This book does more harm to Oxfordians than good. It seems like, in an effort to say something new without actually finding anything new, he just makes wild leaps that seem to have no basis in anything but his own hypotheses. He claims Anne Boleyn believed herself to be Henry's bastard daughter, based on a love note she wrote him which in no way suggests anything of sort. He makes the claim that, in promising to Henry to be loving and kind, she clearly means kind as kin, so she's admitting she thinks her lover is her father. Sure, Jan. I stopped reading barely a chapter in, when in describing Elizabeth being molested by her stepfather, he describes it as being her raw sexual energy that caused it, and then wraps it up by calling the then-fourteen-year-old Elizabeth (not even an adult woman by Tudor standards) a "fully sexual adult." There are mountains of evidence that Edward DeVere was the true author, but unfortunately, with the exception of references to points made by more dilligent scholars, they won't be found in this ridiculous, farcical book. This book is just page after page of bizarre, baseless leaps. 2 + 2 = 47. You can pass on this.

I enjoyed the book and thought it was interesting, but whether or not it was the "true history" or not remains to be seen!

This is a terrific book - my favourite amongst the now imposing library of works on the Shakespeare Authorship Question (`the SAQ'), the great majority of which now support Edward De Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford as the true author of the Shakespearean canon of plays and poetry. When I gave this to an Oxfordian friend of mine to read he simply declared that "He's nailed it!" This was a person who had first introduced me to Charlton Ogburn (jnr's), 'Mysterious William Shakespeare' about 10 years ago and I think his pithy remark encapsulates what for those of us we have been looking for in the examination of the authorship question - and that is the deeper links between the life and the poetic drama and torments of the plays and the poetry. Beauclerk's literary analysis is simply the best thing I have read in decades.Yet as much as I love this book, I almost feel there needs to be a warning on the cover: NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS TO THE AUTHORSHIP DEBATE! In saying that I don't think that means that people who aren't beginners to the authorship question need to agree with everything Beauclerk has to say - indeed in the two years since I read this I am now less convinced on one of the key premises myself - however the danger with jumping into this without first absorbing some of the more `basic' works which challenge Stratfordian orthodoxy, is that the more fundamental `baby' of Oxford's authorship - first clearly identified in 1920 by Thomas Looney - will be thrown out by readers who can't see it for the more shocking bathwater! As 3 star review from open minded `newbie' Joe Keenan notes, Beauclerk doesn't seek to justify Oxford's authorship, and without this justification the reader who is as yet not totally convinced of Oxford's authorship may find Beauclerk fitting the facts backwards to match his thesis. This is the concern that many Oxfordians have had with the movie Anonymous. While movie makers, like Anonymous Director Roland Emmerich might like to shock, shouldn't we first get people to accept the reality of the baby first? Beauclerk and Emmerich probably reject this in principle. Part of Emmerich's motivations might have been to entertain but I expect Beauclerk (and possibly Emmerich) would also wish to argue that a pristine baby is less realistic - and thus ultimately less convincing - and that it is only with the bathwater that we can see the whole messy reality. The question that Oxfordians have struggled with is not any doubt about Oxford's authorship - Orson Wells famously summed up the attitude of all Oxfordians soon after he had read Looney's book, when he said that if you didn't believe that Oxford was the author there were an "awful lot of coincidences which needed to be explained". Nor is the key question related to the naive notion of Stratfordians that Oxford's authorship could not have been hidden from public view during the era of growing police-state power under Elizabeth. No, the key question is why it was hidden and hidden beneath the mask of another man, apparently with the intention that this anonymity and false identity should be forever. Oxfordians since Looney have grappled with this - Beauclerk is the latest and most compelling of the authors in this investigation. So, at the risk of stretching this metaphor too far, what's the bathwater? Readers of the earlier 5 star reviews will see that Beauclerk's book builds on the thesis of Paul Streitz in 2001 that Oxford is Elizabeth's son from an affair she had in her around the age of 16. Working backwards Streitz's work builds on the massive 1300 page tome of Dorothy and Charlton Ogburn (snr) 'This Star of England' (1952) that Oxford was Elizabeth's lover in the 1570s (but not her son) when he was about 24 and she was about 40, and that she had a child by this affair, one Henry Wriothesely, later known to history as the Third Earl of Southampton, the person to whom Shakespeare's two long poems 'Venus and Adonis' (1593) and 'The Rape of Lucrece' (1594) are dedicated (and who later was lucky not to lose his head as a result of his involvement in the Essex rebellion of 1601). The Ogburn's thesis is known as the Prince Tudor 1 (or Henry Tudor 1) thesis - Henry Wriothesely effectively being the future Tudor Prince Henry; and the Streitz's thesis which incorporates this, with Oxford being the Queen's son, is the Prince Tudor II thesis.Clearly, quite apart from the fact that the creaking Stratfordian orthodoxy won't even countenance talk of there being an authorship question, let alone that Oxford is the most obvious candidate, accepting PTII not only requires you to disagree with the English nationalist shibboleth that Elizabeth was a virgin (per PTI which the senior Ogburns were cruelly socially ostracised for, for the rest of their lives), the fact that PTII incorporates PTI requires that you also believe that Elizabeth and her son had