About the Author

Jimmy Akin was born in Texas and raised in Arkansas. He grew up nominally Protestant but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant pastor or seminary professor, he began an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture, the more he found it to support the Catholic faith. Eventually, he was compelled in conscience to enter the Catholic Church, which he did in 1992. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," appeared in "Surprised By Truth." Akin is director of apologetics at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to "This Rock" magazine, a weekly guest on the global radio program "Catholic Answers Live," and the author of several books, including "Mass Confusion: The Do's and Don'ts of Catholic Worship."

This book by Jimmy Akin contains an incredible amount of valuable information on the Catholic Faith. It contains many explanations that are probably the best expositions available today. Nevertheless, it contains a very large flaw that overshadows the whole book.First, the good.In Chapter 1, Jimmy goes over the very important Bible truth that Salvation is a Past, Present, and Future event. He does so plowing through the epistles of St.Paul.In Chapter 2, Jimmy Akin discuss the all important aspect of Eternal Salvation and Eternal Atonement, and Temporal Salvation and Temporal Atonement. A topic rarely understood by Catholics or Protestants. This makes sense of how we atone for our temporal sins, and how there can still be temporal punishment once eternal punishment is remitted. The difference between forgiveness and fellowship, in protestant terms. Chapter 3 continues in the same vein.Chapter 4 deals with the biblical need for and old testament roots of the practice of penance. Chapter 5 deals witht he biblical basis for indulgences.Chapter 8, Faith Works and Boasting, is by far the best chapter and worth the price of the book by itself. It is an in depth analysis of Catholic views on Paul. It shows the Catholic distinction between Eternal Law, Natural Law, Old Law, and the New Law. It shows how Paul was combating Jewish exclusivism and clinging to the old covenant, not a "works" salvation view. It provides a very cogent look into the mind of Paul. Chapter 9 continues in the same vein, explaining the Catholic view on Justification. Not all is good however. Chapter 6, in which Jimmy analyzes the 5 points of Calvinism is very problematic. First off, nowhere in this chapter does he mention the dogma's of the Catholic faith that Christ gives sufficient grace for all and desires all to be saved. And he neglects the Catholic dogma's that God Predestines nobody to hell and died for all men. This gives the very very false appearance that Catholicism is close to Calvinism. Second, his intention behind the Chapter it to see "how close" to Calvinism Catholics can be without stepping into heresy. Why would you ask such a question? It's the same as asking how close we can come to sin without sinning. We should flee heresy.Furthermore, nowhere does he explain the different views of Man's freedom that exist between Catholics and Calvinists. His analysis of Total Depravity is very wrong. 1. The Catholic Church absolutely does not support Total Depravity. 2. His representation of how Calvinists believe is simply untrue. Calvinists believe man is totally evil and without any good at all, that is not the Catholic Teaching. On Unconditional Election, It is correct to say that a Catholic could believe in a form of unconditional election, but he totally neglects all the things a Catholic would have to believe with it(Such as Christ's desire for the salvation of all) that make is so different from Calvinism. In addition, even so, it still is in heavy tension with other Catholic Dogma's.On Limited Atonement, he is the most horrendous. Limited Atonement is a heresy according to the Catholic Church, yet he twists and rewords Catholic teaching to the point where Catholic Doctrine sounds like limited atonement. This is especially absurd and harmful. He continues on in like manner about the last two points of Calvinism. So, although this book contains some of the best teaching available on Paul, and Salvation as a whole, it's section on Calvinism is extremely misleading and often very false.

