For the USA, we generally prefer Moon guides over Lonely Planet books. But this Alaska book was "meh" for us. Hasn't been updated in a while, is fairly generic for some areas, and doesn't always provide pricing info. I also had the Lonely Planet guide and found myself referring to that more often. We've lived in Alaska and know most of the places where we traveled fairly well, so maybe that's why we were more picky than other travelers might be.

We just returned from a cruise/short stay in Alaska. I used this ebook downloaded onto my iPhone quite a bit. I mostly checked out things to do and restaurants. The guide is well organized with a decent index. There are a couple of things not up to date, such as the Talkneeta Roadhouse. We went there for breakfast, but found they were not serving until 7:00 am. The guide mentions that they are open at 6:00 (which they are...they just aren't serving breakfast.) I'd recommend this guide, particularly in ebook format.

I took this on a 2 week trip to Alaska. It covered in detail most of the places we went to. Used it for recommendations on things to see and places to eat. Great guide! I just wish it had more information on Denali National and State Park, and Glacier Bay National Park. It outlined places to stay and some basics for each, but not much about all the things to see there. It had a really nice map, and lots of good suggestions for trip planning.

Nice book if you are traveling to Alaska. It has been helpful in planning my one month vacation to various parts of the state.

I am very happy I purchased this book. It has all the little details we need to know. We are cruising for part and driving for a week after. THis has given us a lot of great ideas. Very well thought out and well written.

About the Author

Gil Fronsdal has practiced Zen and Insight Meditation since 1975 and has a PhD in Buddhist Studies from Stanford University. He has trained in both the Japanese Soto Zen tradition (San Francisco Zen Center with Suzuki Roshi) and the Insight Meditation school of Theravada Buddhism from Southeast Asia. Gil was trained as a Vipassana teacher by Jack Kornfield and is part of the Vipassana teachers' collective at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He was ordained as a Soto Zen priest at the San Francisco Zen Center, and in 1995 received Dharma Transmission from Mel Weitsman, the abbot of the Berkeley Zen Center. He has been the primary teacher for the Insight Meditation Center, in Redwood City, California, since 1990. He is a husband and father of two boys.

I give this translation VERY high marks. Very well researched and written. Brings the depth of the original Pali, yet in a format that is easily readable in English, as well as styled for individual verse recitation or memorization. I'm a big Dhammapada fan, and have over 20 English translations. For a long time, my "go to" translation was by the Ven. Ananda Maitreya, but Gil Fronsdal's translation has unseated it for my daily use.I will address one criticism I've seen, that I believe is unfounded, and that is that it is a "politically correct" translation. This is based on Fronsdal's use of "herself" in a few verses instead of "himself", to be more inclusive. The Buddha's teachings have ALWAYS been inclusive for both men and women, so it does nothing to change the meaning to substitute "herself" in a few places, in fact, I would have liked it if Fronsdal had replaced "himself" with "themselves" throughout.

This work will probably be appreciated more by those who are fairly familiar with Buddhism and clear about its value in their lives. It is basic scripture and it contains most of the essential theoretical points of the tradition and employs its common terminology and stylistic elements. For the more interested scholar, there are references, commentaries and connections to related sources. It is not an explanation of Buddhism or of its relevance to contemporary life. With that understanding, I have found it to be a wonderful aid to my spiritual life. The translation is very amenable to use by native English speakers while effectively conveying the essence of Buddhist teaching. An excellent addition to the library of any of us with more than a passing interest in the subject, whether that interest is merely academic or intensely personal. While I am in no position to critique Fronsdal's skill as a scholar or as a translator, I am sufficiently familiar with the broad topic of Buddhism in the West to recommend this work without hesitation. Blessings to you in your pursuit of this topic.

Gil Fronsdal brings us a lovely, easily readable translation of the Dhammapada.His use of language is easily accessible. The size of the book is perfect for reading with one hand.Don't hate, but I keep this near the bathtub, where I use it at night to remember the practice. This will help anyone remember what and why they practice.May all beings be free of suffering and know peace!

Lets just say I went from catholic as a child, forced into Pentecostal schools and churches, became a militant atheist, then life changed in a million ways. As I started to walk a new path, I bought this book of my own volition, or maybe the universe or god guided me to it. Point is, it spoke to me. If the bible is a rule book, this is an instruction manual for life. It sits next to my bed and after reading it once, I just randomly open and read a passage that speaks to me and I try and embrace the words to live my life as the Buddha.A treasure in a world of what we think is treasure.