incest is going to be quite a stretch for anyone who is new to the discussion! Could it be true? Well although these days I now believe that Streitz was right in concluding Oxford was Elizabeth's son, I'm less convinced that Oxford and his mother had sex together, and hence were Wriothesley's parents (per PTI). In other words, when he promulgated Oxford as Elizabeth's son Streitz would have done better, in my view, to jettison the validity of the senior Ogburn's PTI thesis; and to argue in effect that he had come to an alternative thesis not a complementary one. Could this be just because I am squeamish? Perhaps, but I don't really think so.It is actually amusing for me to recall that when I was in high school in the 1970s there was a lot of titillating speculation about the suggestion of incest between Hamlet and his mother, Queen Gertrude. One famous director of the play (I can't recall who) had Hamlet hovering sexually over his mother who was prostrate on her bed in their great scene together. Serious academic critics wrote deeply about the Freudian undertone to this powerful mother/son relationship. But you see that was in the day when most Shakespearean literary critics stuck to their knitting. Blissfully ignorant of the SAQ, these brilliant literary psychoanalysts of human drama - Jan Kott, Wilson Knight come to mind - delved deeply into the plays without any fear that they were about to lose tenure because they had transgressed from orthodoxy. That changed gradually over the 20th century however as authorship orthodoxy came under increasing challenge, initially in fits and starts but then with ever mounting pressure from time of Charlton Ogburn jnr's masterwork 'The Mysterious William Shakespeare'(1984). With the challenge initially coming from a bevy of `amateurs' from outside the academy - some admittedly a bit bonkers in the early decades - the academy saw a challenge to its credibility and funding from the Stratfordian Birthplace tourism funds, and have been mounting increasingly hysterical attempts to make the works fit the meagre and uninspiring profile of the Stratford man. This has not only been pathetic and outside the competence of literary critics - they are generally much less qualified in historical analysis than many of the authors they deride as amateurs - it has also led to a tragic abandonment of what had been their true area of expertise, namely insightful and fearless literary analysis based on the TEXT, not on biographical fictions about the Stratford man.Literary criticism and Shakespearean pedagogy has suffered terribly because nowadays there are no orthodox academics who have the courage to talk about the sexual tension between Hamlet and his mother, because to do so would be to invite the question: what could that possibly infer about the author and his relationship to his own mother? The only tenure-safe approach is to not touch the subject, or to argue pathetically that such tensions in the play have nothing to do with the psychology of the author - that great drama and poetry can be disembodied from the emotional being of the author who created them. (Oxfordian Steven McClarran, has thoroughly exposed this orthodox `murder' of the emotional life of Shakespeare in his big work 'I Come to Bury Shaksper'.)I don't know if Oxford and Elizabeth had sexual congress but I do know they had an extraordinarily intimate and tempestuous relationship. These days I am more inclined to believe that it is sufficient to explain their relationship, and Shakespeare's works, simply because they were indeed mother and son. On this score I think Streitz was right - 'Hamlet' is biography and once you see that, everything falls into place. However, unlike Streitz, Beauclerk and Hank Whittemore (the leaders of the Prince Tudor II thesis) I don't think Southampton has to be the progeny of the Queen. There is a case for it but it strikes me these days as less sure than the foundational realisation that Oxford is Elizabeth's son - the brilliant son of the brilliant mother. The problem as I see it is that the more speculative paradigm of them being lovers preceded in time the more credible paradigm of them being mother and son, and the acceptance of the one paradigm before the other has led much PTII analysis astray - or at least I am becoming suspicious of this the more certain the PTII adherents become in some of their interpretations of certain Sonnets. As such, I'm inclined now to opt for something like 'Prince Tudor 1.5' ! The brilliant young princess became pregnant (there are a couple of good candidates for the father, Seymour or De Vere senior), and she and her son (Oxford) have a highly tempestuous relationship which he writes about in plays and poems. When he is in his twenties he has an affair with the Countess of Southampton, which leads to the birth of Henry Wriothesely, his son and Elizabeth's grandson - no incest required. But isn't it possible that apart from just metaphorically 'hovering over her on the bed' they went all the way? Did the real Queen Gertrude, as it were, actually throw back the covers! Beauclerk's book provides a powerful narrative for how this could happen. I think he (and PTII generally) might be wrong on this one speculative issue but in challenging us to consider this he has produced a compelling narrative which can only make you think. As a precaution though, if you are new to the authorship debate I would recommend some 'primer' reading. While there are now dozens of possible recommendations, I propose the following basic reading list before tackling Beauclerk:1. Tony Pointon, 'The Man who Was Never Shakespeare' - destroys Stratfordianism and narrows the field of credible alternatives to three contenders Bacon, Mary Sidney, and Oxford.2. Mark Anderson, 'Shakespeare by Another Name' - the modern classic matching Oxford's life to the plays and Sonnets.3. Katherine Chiljin, 'Shakespeare Suppressed' - examines the Essex rebellion to explain why Shakespeare's works are caught in it and need to be suppressed. With these under your belt, you should have a confident hold of the 'baby' and be in a position to decide how much, if any, of the 'bathwater' in Beauclerk needs to be jettisoned.

