About the Author
Father Simeon, O.C.S.O. (formerly Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis) obtained his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Theology from Emory University. Formerly a Professor of Literature and Theology at the University of San Francisco, he is now a Trappist monk at St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Mass. In addition to Vols. 1 & 2 of Fire of Mercy , he is the author of several other books including The Way of the Disciple and Love's Sacred Order.

This is a book of meditations on six Gospel episodes written with L-M's characteristic grace and close reading. It is clear and uncompromising about what Christian discipleship means. In persuasive power, it ranks with Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship. A reinforcement for Christians, dangerous to sceptics.
Earlier book by now Brother Simeon. He's better known for the volume set Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word. Best explications- literary, linguistic and theological- of Matthew's gospel I've ever read. This brief gem charts / tracks the Way of the disciple and uses famous passage from scripture to show how Jesus calls us; if we accept the call, our lives are changed forever.
Jan 26th 2011 Update on my previous review for anyone interested:I have just finished this work. I took my time before the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration with each line. My soul has been moved, refined, changed by Mr. Merikakis' thoughts, elucidations, his prayer that bathed this little book. I am eternally grateful. I have purchased many (10 or more)to give as gifts.If you only read one of his works, read this one. It is his easiest to understand, it is sublime yet somehow earthy....a little of Heaven and Earth in your hands, savored in the heart.- Peace of Jesus Christ, King of Kings, Lover beyond the grasping, to each one of you.- debbyold review: posted in the Fall 2010If you have never read Erasmo, you have no idea what I mean by my "title." This man has a mind that is reminiscent of the great medieval Renaissance minds....lucid, visionary, erudite yet comprehensible. Now you shall surely laugh at what I am about to say! I have read only the very beginning of this particular work of his, and for some reason that I cannot remember, I read his translation of a meditation on the Annunciation at the end of this book first. His words penetrated my heart so deeply that I cannot get past them, but have re-read them again and again. My goal is to read this little book for my Advent devotion. I had previously chosen something else, but it would seem that my dear Mother Mary would have me savor this one. Maybe She will use this book to cultivate within my soul a more suitable place for the coming of Her Son the King. Maybe I will be more His own disciple. I pray so! (wouldn't that be a lovely gift for Him?) I pray for this man Erasmo. As one who has "unclean lips and is slow of speech" I stand before the Holy God present in Erasmo's work of love, fire from his soul, truly a burning bush! May my feet be bare and my heart wide open to receive what ever He chooses to plant there. Lead me on, Lord! And grant this son of Yours, Erasmo(our Moses), to enter the Promised Land sooner rather than later.Let us all pray for each other and thank God for His gifts present in each of us in such different arrays! Make me all Yours, Lord.
I love this book. I am still reading it and haven't finished it. I ordered it for the Kindle, but I may have to get another copy in hard copy because this is a favorite. Very helpful in discerning the life as a Disciple, particularly in our call for the New Evangelization!
Powerful read!
It is an extremely powerful presentation of the deep love of Christ for the soul and a moving response which at the reach of anyone.I have shared these 'meditations' with some friends and found that they themselves were deeply moved to become ever more displaces of Jesus and desired to disciple.
Absolutely fantastic--deeply spiritual, and with some scholarly muscle. Everyone should read this unique author. Great for a bible study.
This is an excellent book. Worthy to be included on your annual reading list.
