gorgeous, thought-provoking . . . This fearless collection shows a poet that can appreciate life's surprises.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A stunning collection. . . . Limón writes movingly about finding the spectacular in the everyday. . . . A reverent, extraordinary take on the world. Don’t miss this life-affirming collection.”―Library Journal (starred review) “A master of examining themes from unexpected angles, Limón rotates her topics in kaleidoscopic turns. . . . Page after page, this proves to be a startling and tender, magnificent collection.”―Booklist "Extraordinary . . . you realize that you witnessed something mesmerizing."―Foreword Reviews “In her dazzling, precise, transformative collection, The Carrying, Ada Limón offers us meditations on mortality, womanhood, the body, and that which grows in the earth, all the while slyly positing: How we should treat each other in this precarious life? Like humans, is her answer. Like humans.”―Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins “In her powerful new collection, Ada Limón asks: ‘What if, instead of carrying // a child, I am supposed to carry grief?’ And later: ‘isn’t there still something singing?’ To which I say: yes. In these poems, joy and longing and grief sing with a music that―regardless of what I am burdened or blessed to carry―makes me want to live passionately and fully in the difficult world. The Carrying is a gift."―Natasha Trethewey “It is no wonder that Ada Limón’s wonderful new book, The Carrying, is full of goldfinches and strawberries and dandelions and hostas and, as she writes, ‘all good things that come from the ground.’ It’s also no wonder that it’s full of the life that death makes. And the living that dying is. For this book is a garden. And like a garden, it will nourish you. It will feed you.”―Ross Gay Praise for Bright Dead Things A Finalist for the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award A Best Poetry Book of 2015: New York Times and Buzzfeed “Effortlessly lyrical.”―New York Times “Bright Dead Things buoyed me in this dismal year. I’m thankful for this collection, for its wisdom and generosity, for its insistence on holding tight to beauty even as we face disintegration and destruction.”―Celeste Ng “These poems are, as my students might say, hella intimate. They are meticulously honed and gorgeously crafted. They marry the lyric poem’s interior emotional intensity with its exterior mode of social conveyance and aesthetic beauty. . . . The best compliment one can give a book of poems is that the book loves the reader. Bright Dead Things doesn’t just love poetry; it loves the reader. My hunch is, Reader, you’ll love it too.”―Huffington Post “Bright Dead Things breeds a particular mixture of wildness. The mixture is by turns melodious and tight. Limón’s poems are like fires: charring the page, but leaving a smoke that remains past the close of the book.”―The Millions “Limón’s work is destined to find a place with readers on the strength of her voice alone. Her intensity here is paradoxically set against the often slow burn of life in Kentucky, and the results will please readers.”―Flavorwire “Poet and Critic Stephen Burt says, ‘Prose sense is to poetry as tonality is to music.’ And I see that sense of prose cushioned in each poem included in this leguminous compilation. The works wear complexity on their sleeves with reassuring accessibility on their faces; to say it more succinctly, there’s a tough grilling of the soul and champagnes served to the measure of each one’s taste.”―The Rumpus “In Bright Dead Things, there’s a fierce jazz and sass (‘this life is a fist / of fast wishes caught by nothing, / but the fishhook of tomorrow’s tug’) and there’s sadness―a grappling with death and loss that forces the imagination to a deep response. The radio in her new, rural home warns ‘stay safe and seek shelter’ and yet the heart seeks love, risk, and strangeness―and finds it everywhere.”―Gregory Orr “Limón doesn’t write as if she needs us. She writes as if she wants us. Her words reveal, coax, pull, see us. In Bright Dead Things we read desire, ache, what human beings rarely have the heart or audacity to speak of alone―without the help of a poet with the most generous of eyes.”―Nikky Finney “Limón does far more than merely reflect the world: she continually transforms it, thereby revealing herself as an everyday symbolist and high level duende enabler. At the end of one poem she writes, ‘What the heart wants? The heart wants / her horses back,’ and suddenly even this most urban reader feels wild and free.”―Matthew Zapruder “Both soft and tender, enormous and resounding, her poetic gestures entrance and transfix.”―Richard Blanco “In her newest volume of poems, Limón delves into the divided self―self separated by geography, by loss, by change, by circumstance. . . . Generous of heart, intricate and accessible, the poems in this book are wondrous and deeply moving.”―Library Journal (starred review) “A poet whose verse exudes warmth and compassion, Limón is at the height of her creative powers, and Bright Dead Things is her most gorgeous book of poems.”―Los Angeles Review of Books “Richly written and felt.”―Publishers Weekly