In depth recounting of the history of the period, but I think the author may give Edward DeVere too much credit for the English Renaissance in literature. Many of his conclusions, such as that Edward DeVere was Elizabeth I's son and her paramour, cannot be proved or disproved, but they do seem to be a stretch.

Beauclerk is a bard himself, although he hates the analogy. Not a work I would normally read, but he's a fine chap, and I look forward to his book about John Ogdon, hopefully published this spring.

The author, Charles Beauclerk, has done something remarkable. He's used Shakespeare's own words to give us insight into what motivated all Shakespeare's works. By a combination of studying who might be the member of royalty who had to remain anonymous in order to survive during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Beauclerk creates the most likely story of "Shakespeare's" need to write so both his contemporaries and posterity could know what this queen had deprived him of. His approach to research is in contrast to what others who try to figure out exactly who the real Shakespeare was by only focusing on external clues.

Fascinating book! Thoroughly researched, beautifully written, deeply moving. Gives so much depth to the works of Shakespeare. Highly recommend. I read this after watching Anonymous and the PBS doc Last Will and Testament. Changes the context of so much.

Scholarly, balanced discussion of the major issues of orofacial pain by a true expert in the field. Controversies presented in an understandable way in this well-written text. Refreshing to read something in this difficult field that is neither grinding any particular axe nor being so diplomatic as to be non-instructive. Excellent book.

I love David Toop and any work he's involved in. From music to academic writing, this guy knows his stuff. He's very well versed in music and has done his research thoroughly you can tell.. He has a unique way of explaining sound and its magic, definitely grab any books he's written on the subject of sound.

Nice overview of music that falls thru thecracks-great chapter on the Ambient scene inEngland in the nineties.

David Toop is both a musician and writer, having done ambient music, dub music with the likes of Prince Far I, and of course numerous written articles on ambient and experimental aspects of popular music. I'd have to say that this book is perhaps one of the definitive studies on this musical genre, covering the aesthetics, listening practica, concepts, influences, directions, and so on of this growing musical field in a very inclusive and insightful style. This is perhaps one of the best written companions to everything ambient, as well as influences on ambient music from as far afield as Sun Ra and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Anyone interested in knowing more...either in scope, or deeper within...on ambient should obtain a copy of this book.

As an eager but somewhat overwhelmed newcomer to the world of ambient music, I've found this overview to be informative & invaluable. It's constructed like many ambient pieces: layers of information & exotica that overlap, shade into one another, and in many ways recreate in prose the experience of the music. Yet at the same time, there's a clarity & focus to the writing, which becomes apparent as the reader flows from one topic to the next. By the end, I'd not only gained some real knowledge & understanding, I'd been given some excellent starting points for further exploration. An exemplary volume, highly recommended!

