This is how I can tell I'm reading a good book: I stop put away everything else. I enjoy reading several books at a time, flitting between them. Yet from time to time I'm gripped by a book that makes me set the others aside. And I stay up wayyyy too late to find out what's going to happen next. And next. And next. This was such a narrative. Making me suspend my other interests till I'd seen this one through to the end.Return To Glow has every ingredient I like in a memoir. There's the adventure of it, there's pithily observed self discovery, and there's an ineffable spiritual component. Chandi Wyant undertakes her journey in a particularly weakened state, in recovery from a near-death bodily trauma -- while also reeling from the collapse of her marriage.I think you'll appreciate her pluck as she's seized with the idea to hike the Via Francigena. Though without funds she cleverly figures out a means for financing her trek. She seems so frail you almost cry out at the beginning, Stop! Don't go! But she does and you exult with her every step of the way. Her love of Italy spills over page after page. Centuries rush up to meet the present as she trods the ancient path to Rome. The author also excels at conveying the spaciousness -- and isolation -- of setting out on a difficult hike alone. As a female in Italy.Though Wyant deftly portrays the people in her life and those she encounters in her travels, it was the step after step after step regeneration of body and soul that held me fast. In a busy, connected world, it's transporting to enter a zone of silence, the almost supernatural kind you experience when you become a tag-along spirit to one who ventures forth alone.

This is a richly textured book that weaves many story threads into the author's pilgrimage of renewal. As a long distance solo hiker myself, I felt myself drawn in at every mention of her efforts to stay on her path to her physical destination. As a person who considers myself spiritual, but not religious, I felt fully engaged in her descriptions of the intersections between faiths and philosophies and the tension that exists as one is drawn towards or away from a direction. As a person who has dealt with the emotional consequences of divorce, I cheered the author on as her pilgrimage moved her away from the burdens which she still carried from that trauma. My point of view for this book was that of a fellow traveler. I believe, however, that any person who desires insights on introspection, acceptance, and growth would benefit from this story and find many applications to their own path. More than once, I found myself thinking,"Go, Chandi, go!!" I now have a wonderful example to help motivate me when I need to hear a voice saying, "Go!!".

Italy has always been a favorite travel destination of mine. A long time ago when I was a kid,my father took the family to Rome, when he was working at the US Embassy in Greece. As an adult I have traveled back to Italy three times, Tuscany twice and also Venice. This author's description of the people and landscapes is right on, totally authentic. It brought back memories and I'm planning another trip. Much more than a simple travel memoir, I also was deeply moved by the author's candid reflections on her personal life.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought it would be a mundane daily run-through of each day on the trail. However, I found it entertaining, introspective, and really liked it. It was introspective in a good and healing way; the authors healing. I don't feel that she went on this walk just to be able to have something to write about and sell a book, or just to finance a pleasant vacation in Italy. Those books make me feel so used. I think she incorporated this walk and this book into a whole picture of her growth through things that were unsatisfying and painful for her She used this walk to think about them and grow from them. The book was a witness of how someone can use things they love and places they love to change and mature. Something like that in the hands of lesser writer can be so unpleasant. Good writers, like this one, can make any story worthwhile reading. I did enjoy this very much and recommend it. It wasn't just a story of her own life journey. It was also a story of the country of Italy and the experience of the Via Francigena, a "pilgrimage pathway through the Italian countryside.