How much different are Catholic and Protestant views on the doctrines concerning salvation? As Mr. Akin clearly points out well, it really depends on how we define the terms. Perhaps the greatest roadblock between the two has been the misunderstandings about the meanings that each side places in the words they speak with regard to these doctrines. Mr. Akin describes where we are alike, no easy task since many Protestants seem to differ with one another as much as they do with Catholics, and where we are not alike. The first and overarching distinction is the distinction between temporal and eternal salvation and how that understanding can affect what we believe is taught in particular scriptures. Without that understanding that distinction, we are left to assumptions leading to all sorts of misunderstandings about other salvation-related topics.Mr. Akin then gently guides us into the difficult subject of indulgences and shows us the scriptural and logical basis for indulgences. Contrary to popular belief, the reformers were not opposed to indulgences - they were opposed to the abuse associated with indulgences at the time. A proper understanding of indulgences (on the part of both Catholic and Protestant believers) will go a long way to heal that misunderstanding. One chapter I found most helpful was his description of the Calvinist acronym, TULIP. Many Protestants and Catholics alike have misunderstood or misrepresented these "doctrines of grace" as they are often called by Calvinists. Mr. Akin seems to have a very clear and concise understanding of these doctrines. And, it is refreshing that he did not choose to throw it out in entirety but instead chose to compare it with the rich study of Thomas Aquinas' works touching on these doctrines. In the end, he does not offer a replacement for TULIP but instead only a refined form of "Thomist" TULIP. All of this is done in a gracious manner without attempts to belittle or humiliate Calvinists. If you are a Calvinist trying to decipher what the Catholic church really believes on these doctrines, you will want this book for this chapter alone. Many Catholics will find this chapter helpful as well. As Mr. Akin assets in the beginning of the chapter that since scripture uses the word predestination, all Christians must have a doctrine of what predestination is. As a former Calvinist, I found this chapter to be the best and most concise I have seen on this topic and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Following the brief foray into Calvinist Protestantism, Mr. Akin takes us back to the more general topics of faith, good works, and boasting. This is, perhaps, the most difficult topic for most Protestants and Catholics to understand one another. Nowhere do they seem to suffer the symptoms of dueling-definitions worse than on these topics. Mr. Akin does a good job of making the Catholic views quite understandable and clear to the point where one wonders how any Protestant could argue with the Catholic once their definitions are understood. In one brief chapter Mr. Akin dispels one of the most difficult stumbling blocks caused by the reformation. I do not think I have read any description quite so concise and clear on the association between faith, good works, and boasting. Finally, Mr. Akin draws to a close with an overview of the recent Lutheran-Catholic statement on justification. As is so often the case, outsiders such as the media, have misunderstood or misrepresented what the document contains. Worse, they have used those misunderstandings to make blanket statements about what the document accomplishes with reference to the reformation. Lutherans and Catholics are still at an impasse on many issues related to this topic - Mr. Akin clears up some of that confusion by indicating exactly where Lutherans and Catholics can agree. It may be surprising how much can be agreed upon. For the concise and clear explanations concerning salvation doctrines, this book is a must have for anyone wanting to know more on this watershed topic of Catholic/Protestant contention. So much has been written from both sides with misunderstandings and misrepresentations of both sides. It is clearly time for all of us to seek out books such as this before we attempt to speak or write on this topic further. This is a wonderful start toward clarity in definitions allowing us to speak the same language at last.

Jimmy does a thorough job of explaining this common controversy for laymen to understand.

If you want a thorough exercise in the issue of salvation here it is! I've not read a better explanation and analysis of this very central to Christianity topic. Mr. Aiken challenges-forces-the reader to think. If you can refute his analysis, you thoroughly know your material. This kind of book is a great advanced text for small group study.

"The Salvation Controversy" by Mr. Akin is a pretty reader friendly walk through the main points of contention between Catholic and Protestant Christians. A one star review mentioned that it lacks an analysis of intrinsic versus imputed righteousness. I haven't finished the book yet but it hasn't talked about it. Mr. Akin did teach me things I didn't know about Catholic penance and indulgences, as well as exposing myths about them. This is a good book overall, its a good answer to common myths about Catholic teaching.

An excellent layman-language approach to an important topic. Concise, accurate, comprehensive and understandable. Highly recommended for anyone sincerely interested in understanding the differences and common ground among Catholics and Protestants on the topics of justification, salvation and faith. Well done, Jimmy Akins!

This is an interesting look at salvation from a biblical perspective. It presents salvation as a past, present, and future event as evidenced in Scripture. If you think you have declared your own salvation you might want to read this book and meditate on it.