I heard Ada Limon read "Wonder Woman" on the radio, and was so moved by it, that I had to pick up the book. The collection is, to borrow a metaphor from a previous reviewer, a thunderstorm. It is slow to start - the first 18 poems didn't really grab me or really capture my imagination. But like a storm, the pressure builds until there is a tremendous release and torrent. So, too, here, as the remaining two-thirds of the collection really hit me where I live. Among my favorites are her "The Contract Says: We'd Like the Conversation to be Bi-lingual" in which Limon writes,"When you come, bring your brown-ness so we can be sure to pleasethe funders. Will you check thisbox; we're applying for a grant.Do you have any poems that speakto troubled teens? Bilingual is best. ..."Several of her poems seem to be of a more personal nature, which I struggled connecting with. Those that touched on issues of politics, race, gender and broader descriptions of relationships and life resonated more with me - like "Wonder Woman" and "Instructions on Not Giving Up":"More than the fuchsia funnels breaking outof the crabapple tree, more than the neighbor'salmost obscene display of cherry limbs shovingtheir cotton-candy colored blossoms to the slatesky of spring rains, its the greening of the treesthat really gets to me ..."I am glad that I pushed through the first section of the collection - the images, the perspectives, the emotions that Limon stirred in me through her poems were why I read poetry in the first place: they capture moments in time and open a door through which I can connect with the poet. A beautiful anthology.

Ada Limon’s poems are like a daydream. Consider your most peaceful moments—the contemplative, content ones where you get to observe a moment in your life as if it were in a museum. Consider thinking and not thinking, transcending thought, absorbing and experiencing, contributing and receiving. In The Carrying, Limon writes about her life with impressionistic grace, conjuring all the soaring triumph of a quiet moment during golden hour. She does this even when writing about what’s difficult: grappling with her struggles to have a child, struggling with self-image, considering what it means to love and be loved. Her poems are fiercely personal, and because of that they are universal in their beauty. Like all good poets, Ada Limon offers no answers through her work, but offers her company while we play with questions. The result is a comforting and deeply human collection that embodies the strength and curiosity of the nature she so frequently invokes. If you don’t know Ada Limon, I am envious of you. The only thing more perfect than experiencing her is discovering her.

Dominant themes: living with severe (often debilitating) medical issues, mortality, nature, parenting, infertility, self-worth, love. Those are what spoke to me – you may pull others. As with all collections of poetry some spoke to me more than others. I particularly enjoyed Trying, and those that similarly spoke to finding purpose in the face of mortality. The overall mood of the poems seemed depressing and dark, there was always a pall over the narrator; the narrator seemed to carry the weight of the world at all times. The author’s language was less figurative and more literal.

This is not a book of poems, this is a thunderstorm: electric, beautiful, alive. Sometimes painful and heartbreaking but always full of light.

Nothing can reach the pinnacle of Bright Dead Things but the poems here are head and shoulders above most contemporaries.

Without a doubt the best collection of poems to come along in years! Nevermind poetry, this is one of the best books (of all types) in 2018!

There is no one that would not benefit from reading Ada Limon. She is a brilliant poet!

Ada Limons' best book so far Should be up for the National Book Award for Poetry and win!!!

I got this book to help with the inflammation in my joints. What I especially love about this book is that you adjust the instructions to fit your needs. After a few days of tweaking, I can feel a difference. This means less pain for me, and no need for NSAIDS. Finally! Thank you for writing this book!

This is a management tool for finding your best diet and not a diet prescription. The self-test in Chapter 6 guides you through a process of discovering whether you are a slow oxidizer, fast oxidizer, or mixed oxidizer. Slow oxidizers require low-protein, low-fat, and high carbohydrates. Fast oxidizers require high protein, high-fat, and low carbohydrates. Mixed oxidizers require relatively equal amounts of protein, fats, and carbohydrates. The author converts a jigsaw puzzle of specialized information into a paradigm for managing food choices. Rediscover the wisdom of ancestral diets with the Metabolic Typing Diet.

I have ben on this diet since Dec 2017. I started on it because I have an autoimmune disease and was getting nowhere with traditional treatments. After the first few days my cravings went away and I noticed a difference oin how I felt within a week or so. I work with a Metabolic Typing Advisor but bought this book because I have told so many people about the benefits I have seen. I have lost 60 lbs, 30 of that in ab out a month - month and a half. It has come off slow and steady since then. I eat more than I ever have, feel better than I have in years and the weight loss has been an added bonus. Giving your body the nutrients it needs, based on your type, is the key.