Incredible in many ways, Toop's book attempts to trace a quiet revolution in twentieth century music. One cannot deny the impressive breadth of his knowledge, from Stockhausen to Miles all the way to Future Sound of London and their ilk. His writing is quite often beautiful, if occasionally one feels like he is writing too many words to actually say anything.Ultimately, however, I leave the book feeling a bit underwhelmed. Ironically, it is the book's very eclecticism that works against it. I personally did not see the connectionsbetween, say, the music of Kraftwerk and Toop's (admittedly fascinating) discussion of the sound of the Amazon jungle. These disgressions ultimately make the book useless as a survey. Of course, I doubt that it was meant to be so, but Toop fails to make the kinds of connections that have given books by Greil Marcus and others a fascinating unity.Perhaps, though, this is the point. Much like the ambient music that serves as the centerpoint of the book, this book simply floats by, not asking you to make any conclusions. It is probably best read in bits, before bed or in the bathroom, where the individual moments of brilliance can be better appreciated. Very ambient, indeed.

If you like ambient, or....atmospheric music of any sort you should give this book a chance as it a nice erudite survey of the various genres and musicians that are linked to..or been influenced by ambient music. It is not a linear survey thru time, but rather this book reminds me of a map which Toop rolls around visiting here and there with a few jumps now and then as he discusses how in the last 100 years "music has reflected the world back to itself and to its listeners". The writing is enjoyable, and full of poetry, such that I kept finding myself underlining odd bits and pieces every few pages and I wound up compiling them for myself for future reference. There is also a nice bibliography and discography at the end of the book.

I love to read about music, but there are so few good music writers it seems. This book approaches the development of incidental, ambient, experimental, avant garde, and world musics in a way that mimics the music itself - with random bursts of observations, anecdotes, interviews, and just plain bizarre missives. I encourage anyone with a sense of adventure and an open mind to grab a copy. There is a similarly-titled double CD which came out to accompany the book, but I can't see it on Amazon. It is as eclectic as the book and features a lot of the artists interviewed and mentioned - Sun Ra, Aphex Twin, and others. I have played the CD to death and would recommend it. You gotta respect a compilation that puts The Beach Boys right next to African Headcharge, or My Bloody Valentine next to Brian Eno - and makes it work so well. The book also features a list of albums and artists in the appendix, which I found useful as a way of doing further research.Another book in a similar vein is Kodwo Eshun's "More Brilliant Than The Sun", though it focuses solely on the innovators in electronic music.

This is an amazing document on the sonic explorations of the last 100 years, from improv classical to backwords dub lines to the tweak tweak nob movements of our techno, this book is brought with a fun if not intoxicating writing style. the ending of this book is getting even better with jungle sounds (the nature not the genre)