This review is for the Audio CD version of the book. Although the author is a woman, a man was chosen to narrate the audiobook. This was a little surprising, however the narrator does a credible job with only a few spots where he gives a wrong emphasis and one time where he says the wrong word ("desire" instead of "disaster" - this may be a typo in the text but I haven't seen it yet). For me, this audiobook is effective at having a higher emotional impact than simply reading. There is a lot of emotion in this story and since most people speak only half as fast as they read, there is more time to dwell upon the content as you listen to it.The book itself is a companion to the TV documentary by the same name. The documentary is part of a series on air disasters that was originally owned by National Geographic and later bought by the Smithsonian Channel. The book author has followed the themes of the Southern Storm episode and expanded further through additional interviews and a visit to the crash site. As a survivor, I was interviewed for the original episode and acted as an unofficial technical adviser. (Amusingly, the shortened version of the episode gave my segment the scissors!)Ms. Chittum followed up with me and took pains to get a clearer understanding of what happened on Flight 242 by seeking out other survivors and technical experts. Although the format of a companion book doesn't allow for exhaustive detail on every aspect and the nature of the accident as a chain of events with critical gaps in information doesn't allow for anyone to claim the last word, she has done a nice job of providing a long overdue popular counterpart to the "technicalese" of the NTSB report. It is very unfortunate that one of the main "characters" of the 242 story, Sadie Burkhalter Hurst, passed away only a few months before its publication. I consider the book to be a fitting tribute to the memory of the role she played on April 4, 1977 and afterwards.Southern Storm: The Tragedy of Flight 242 (Air Disasters)

The piece of history known as Southern Airways Flight 242 is well told by author Samme Chittum. The writer takes the story through multiple facets of the crash, from weather to human error to aviation mechanics, and on to the individual lives of those affiliated to the crash of Southern 242, and on to the community of New Hope, GA, where a small group of people still provide healing and comfort for all involved. This well written book touches the heart and opens the eye to the difference caring people can make in, and after, a tragedy. A must-read, the book touches on the fragility of life and follows with strength of the human spirit, and a hope for overcoming and healing. It is more than just another aviation book, it is also an edifying book on the state of humanity as it was in 1977 and how a particular group of people still carry that banner today. The author is to be commended for her skill in weaving together all the events before, during, and after the crash of Southern Airways Flight 242 while maintaining the respect and dignity of survivors, victims, and their families. This book touches in different ways; give it a chance to touch you, too. Great job, Ms. Chittum.

This book is personal to me having bben in the vicinity of that fateful day.

True account of a disastrous plane crash with heroic crew and survivors.

The author's ability to write a detailed heart-filled as well as technical account of something that happened nearly 50 years is incredible. It is almost as if these are interviews in the weeks following this tragedy. Waiting to read more from Ms. Chittum.

Factual and accurate while providing a personal perspective to this tragedy.

It was a stormy day."Here we go. Hold 'em cowboy". These were words spoken by Southern Airways Captain William Mackenzie as he and First Officer Lyman Keele were about to enter turbulent airspace that would be instrumental in sealing their fate and all of the passengers aboard flight 242.I couldn't put this book down. It's a riveting account of catastrophic proportions that was both spellbinding and heartbreaking and ultimately led to a barrage of blame and unspeakable grief. When Flight 242 took off from Huntsville, Alabama, the crew knew they were in for some bad weather. They had no idea how debilitating conditions would become. The dangerous circumstances were exacerbated by a series of oversights including lack of communication, a radar that was "susceptible to attenuation" (reduction in signal strength), and the FAA controller on duty's failure to place the distressed flight 242 on emergency status. The latter arguably contributed to this passenger plane's doom. Many lives were lost as a result, but many lessons and changes in aviation ensued as well.A good portion of this book focuses on the victims, and takes us through the events that precipitated the tragedy that took place on April 4, 1977. Suddenly the aircraft was pelted and battered by baseball-sized hail, ravaging the turbine engines and reducing cabin occupants into startled silence. Meanwhile, drama was unfolding in the cockpit as the frantic pilots made futile attempts to restart the engines while deciding where to make an emergency landing. Passengers, including Annette Snells, an R&B vocalist on the threshold of stardom who had just wrapped up a successful hit-making recording session at Muscle Shoals Studio, had no idea that her life would be cut short in the conflagration that would consume a portion of a rural highway 30 miles outside of Atlanta. We get a glimpse of the last hours of victims’ lives, including the devastation of an entire family whose car was parked in the path of the beleaguered aircraft. The human toll is poignantly relayed as a swath of destruction lays bare the fatalistic nature of the heroic efforts to land a "dead-stick" aircraft in an impossible situation. The book does get somewhat graphic — many of the victims succumbed to burns — but it's not over the top, and focuses more on the human connections made during and after the worst plane crash in Georgia's history. The final third of the book delves into a year-long investigation of the plane crash that is replete with controversy, the blame game, outrage, and confusion. The main focus of the investigation was on the two engines that stalled out, rendering the aircraft powerless as it glided while losing altitude. Their only hope was an emergency landing at the nearest airport, but due to myriad circumstances that are somewhat shrouded in mystery, Flight 242 ended up attempting to land the massive jet on a small two lane highway.'Southern Storm' is a quick and easy read that doesn't require one to be familiar with aviation mechanics and jargon or other technical specifications. Rather, it focuses on the human condition, and how quickly things can unravel when a combination of bad weather and mechanical failure are the true flight path determinents.Highly recommended reading.~ Kort

