Review

3 STARRED REVIEWS “Drawings, words, and a few photos combine to convey the depth of a tragedy that would leave most people dumbstruck.” (Kirkus Reviews - STARRED review)“Fies' personal, journalistic writing is more than matched by his massively appealing, bright, and pleasantly old-school comics style . . . Sometimes incorporating photographs and often communicating emotion with color, he affectingly relates the grief, rage, and powerlessness of losing one's home and possessions; each time he remembers another thing he's lost—home videos he'd been meaning to digitize, for instance—the pain feels brand-new again. Inviting, empathy-driven, and ultimately hopeful in the face of hardship.” (Booklist, Starred Review)“‘On Monday, my house disappeared,’ begins this quietly devastating graphic memoir . . . Despite the pain he and his wife endure sifting through the ashes, Fies goes light on sentimentality, instead focusing on the realities of surviving the crisis and rebuilding literally from the ground up . . . Without pleading or preaching, this affecting record guides readers through the experience of enormous loss, then out through the other side.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)“Subtle and heart-wrenching.” (Press Democrat)“As striking as it is detailed.” (Entertainment Weekly)“An effective snapshot of a broad disaster.” (io9)“Vibrant coloring and fascinating secondary stories create a gripping read that will attract graphic memoir fans and anyone seeking firsthand accounts of surviving a natural disaster.” (Library Journal)“Brian Fies sat down with some Sharpies and some paper to process his pain the way he knows best. He began to draw. The result is A Fire Story . . . a webcomic that recounts the heart-wrenching devastation the California wildfires has wrought. Fies is a graphic novelist, one of the best in his field. A few years ago, when his mom was battling terminal cancer, he processed his grief by writing the comic Mom’s Cancer. It won an Eisner Award, one of the comic world’s highest achievements. Now he’s had to do it all over again.” (CNN)“The unimaginable has been laid out on the page by author and artist Brian Fies. Brian’s own story provides the framework, but he also incorporates the vivid recollection of others to paint a picture of a horrendous night and its aftermath. A Fire Story is more than just a graphic novel, it is journalism and memoir at its best.” (Jean Schulz, President, the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California)“A Fire Story is that most potent of accounts, both immediate yet timeless. Brian Fies’s deceptively simple words and pictures drew me in from page one, then delivered a triple punch to the gut: clutching dread, followed by hollow despair, and ultimately quiet, unquenchable determination. You don’t merely read this, you feel it.” (Richard Pini, ElfQuest)

Heartfelt memoir about losing your home in the worst wildfire in decades. A Fire Story is sad but ultimately uplifting.Multiple fires merged into a Northern California firestorm of epic proportions. The resulting burn area was the size of 15 Manhattans. Entire neighborhoods burned to the ground overnight. Warnings were mishandled so many survivors had virtually no time to take any belongings. Others didn’t escape in time. The author, a graphic memoirist, uses his craft to document, in real time, the horrific experience of losing your home and all your stuff in a split second. While he is grateful his family is safe, he states, “Well-meaning people say, ‘It’s just stuff.’ But it’s our stuff. Stuff we created. Stuff we treasured. Stuff from our ancestors we wanted our descendants to have. Stuff is a marker of time and memory. It’s roots.”Wow, A Fire Story is so real! It throws the reader into a situation that, luckily, few will experience. It will make you appreciate your own stuff more. For myself, I live in a fire-prone area. We’ve been across the street, literally, from two major fires in two different homes and subject to voluntary evacuation orders. I have a bug-out bag of my family pictures and heirlooms ready to go. Are you ready? If you have been toying with prepping for disaster as a New Year’s resolution, A Fire Story is an excellent shove in that direction. But it is also an exceptional look at human resilience and resourcefulness. I can’t recommend it highly enough. 5 stars! Thanks to the publisher, Abrams ComicArts, and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Whether it's facing a life-threatening illness ("Mom's Cancer") facing fears of the future ("Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow") or seeing everything you've ever owned literally disappear in a puff of smoke ("A Fire Story") Brian Fies weaves true, compelling stories in down-to-earth, human terms.Through his words and drawings, Brian puts the reader in the center of the 2017 maelstrom that took his home and his neighborhood away. Pondering the unimaginable, such as thinking of what items to rescue in the back seat of your car when your world is 10 minutes away from oblivion, is only one of the many painful decisions and questions the Fies family had to deal with, along with so many other victims of the Tubbs Fire. To be able to portray the terror and cataclysms of that night and the soul-crushing days that followed is a rare talent, and Brian shares his insights and art with the world brilliantly in this magnificent volume.I'm choosing five stars for this review because Amazon won't let me score it a 10. Do yourself a favor and savor this book slowly.

In the week or two following the fire, I ran across a couple of brief "comic strips" (for lack of a better term) on Facebook recounting his experience that night. A couple of frames still linger in my brain. The image of him standing with empty shopping cart in Home Depot (I think) and needing everything... and nothing. At least nothing a homeowner would need. The other image was of him looking down at the keys in his pocket, many of which no longer had a purpose.... like his front door key. Just ordered the book. Can't wait to read it.