I struggle with my weight and have my whole life. I found out about this "diet" and decided to order the book to read up on it. I have noticed that it really works - and HOW it works makes perfect sense to me.I've been told by nutritionists that if your body is craving something, it's because you're missing some vitamin or mineral present in that food. The same nutritionists acknowledge that every person's body has different needs.So.. I took the test and adjusted my eating habits to match the type specified (I'm a "protein" type.) As long as I follow the recommendations for that, I am not constantly hungry and tired. Then of course, logically, since I'm not constantly hungry and feel full faster, I can control my portions more easily, reducing the calories in.I tend to ignore the last part of the book because it appears to be more of the controversial theories in medicine (thus the 4-star rating), but for the part specifically dealing with the "diet"? It works. I recommend it to anyone interested in a lifestyle change that's not all about what you can't have, but is all about adjusting your portions and eating order to feel fuller faster & longer.

UPDATE: 12/2012I've done some more research, and it seems the results are lacking because they had to save some of the information for their customized testing through the Healthexcel organization. Or, to put it more fairly, because the detailed results require a very detailed test, which is available through the Healthexcel/Metabolic Typing website. After reading more, the "Advanced" Test available through the website is more what I was expecting out of this book, which only has a "Basic" version of the test. The advanced test produces a much longer food list and a better introductory meal plan. The price is reasonable, as well; $40 if you do the online version; another option is to test through a certified counselor. Thus: Read this book if you are interested in exploring the ideas behind Metabolic Typing, as well as a push in the right direction. If you want a detailed meal plan, use the Advanced Test through their website.I am updating my rating to 3 stars now that I know "meatier" results are available. Although I was tempted to dock stars as a protest of having to make ANOTHER purchase after the book to obtain the full results, I suppose it's only a matter of philosophy as to which approach is better. Probably having this book available for $10, where more people might actually read it, is better than charging $50 for the book and an extended test that's more difficult to interpret and customize. Further, the book was not FORMATTED as a sales pitch, and does give a fair amount about tweaking the diet through trial and error. Thus, if you like the idea behind their Metabolic Typing and want to really maximize your benefit, just know that even if you purchase this book, you must be prepared to spend another $40.Will report back after taking the Advanced Test and fully implementing the recommendations for a time.-----------So, I used The Zone for several years and then Metabolism Miracle for about a year now. I got this book because I feel like my optimum must lie somewhere in between, and because the reviews of Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health confirmed something I noticed on Metabolism Miracle - I got a lot better results when avoiding all bread products. The survey was fascinating, but there were about 10 of the 64 (?) questions that I couldn't answer.I tested out a protein-type, which was not news for me.But the book gave me nothing new to work with. I'm struggling and frustrated at attempting to implement its suggestions, because it does not give solid guidelines. It recommends a 40% protein, 30% carb, 30% fat diet for protein type, compared to Zone's 40% carb, 30% protein, 30% fat. It also says I cannot eat a meal without protein, and that the best proteins are organ meats. Like I can eat organ meat at every meal.It gives a very short food list, and a brief excerpt of a menu plan that wasn't really 40/30/30.I felt this book really had nothing about customizing the diet. Beyond the 40/30/30, it said you must determine your exact carb level yourself. Start with no starches for a week. You should feel good. Then work your way up in carb consumption until you feel bad again. That's about the end of it.Well, that's what I was planning to do before I found this book.My plan going forward is to modify the Zone (P/F/C at every meal as 21 g/7 g/ 27 g, maybe flip the 27 and 21) OR modify Metabolism Miracle (meat at every meal, find the sweet spot in phase two between 11-20 g of carbs per 5 hour period).I've gotta go reread the reviews now to see why I was convinced to waste my money on this book. I feel like I must be missing something.

After going through the questions, I found out that I am a mixed type. Adding more protein to my meals has really worked wonders. I no longer have the cravings (salty crackers) and I am full and satisfied after the meals. This diet has also help relieve the problem with gas.In most cases, I don't even need any extra snacks during the day. I continue to experiment with a variety of foods and this has helped to determine which foods work best for me.

I read this book through several times and referred to it often. Take the quiz inside the book to determine what type of diet you should choose based upon your metabolic type. I thought this book made a lot of sense - I believe in the body's ability to work miracles when treated properly. I think you would enjoy using this book, if only to find out which metabolic type you are. I recommend this book - in fact this is the second time I am purchasing it as my first copy was loaned out and never returned. Perhaps that says it all.