I would like to append my comment's to panopticonman's below (which I much appreciate). To contextualize myself, I am a graduate student in geography at UCLA. This quarter I am enrolled in a seminar which is reading this book, alongside Claudio Minca's volume "Postmodern Geography: Theory and Praxis." The seminar is run by Denis Cosgrove, a contributor to both volumes, and is attended by Karen Till (one of the editors of "Textures of Place") and Michael Curry, another contributor and former student of Yi-Fu Tuan. Furthermore, I have taken to identifying myself as a "humanistic geographer." Thus I have a particular insider's perspective on the work. Some minor corrections of panopticonman's comments, to contextualize the work itself. First off, humanistic geography is nothing new. Prior to this book, the most definitive statements on humanistic geography were produced in the mid-1970s, in a series of papers by Nick Entrikin, Yi-Fu Tuan, Ed Relph and Anne Buttimer (all of whom contribute to this volume), and a book titled "Humanistic Geography: Prospects and Problems." What makes "Textures" so interesting is that it is the first book in nearly 25 years to actually have the phrase "humanistic geography" in the title. In our (post)modern times, the very idea of 'humanism' has become less than fashionable, with some avowed postmodernists (see the Minca volume or "Place and the Politics of Identity") actually taking an "antihumanist" stance. Most of the contributors to "Textures" have wrestled with postmodernism before, and many would perhaps take issue with being labeled "humanists," but all have benefited from the work of Tuan and other humanistic geographers. So what you see in this volume is not so much work on postmodernism particularly, but rather on the viability and value of humanistic modes of inquiry in our postmodern context.Secondly, this book offers a very particular representation of academic geography. As panopticonman noted, what binds all the essays together is the presence (explicit or implicit) of Yi-Fu Tuan. (In fact, the book has its roots in a set of paper sessions held at a national meeting of the American Association of Geographers in Tuan's honor.) The three editors are all former students of Tuan (Till was his last formal student) and several of the contributors are former students. As well, quite a few of the contributors are colleagues of Tuan. The contributing geographers include several emeriti professors, several who have been active in the field since "humanistic geography" first emerged (and, indeed, helped to shape that perspective), and several who have begun their professorial careers in only the last 5 or 6 years. In other words, you have presented here close to 30 years or more of academic geography's history. This volume, then, is a good indicator not only of contemporary work in geography, but the historical trajectory which geography has taken. Furthermore, beyond the discipline of geography, you have represented the fields of English and American literature, art history, philosophy and anthropolgy, marking the influence of Tuan beyond his formal disciplinary boundaries. Finally, I would just like to offer something moving (slowly but inexorably) towards panopticonman's question: what is a geographer, anyway? Certainly for many of the contributors to this volume (and including myself, though I am merely a reader of the book, and lack an authorial presence), Tuan does offer a model of the ideal geographer. His intellectual project begins with a simple supposition: that geography is the study (and, following Sack's analysis, the practice) of how humans transform the world into 'home.' Tuan has been concerned throughout his career to analyze how people have actively shaped their world -- nature, relations with other people, even 'raw' space itself -- in order to transform it into meaningful places. This project involves active (materialist), normative, and aesthetic dimensions; these various dimensions are explored, singly and in combination, by the contributors to "Textures." As well, Tuan has exerted a significant pedagogical influence on geography, exemplified in Entrikin's closing essay of the volume. Entrikin identifies Tuan as "the perfect humanistic geographer," focusing on Tuan's understanding of liberal education and humanism as a philosophical outlook on the world (as expressed most particularly in "The Good Life"). The purpose of humanistic inquiry, for Tuan, "is to develop the whole person, to create a good person, and in this way to cultivate humanity" (Entrikin here connects Tuan's project up conceptually with Martha Nussbaum). This volume, drawing on the force of Tuan's personality and perspective, contributes to the cultivation of humanity through its engagement with the material, moral, and educational directives and achievements of contemporary geography.

Collections are difficult to review, especially one as wide-ranging as this. The thread that (supposedly) holds this collection together is that it is inspired by Yi-Fu Tuan, a "humanist geographer" (who, judging from his essay, and the many bouquets thrown his way in the other essays), is the very picture of a modernist major geographer. What is a geographer these days you might ask? If you were to read this book, you would have to believe that everyone who has ever read any postmodern thinkers on the subject of boundaries and/or space is a geographer. That means just about everybody, of course, as postmodernists are all about space and, dare I say it, spatiality. How soon will place be converted into platiality?Despite my snarky comments above, I like this book. Some of it postmodern ideas are only rearticulations of stuff hardcore guys like Derrida are known for, except here is is told from the perspective of geographers. I'm not sure what makes these folks geographers exactly -- in fact a couple of them are teachers of medieval literature -- but, I am sure that the majority of these essays are thoughtful and thought-provoking. Particulary fine is Wilbur Zelinsky's "The World and Its Identity Crisis" which sketches out a (very) shematic history of the world and our place in it. Here's a quote:"We find ourselves caged in a curious world of contradictions, of unprecedented personal and group anxieties. The freedom to comparison-shop among lifestyles, to rotate among multiple identities, this culmination of millennia of human struggle and progress, such power and flexibility, all this has failed to generate the bliss one might have anticipated or hoped for. Instead an increasingly large segment of First World populations, and incipiently others as well, has begun to wonder who or what they are, or should be."Here he is quoting Zygmunt Bauman:"Postmodernity is the point at which modern untying (dis-embedding, dis-encumbering) of tied (embedded, situated) identities reaches its completion: it is now all too easy to choose identity, but no longer possible to hold it. At the moment of ultimate triumph, the liberation succeeds in annihilating its object...Freedom...has given the postmodern seekers of identity all the powers of Sisyphus."So, this collection offers the general reader a chance to check out what's going on in the new world of humanist geography. Essentially it's re-thinking the ways the world, space and place have been thought about, and are thought about, which is what most post-modern stuff does. Good illustrations, mostly good writing which in some cases opens up new territory, and in others, treads over old, but still interesting, ground.