I ordered this book & want to say it was very well written & sincere. With all that Tami went through leaving this religion she still stayed positive about the people still within the religious organization. I think it is very hard when a person starts to persue different beliefs & religions to find the right place for them. The hardest thing is many "man-made" religions say they are right & only they are the true way. That can be very hard for the new Christian until they have read the Bible for themselves. Many religions take scripture out of context & twist for their own benefit - to get members into their organization. Many are very convicing if a person does not know their Bible & also high-pressure. Many use "good works" as a way to show they are good people - the Lord said, good works will not get you into the kingdom of Heaven. That does not mean good works are bad but there is a perfect example of twisting scripture. My personal feeling is to belong to no "man-made religion" - but I do not need to go into my personal beliefs here. The main point of Tami's book is to give a person a clear basic insite where & what this religion is all about. What happened to her personally while in it & also when leaving & afterward. She hits on very good areas & proof or where they are wrong according to the Bible. I think this book is a wonderful expression from a very strong woman that went through a lot personally to do what she knew was right & to stop being controlled by an organization. She paid a very big price for sure & easily could have lashed out but she didn't. She explained everything in a straight forward manner & simple way for people to understand the brain-washing that goes on. Hopefully people would read this book before getting too involved in this religion & truly question their doctrine. Also open their eyes to realize they need to anaylis & question any/all doctrine of an organization before joining. People in general like to belong, be accepted & feel secure & these groups address this & hook people in just that way. After time goes on it becomes extremely hard to get out. I encourage any & all folks to read this book if they are considering joining this religious group or just gaining a basic understanding of what they are all about. Hopefully also J.W.'s that are questioning will read it also & realize just what they are being told & believing & start thinking for themselves.