Having a couple translations is very helpful, as you can go back and forth and puzzle out the meaning by taking bits and pieces of different interpretations. This version reads much better than some, the author has really focused on making it 'flow'. But some translations are a bit vague, or don't make a point as clearly as others. That's par for the course with translations though. Great version, would recommend.

This was the first text I ever had on Buddhism, I've read it numerous times, and will continue to do so. The verses are clear and concise, and the translation is brilliant. This is one of those books that will gift you with new insights every time you read it. Despite the depth of the text it is still quite accessible to the reader: one spends their time digesting the lesson - rather than wondering about the translation and working to determine what it is trying to say.There are a lot of books on Buddhism, and many new ones being created - but I always prefer the classics: to get the knowledge from the original sources. As such this is my favorite book.

Judith A. Cohen, MD, a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, is Medical Director of the Center for Traumatic Stress in Children and Adolescents at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Professor of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine. Since 1983, Dr. Cohen has conducted research on the assessment and treatment of traumatized children. With Anthony P. Mannarino and Esther Deblinger, she has developed and tested TF-CBT for children and their nonoffending parents. She has served on the boards of directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), and is a recipient of the Sarah Haley Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence from ISTSS, the Outstanding Professional Award from APSAC, and the Rieger Award for Scientific Achievement from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). I primarily work with adolescents with complex trauma and attachment based disorders. When I was first exposed to TF-CBT, I was concerned about its use with complex trauma. Clients who suffer from complex trauma, typically suffer from the developmental effects of the trauma exposure, rendering them quite vulnerable to the day to day stressors several years later when unresolved. With their Stress Response Systems typically compromised, traditional top-down skill building strategies are typically not efficient enough to prepare children with these histories to process their narrative without the possibility of re-tramatization. With TF-CBT being a "16" session based approach (with the caveat that sessions have to be mastered prior to moving on), this didn't seem feasible for the "phase based approach" that is more the standard right now with children and adolescents with complex trauma. The chapter in this book on "Adolescents with Complex Trauma" was such a relief to me. This chapter, for the most part, completely covers what is missing, in my opinion, from the traditional TF-CBT approach when it comes to complex trauma. I have found that a good amount of time needs to be spent on teaching the "mapping" of distress episodes, i.e. from environmental trigger, to visceral cueing, to emotional identification, the thought development to behaviors. With younger children we teach, "A trigger can prompt a big emotion, which can prompt a big behavior. We have to learn to make the big emotion smaller, so we don't have the big behavior." This is critical prior to starting narrative processing. Narrative processing will generate big emotions, clients have to be able to recognize they are having the big emotion (typically through being attuned to visceral cueing), then they have to know how to make the big emotion smaller, so they can build their tolerance to these emotions for healthier day to day living and to support trauma processing.The initial phase of treatment is critical for this population, and over and over research is showing to "not" move into trauma narrative processing until enhanced emotional regulation and use of relationships is mastered. This time frame is dictated by the client, and can take considerably longer than what the TF-CBT model typically shows to be successful. This is typically measured by the client's capacity to handle the therapy sessions "and" be able to use co-regulation of the therapist to maintain a healthy distress state when trauma cues come up. Additionally, when clients are able to show enhanced emotional regulation/behavioral regulation during day to day (here and now) stressors - their Stress Response System is showing a higher capacity to tolerate stress in general; hence indicating they may be ready for processing of the trauma narrative/trauma themes.I have found in my work a need to STRESS that trauma informed work is "NOT" just processing the trauma narrative, but it focuses on enhancing those capacities that were compromised or disrupted at a young age, in order to enhance quality of life - not just to ready the client for trauma narrative processing. The skills built in the 1st phase of treatment alone can allow for relief to the client in feeling more safe and regulated during day to day experiences. Additionally, the addition of learning to use "safe" caregiving relationships effectively is imperative to future healthy interpersonal relationships. So, focusing on both affect regulation AND use of relationships is key in trauma informed work when working with children/adolescents with complex trauma and attachment based disorders/disruptions.

I love David McKee's Elmer books! I bought this to go with some other Elmer items to send to an unknown child in a book exchange. I hope she liked it!

I bought this to accompany the stuffed Elmer toy as a shower gift. I read the story to my 4 year old and she really enjoyed it. The book is cute, I contemplated keeping it for my daughter. I for some reason imagined it was one of those tiny little board books for babies, but it's larger.

Really cute short story that introduces different colors to kids.

I ordered this book, as well as the Elmer's stuffed animal which matched the book, for my granddaughter. She liked all the colors in the elephant and her mother said she enjoyed the story.