My grandfather was mentioned a few times in this book. Not many books seem to be written about those who escaped the march. Amazing to see what they went through.

Malcolm Decker has written a very readable second book on WWII in the Philippines, this time dealing with the few hundred Americans who either evaded capture or escaped from the Death March following the April 9, 1942 surrender of the Bataan defenders. The heroes of this volume are Filipinos in general and the Fassoth family in particular. The author credits twin brothers Bill and Martin Fassoth and Bill's wife Catalina with saving at least 104 American military men who escaped the Japanese. The Fassoths, German-American immigrants from Hawaii, ran a successful sugarcane plantation on Luzon. After the surrender, they organized and ran a series of four camps hidden away in the mountains and sheltering American soldiers who escaped from the Japanese. During the year that these camps survived, Bill Fassoth estimated that between 200 and 300 Americans sheltered in them. Most of the men moved on after they recuperated, with many joining guerrilla groups. Others were scattered by a series of five raids the Japanese mounted on these camps. About 100, determined to wait out the war in comparative comfort, did not willingly leave. Many of these were killed, captured or surrendered as the Japanese ratcheted up the pressure. In October, 1943 Bill and Martin Fassoth themselves surrendered when the Japanese offered leniency to those surrendering and death to anyone not turning themselves in.The author sums up this period by writing that "By October 1943, the Japanese had captured and executed virtually all the major [American] guerrilla leaders on Luzon" (p. 154). Fewer than half of about 400 escaped Americans survived the war. Both Fassoth brothers were among those surviving, but the family was never reimbursed by the U.S. government for the considerable expenses incurred sheltering Americans. The early chapters of the book briefly describe the defense of Bataan and then follow various small groups of Americans as they fled the battlefield and eventually found their way to the Fassoth camps. The last three chapters deal with the reconstruction of the guerrilla groups shattered by Japanese raids, preparations for Gen. Douglas MacArthur's return, and the liberation of the Philippines.Arguably the Philippine campaigns were the most important of the Pacific theater, as the heroic defense against the Japanese invasion bought enough time for MacArthur to secure Australia, which in turn was the launching point for his drive to liberate the Philippines. And more than half the Japanese military deaths in World War II occurred in the Philippines (p. 197).J. Michael HoulahanHistorian, Philippine Scouts Heritage Society

#32,039 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life. And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works. But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world. And that's why I believe this is their best book yet. Here's a little summary of what I learned:1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone. As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic. And that's it.Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

It is worth the time and the money. The book isn't as earth-shattering as Freakonomics, but it's pretty good. The 4 stars are very well deserved and maybe a little conservative... 5 stars might be a fair rating for the Kindle edition. If you buy the Kindle edition, in addition to the book it comes with a few articles and a Q&A session with the authors. These additions to the Kindle edition do add value. I liked their thoughts and the advice they gave the British Prime Minister on health care. The most interesting, however, was Dubner's interview:"... I think we should treat health and life and death more like a regular good....we need to - it's unfortunate, but we need to - make these horrible choices, where we decide, are going to send our kids to college or are we going to keep great-grandma alive for two more weeks, and the cost might be about the same for those two things. Right now we shy away from those decisions, and we pretend like life has infinite value and we can't make these choices."

Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for thinking. Thinking is generally done on only one way, but Think Like a Freak offers its readers a new way to think about everyday situation. The truth is that we can’t really predict the future, there IS a medical reason for that condition- not just stress, causality is not caused by correlation, saying “I don’t know” is OK, giving up is sometimes the answer, and thinking like a kid is more beneficial than you think. The authors of Think Like a Freak try to present problems in a way that spin them on their head and force the reader to change their thinking and perspective. Saying “I don’t know” is HARD for most people. It admits defeat in some sort of way and most people don’t want to be wrong or defeated, naturally. But, the authors offer a new way of thinking. Saying “I don’t know” is not defeat, it is the beginning, the jumping off point for new discovery. It also, as the authors say, offers “the power of a good, randomized experiment.” Not knowing is not defeat! As a teacher, the chapter called “What’s Your Problem?” spoke the most to me. It speaks a great deal toward the education problems in the US. Teachers are under enormous strain from almost every angle possible, and Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for tackling some of those problems. This book is changing my view of what it calls “noisy problems” and making me realize that there are new ways to experiment with learning. Students who come with baggage can be helped if we look at the problem a little differently. We all have barriers that we face out there, it is up to all of us change our perspective.