Unless someone has personally lived within the social circles of the Watchtower organization, it is next to impossible to understand the unique challenges that arise when the conscience of the individual conflicts with the imposed conscience of the Watchtower leaders upon its members. For those on the "outside" of the Watchtower organization, it is only too easy and convenient to label Jehovah's Witnesses as a cult or any number of the other derogatory terms that serve to understand the dynamics behind Watchtower membership even in the face of patently evident contradictions--especially in our modern day of rationality and reason. There is something about Jehovah's Witnesses that continues to draw people in regardless of the controversies. For non-Witnesses who hold the view that Jehovah's Witnesses are a "cult" and Jehovah's Witnesses who hold the view that non-Witnesses are "worldly," "bad association," and part of "false" Christianity, the lines are too easily and arbitrarily drawn into an over-simplified "us against them" mentality, without ever taking the necessary steps to understand the root cause of the problem.Even so, in her new book, Tami does an excellent job at portraying the subtler, more positive aspects of life among Jehovah's Witnesses that, if practiced on a much wider scale (rather than primarily amongst themselves, with the leftovers going to non-members), would impress upon others just how charitable and caring and clean-living Jehovah's Witnesses are capable of being. Unfortunately, as the book demonstrates, this IS, in fact, primarily limited to the membership itself, and practiced insofar as compliance with the directives of the Watchtower organization's leadership is maintained, first and foremost. The potential among Jehovah's Witnesses is there, but still manages to fall far short of the ideal--and yet the typical Witness thinks of this aspect of their religion as fine and acceptable before God.Tami takes the time to describe her life at home in such a way that the reader should be able to draw a reasonably clear picture of the demands on parents as they prepare their families for meetings, meeting participation, the challenges of having school-aged children when holidays are observed, and many other aspects of daily living (including association with non-Witnesses as childhood friends) that non-Witnesses may not be aware of apart from the common jokes and disdain held against Jehovah's Witnesses in general. There should be no question in the reader's mind by the time they finish those sections of the book where she talks about her parent's efforts to meet organizational obligations that the load is heavy and challenging. One issue in particular was her describing the drudgery for younger ones who are expected to sit quietly and keep themselves dutifully preoccupied whether it's during a meeting or an all-day assembly, rather than being placed in a more age-appropriate setting such as mainstream churches have for their younger attendees. In my own experience as a former Witness parent, I was actually relieved when my youngest children would fall asleep on the floor during a meeting or assembly or convention, because I felt so bad for them, and even my best efforts to try to make the enduring marathon of weekly meetings always seemed never enough.Tami also makes it a point to cover other aspects of Witness life, going into detail about the process by which someone becomes a member of the Watchtower organization and subsequently recognized as one of "Jehovah's Witnesses." Non-Witnesses and potential members alike will find the information accurate and surprisingly tedious; but as she points out, the reason for the process being so excessive is due to the emphasis on unity through uniformity, and this uniformity being based on doctrinal acceptance of Watchtower theology as published and practiced at the time that the potential member undergoes admission into the organization. She also does a wonderful job in describing the shifts in social acceptance within the congregation as the individual member first becomes one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and then changes based on that individual's responsiveness to and compliance with the organizational obligations, such as field service, meeting attendance, and participation in the meetings. Too, she touches on another aspect of life among Jehovah's Witnesses, when she describes how general members tend to view other members who hold particular stations, ranging from pioneers to elders to circuit overseers, up to and including those congregations who discover that they have an "anointed" brother or sister among them. Perhaps the hardest thing to come to terms with for Witnesses who suddenly find themselves at odds with the Watchtower organization is that the "Christian" love that they have touted and practiced and been shown for perhaps their entire lives is, in fact, strictly conditional and controlled by organizational stipulation, intended to control and manipulate the members into conformity, under the guise of "unity."Tami's coverage of the range of topics in the book are sound and personalized in such a way that the reader can't help but realize that she is speaking from experience. Scattered throughout the earlier sections of the book are her side thoughts which she comes back to later in the book as she begins to relate her own crisis of individual conscience and how it eventually but inevitably led to her own disfellowshipping (excommunication) from the Watchtower organization. Here, too, Tami makes sure to take the time to describe the disciplinary process within the organization so that the reader, who may not know about this, can perhaps better understand what it means to a Witness who finds themselves cut-off from everyone they may have known their entire lives, even one's own spouse and children in many cases. The last part of the book (not counting the appendices) is used to relate her own struggles as she came to terms with life outside of the organization. Here, again, it is impossible for a non-Witness to truly comprehend this unique, challenging stage of healing, although Tami's narrative does a respectable job of what she did in her particular situation. What worked for her may not work for the next person, unfortunately. But having a loving, compassionate support mechanism of some sort is of the utmost importance, regardless, and I think Tami makes that point clear. Thankfully, Tami was able to find her means of spiritual and social support throughout her healing process. Tragically, there are countless others who are not so fortunate.Without question, Tami's book is a much-welcomed and appreciated personal account, and I feel privileged to have been able to read it in book form, having known her for years now through online forums and her personal website. I am painfully aware that this review is far too brief, for there is much more I would have liked to touch upon from her book, and I worry that I am not doing Tami justice by my brevity.Still, I hope that others take the time to read this book, especially those who are right now feeling isolated, alone, and discouraged because of their own crisis of individual conscience, and who may have been cast from the ranks of the Watchtower organization, from perhaps the only life they have ever known.--Timothy Kline

I lost a marriage due to JW. I met my future wife in AA. After five years of marriage and sobriety, she decided to return to JW and quit AA. AA is base on H. O. W. which stands for honesty openness and willingness. JW is not HOW. It cost me $90,000 and my house to get away from the cult, but was worth every penny. The book help me understand many aspects of JW that only a long time member would have knowledge from her experiences. I regret ever having any experience with that cult.

Many grammatical errors and places where the text just ends, then starts somewhere else. Still, one can read around such things. I'd like to see some of the missing material in Chapters 10, 11 and 12. The author comes away from her experience still believing many of the JW's false doctrines. She would do well to take some comparative religion classes and talk to people from other religions regarding doctrines like soul sleeping, etc. There are many questions this book answers. I was amazed that the sect discourages higher education, but it doesn't surprise me. Education and interaction with others outside their religion are the two biggest threats to the Society. Their Bible translation is widely regarded as being a joke. It's never used in comparative translations and only members of the WBTS would use it.

As a former jw, I can tell you that everything that this author has written about the organization, it's practices and its beliefs is 100 percent accurate.

I was also raised as one of "Jehovah's Witnesses." The book revealed a remarkable parallel to my own life. Tami Dickerson, you just plain nailed this one. Good job. It is nice to know i am not alone...

Very well documented, this book is a very informative tool