I had trouble finishing this book, since I found it hard to deal with some of the characters. I found the lead character unsympathetic since she let people walk all over her. She subscribed to that idea that her son could not possibly live without her and thus he failed to grow up and selfishly ruined a lot of things his mom tried to do for herself. He needed to grow up and learn how to take care of himself. There was some growth by the end of the book, but I wish she would have confronted her son sooner than she did. The lead character really suffered from a lack of confidence, and that was bothersome. It was ok, but not as funny as her first book.

This is a good book to read while on the go; doesn't require much concentration, and it was enjoyable.Audrey didn't really up and left, as the book title said. Even as she was not physically with her son, her mind kept going back and worrying what's happening with him. Well, it is how mothers are, that's just the way we are wired. Her worries about her son, though valid, were eventually eased when he stood up and took responsibility. Though the undertones of the story were serious (it's about life after all), there were a lot of funny moments in the book, mostly Audrey's musings.Here are my takeaways:1. Everyone needs a time out, we all deserve it.2. We will not always get it right the first time, most of the time actually. The important thing is to learn from when we got it wrong.

The heroine is an ultra responsible mother, worker and all around good person. She had a bit of fun for a while with a boyfriend who turns out to be triple timing her and her teenage son takes terrible advantage of her. So when she wins a French cooking course at a prestigious resort, she decides to take it instead of the cash prize and do mundane things like pay bills. She sees a different type of life and opens her eyes to the possibilities ahead. I got a bit irritated at her for her extreme pandering to her son but that made his transformation more dramatic.

I was not really impressed with this story. Perhaps it was that she let her son walk all over her and kept supporting him. Perhaps it was how long she kept meeting "Stevie"at motels. By the last few pages it was too late for me to care anymore. I just wanted it to end.

This is the first story I've ready by this author. It was funny in that Southern, somewhere between sardonic & sarcastic (bless her heart) sort of way; and in moments it was sputtering, laugh out loud. I think I'm going to look up something else by the author to see if the style is consistent. If it is, I've found a new goody.

It's hard to love a book when the lead character is such a mess and not in a funny way. You route for her because you know she's has a good heart, but her neediness and self indulgence is nerve grating. She never really upped and left! And I have such a hard time reconciling that fact that there was this big about face for her super spoiled son! The book was a bit longer than it needed to be. It could have been wrapped up faster and for realistic sake, better. That being said, I did like that she did grow as a person and again, you really wanted her to win and stop self sabotaging herself, which she does. Interesting read...

Although I very much enjoyed The woman who met her match, I can't say the same for this novel.Couldn't relate to Audrey. A hard working mom who let her son live like a slob, doing nothing except having sex with his girlfriend in the next room. No backbone educating her son, treats him like a 8 year old. No point to the story really.

This book was an easy read and quite enjoyable for the most part. I was, however, disappointed with the last four chapters when everything seemed to resolve itself suddenly and almost miraculously.I would consider reading this author again.

I truly enjoyed this book, for it has a plethora of information on the textile industry mainly focusing on Indigo! The author details her interesting journey on looking for authentic indigo fabric and the new people she meets as she seeks this majestic dye and talks to textile traders. It also gives you a glimpse into the West Africa Markets and culture. Such an interesting read!

Unfortunately, Catherine McKinley’s “Indigo” is another one of those books that could go grossly overlooked because it’s informative. Truly her search for indigo revealed the severe tie between cloth and world history everywhere.A reader will get much more than the story of indigo in the world of textiles. In this narrative ethnography, full of desire and color, the reader will be introduced to the Nigerian medical doctor who discovers a cure for AIDS but then just a few pages later the reader gets folded back into cloth while learning that the Netherlands was the fourth-largest, slave-trading nation whose Dutch textiles made up 57 percent of the goods exchanged for human lives during their slave trade. Cloth constituted more than 50 percent of European exports to West Africa on a whole by the late 1600s—so that we see the incredible importance of cloth to West Africans that they would exchange lives for it. Concurrently, abolitionists over in America were staging boycotts of indigo and all of this information goes very well towards feeding the reader with the zeitgeist of the times.Cloth takes on its own persona in "Indigo." McKinley makes cloth come alive as she explores its processes and its history in pre-colonial Africa as well. She effectively runs through the various types of cloth that were exchanged from East to West and North to South. Everyone around the world loved cloth in all its colors and textures. She also succinctly points out on a general note that the making of the ‘beauty’ during colonialism is also the making of the crisis that consumed many West African countries post-colonialism.Every bit of indigo McKinley can find not only furthers her Fulbright research but furthers her insatiable desire to 'feel' the history of the people when it is not readily communicable from its owners. She believes in understanding by osmosis so that when she lacks the information to steer her in the right direction for more culture, rather than assuming there is no more knowledge to be gotten, her self-determination, sheer faith, and belief in the power of cloth pushes her straight through to the places she needs to go and the people she needs to meet over and over again throughout her West African journey.The textile cultures McKinley discovers have been in West Africa for a very long time and as the needs of a global economy loom, she explains how that has necessitated that many West Africans start to place the pursuit of financial gain over the maintenance of laborious yet ancient and rare textile traditions. These cloth traditions do more than impart beauty but also translate generational heritage as indigo has been included in dowries passed down from mother to daughter and the symbolism embedded in the cloth itself expresses the various cultural values from ethnicity to ethnicity and country to country that she explores.