Q: What is this? A: This is a Reader's Digest version of much bigger books about Epistemology.Q: Who is it for? A: It is not for persons who have spent years reading about Epistemology (like the current writer) but for people who need something that is very light in tone and deliberately made to be very interesting.Q: What are some of the sources that expand on the nature of some of the topics covered in this book? A: 1. Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers is the New Way To Be Smart. Talks about only finding relationships between variables and not getting too caught up in cause and effects; 2. Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. Talks about making failures survivable and how learning what *doesn't* work is just as important as learning what does work; 3. Various books by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. This book talks about the limits of what *can* actually be known.Q: Do I recommend this book? A: Yes. Even for the full price (Kindle). And even for people who know most of all this information, it's good seeing the authors update said information with new and interesting examples and good prose.

It's always a hit-and-miss proposition when it comes to a good travel guide for the Caribbean and so it is with this book as well. It's not so much that it's "bad" it just isn't that good either. SInce I did purchase it for Aruba specifically it didn't bother me about the lack of detail for the other islands (I did a review of another publication for Bonaire a couple of years ago).I guess what I find lacking in many of the Frommer/Fodor books is the bias towards what the particular author liked as opposed to just providing info. For example: we did do the DePalm Island thing and since I had booked it prior to find a little blurb in this book on how she didn't find it all that big a deal, our group enjoyed it. That was a surprise to me because I felt like I had been taken after booking the non-refundable excursion and yet the 6 of us (ages 19 - 50) all found it to be just fine - expensive - but enjoyable nevertheless. So while I understand that what one person found stupid or not worthwhile doesn't necessarily translate into what you may enjoy, these books are somewhat of a necessary evil but are by no stretch the end-all, be-all of how you plan your vacation. One thing I will call out is the restaurant reviews were pretty accurate - so kudos for that!Lastly - as for the island itself...far too busy for this Caribbean traveler. Traffic in and around Oranjestad is THE WORST I have ever encountered. I will not make a return trip based on that nightmare. In ten years and 11 stays in and around the Caribbean, Aruba wins the award for worst traffic and least viable alternative for avoiding it by way of providing decent secondary roads around the city. I really feel that if you select the northern or southern end of the island, you're kinda stuck in the geographical area unless you want to spend 45 - 60 minutes negotiating Oranjestad.Your mileage may vary...good traveling!

Like most Frommer's travel guides, this is a generally informative, pocket-size guide with accurate data for general trip planning to Aruba. Great if that is your destination. However, the title is very misleading as most of the book is dedicated to Aruba, with only one chapter each devoted to the other two ABC islands. The minimal coverage of Bonaire and Curacao mainly point out differences from Aruba, but offer few details regarding the other island ammenities.Since I purchased the book in anticipation of a scuba trip to Bonaire, I found it of little use. There are other much better guides for Bonaire.

There was nothing in this book that was not available on travel websites for free. I mainly got it because i could not find much information on Curacao, and this book did not provide much value in that area. Same with Aruba, the other guidebooks i got were all better than this one. Skip it.

I bought this book before going to Aruba. Overall it was pretty good and useful. However most, if not all, the info can be found online. This book is just a way to organize the information a little better. The problem with a book is that even the most current book isn't always the most current information. So for general information about Aruba it's great. However for details about restaurants, shopping, excursions, etc online might be your best bet. If you'd like a supplement to some other research you've done about Aruba this book fits the bill.

If you are planning on going to Aruba, you will get quite a bit of info. However, if you are traveling to Curacao, there isn't much information there and there really could be. There is a lot to do in Curacao and wonderful places to eat. I realize this book is old, but much more info should be provided about Curacao. Thought it was just "ok."

Nice book to make planning your Aruba trip so much easier.

Planning a trip to Aruba? This will help you spark some ideas on hotels, side-trips and excursions, tours, food, and shopping. Once I return from my Holiday trip, I will be able to update this review with more thourough detail.

The next best thing to being there. Half of a vacation is the planning and preparation, and this book was like having a resident answer all our questions. Very thorough, very current, and very relevant. Have fun in Aruba and buy this book before you go. My only negative is it didn't have a large review of the resort I stayed at (Riu Palace). I was able to gather that info elsewhere. Have a blast in Aruba - buy this book.