This book explores indigo-dyed cloth as an object with historical, cultural and aesthetic meanings ranging from its valences in ancient Dahomey to its importance as an object of the transatlantic slave trade to the personal meanings ascribed to it by the author, whose aesthetic passion motivates both her research and her thrilling travel memoir. I have not yet visited Africa, but the book recreated it for me: the colorful swirl and buzz of its marketplaces, the difficulty and joy of travel and daily life there, the amazing warmth and vibrancy of its ancient cultures: Yoruba, Ewe, Dahomeyan, to name only a few of those depicted in the book. What I found particularly transporting were the characters, especially the wise and witty Eurama, and the masterful way in which McKinley weaves elements of her personal story with facts about indigo. The way the book shows the richness and complexity of Africa is mindful of the work of the Nigerian writer Ben Okri, but the vivid clarity of the writing recalls the work of the celebrated Zora Neale Hurston. A hybrid of memoir, travelogue, and historical and cultural research, this unique book explores and challenges boundaries; it is a MUST READ for anybody curious about the complexity and uncanniness of global history and aesthetics!

A friend recommended this book to me. The mixed reviews on Amazon prepared me for a very individual and ideosyncratic approach. It's not so much about indigo but more about the social interaction through the ages with this dye source. I enjoyed the book very much. I would recommend it to people who like books in which the author is closely engaged with the subject. Our knowledge of her journey about the uses of indigo increases as we progress through the book!

The lush dye-pot indigo blue of the outside cover and the detailed designs on the inside cover are a fitting wrapper for an exquisitely crafted book in which multiple threads of the author's search for indigo unfold in line after line of beautiful Renaissance fonts inlaid on rich stock.An indigo lover myself, I could not put it down. As soon as I realized book seven in what is now my favorite Amanda M Lee series was leading to an appearance by the cast the series that introduced me to this wonderful author's world, I put everything on hold so I could power read my way through to get to Freaky Witches. I was not disappointed in the least! The mystery is a little slight but the character growth of Poet and company as well as fantastic scenes between the circus and Bay's family made up for it. Now all I have to do is make time speed up so I can read about the circus folk meeting the Grimlock Family!

Let me start by saying right off that I am the worst at reviews. I'm just going to tell you that I personally love Amanda M. Lee's books especially the Mystic Caravan series. This offering is a crossover with another one of her series with is also good. I don't think you have to follow that one (Witches of the Midwest) to enjoy this book. Oh and there is supernatural elements to the series but not as much in this book as most. I do recommend it.

This was another winner. I love the new characters in this series. This series is new for me but had my favorite witch family in it. So happy to see both in a new series to read. I highly recommend all her different series as she writes wonderful storylines and great characters in all her books. Diana Romano

This book renewed my I interest in the Mystic Caravan and the Winchester witches. It brought back the warmth and laughter of the early Winchester witches stories an made me laugh out loud once again at Aunt Tillie's actions. This is a great crossover novel and is well worth reading.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the circus, but this series has me counting down days until the next release. I love this series full of all kinds of creatures, mystery, romance, and magic. If any of those things appeal to you I would highly recommend this series!

This is a really good book by a very talented writer. The storyline kept me on my toes. I can't wait for the next book about Poet's adventures by my number one favorite author. Ms. Lee is a very good and original storyteller! You won't be disappointed at all.

My favorite book of all time!I've been waiting for this book and it does not disappoint. This book is amazing, Wonderful, Hilarious! I honestly could have read another 500 pages of these 2 groups coming together and still wanted more.

This book is another great story in the Mystic Caravan Mystery series. The characters are engaging and fun and easy to relate to. The story is interesting and exciting. You will definitely enjoy this book. Pick it up.
