My five year old loves to draw and color. This book proved perfect for her. The instructions are simple enough for her to follow without assistance. This allows her to draw every animal in the book on her first try, improving with each effort thereafter. Some drawing books seem to advanced for young children proving frustrating; this one, on the other hand, is easy enough to allow confidence and challenging enough for her to continue to grow her coloring and drawing skills.

A friend recommended I get this book for my 4-year-old. This is an outstanding book, and even I got to learn how to draw some animals! Ha, ha! Yes, and I'm... well over 35. Anyway, I can't recommend this book enough. It's a fun activity that you can do together with your kid or for your kid to do on his or her own. Or, if you're like me, spend a few minutes mastering some drawing skills yourself. Lovely depiction of different animals and easy to follow. You may need to provide some hand-over-hand assistance to your child if your child gets stuck. That's normal.

I've never taught my 5 year old to draw anything, she just looked at the step by step pictures and did it herself...this book is great, brought out her potential for art. She has fun making up her own stories now and drawing her own characters.

The quality is amazing of this book amd the drawings are easy to follow. But I wanted more ideas so I went and I bought the other Usborne book. Both are amazing books, now all depends on your preferences

This is our favorite Usborne book. My son is 4 and he loves these I Can Draw books. We have quite a collection of drawings now. They are great basic books that show step by step how to draw animals. Five steps and you have a great basic animal your kid can be proud of. Also has versions of the same thing or ways to elaborate once basics are learned. I LOVE this book!

I love mythology and this one brings Mayan legends to life! The creation stories in particular are beautifully written. I urge readers to not give up with the hard to pronounce names and definitions in the beginning, just slog through and refer back if you find you need it. Most of the names are given in English and the stories are easily understandable without it! But it speaks volumes to the author's attention to detail that he took the time to research the meanings behind it!

What a wonderful treasure! This guide to Maya Mythology brings the people to life right on the pages before you! From Creation to Death, these stories have it all! Recommended for anyone interested in History, Mythology or just a good story!

This was a great read except for the yearly calendar and the cycles of time. Those were a bit more than I could keep up with. There is s great poem and really nice stories. You can tell their culture was way different than ours.

If you like mythology, this is a great read. You are able to see different aspects of the Mayan Myths. You learn a lot about the different beliefs that were had.

A good book for learning about the Maya beliefs. A lot of hard to pronounce words but informative.

Loved this beautifully written book and lush detail of the life of Botticelli and his muse. Filled with longing and romance, there was a perfect tension described between the various aspects of Simonetta and Sandro's life together and apart.A piece of history which I knew nothing about, but now want to travel to Florence to see 'The Birth of Venus' at the Uffizi Gallery and visit Botticelli and Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci grave at Ognissanti.Highly recommend read if you enjoy history, romance, solid character development and a wonderful story that will leave you thinking of these two lovers long after the last page is finished.

I have always loved the works of Botticelli, and have seen the famous painting of the Birth of Venus in the Uffizi. I was not prepared, however, for the way that Alyssa yanked me into her story and kept me there, so smitten was I that I stayed up far too late in the night to find out what happened to the beautiful Simonetta and her love, Sandro. I will never again be able to look at a Botticelli and not think of this novel. The characters are masterfully wrought, the setting of Florence bright and visual, and the love story is one that will warm your heart

As an Art History major, I always enjoy books about art and artists. And I love historical fiction. This was a pleasant and fast read, but by no means great. The characters and descriptions are not deeply developed, but it is nice way to spend rainy day

This book was entertaining, especially when on vacation in Florence, as I was when I started. You can see the Medici homes and works in the uffizi that are just as the author describes. Unfortunately, I feel like the characters lacked depth (maybe because they are based on limited knowledge about the real people?), and the plot pretty simplistic. This made the book less compelling than it could have been.

I really enjoyed The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence. The writing is very poetic and descriptive without being boring. Simonetta's character is well written. This novel has a nice balance of Drama and Romance. Great summer read. I am definitely looking forward to reading Palambo's other novel.If you are a historical fiction fan like me, I strongly suggest giving this novel a read!

I am guilty of dismissing “Golden Guides” as something for children. However, for a lack of any comprehensive field guides devoted exclusively to North American spiders at an reasonable price, I bought a secondhand copy of Spiders and their Kin (revised and updated 2002 edition). I have to admit this is a nice little guide. Although this is far from offering identifications for species, there is still a lot of great general information here. Identifications are usually limited to the Orders, Suborders, and Families, with a few common and representative species illustrated from most families. Although the book is largely focused on spiders, all orders of arachnids are covered in accounts of a page or two (sometimes more) of basic information. The illustrations, mostly paintings and drawing, are very good.Given the price of this book there is not much to complain about. My one criticism is the focus or coverage of the book. It is not clearly defined but, seems to be heavily slanted to North America, with a comment in the forward stating “The scope of the book is broad enough to make it useful in Europe and on other continents.” The small percentage of the world’s 35,000 (ca. 3,500 North America) species that are illustrated are identified with the genus, species, continent, and size. However, even when spiders that I have seen and photographed appear in the book, I never really know how many similar looking species there might be out there, so I never feel confident with making identifications. Nonetheless, there is a lot of fascinating and useful information here for the price.

This is an informative book about all kinds of spiders and arachnids. The pictures are all realistic drawings. Unfortunately, there is little information about tarantulas. The book claims it has information about keeping spiders as pets, but there is really not any sufficient material on the subject. For tarantulas and tarantula care, I recommend “The Tarantula Keeper’s Guide” by Stanley Schultz. Good book, though. Book is small and will fit in a large pocket or small purse.

First, like all of the Golden Guides, this handy little book is written for beginners -- it introduces the science of spiders in such a way that both enthusiastic kids and interested adults are able to comprehend and appreciate the topic. Even so, it's not the lightest of reading. Here's a sample sentence from the book, picked entirely at random: "Pirate spiders are recognized by the row of strong curved setae on the front margins of the lower segments of the first pair of legs." Do a pop quiz on the next 12 people you see, and ask them what "setae" are.What makes Golden Guides appealing to young people is the attractive illustrative style. As an illustrator and photographer, I've found that hand drawn or painted pictures tend to capture the imagination of young people and put them more at ease with text that may be more challenging. The book's illustrations are accurate, if occasionally not as crisp and detailed as one would like for identification purposes.Another characteristic of Golden Guides is that they are most helpful for identifying a limited - although not small - number of common species. If the specimen in question isn't in the book, you may still be able to find clues as to similar species within the group so that you can go on to track down the bug or fossil or flower or spider in question. Every book has a limit, and with nearly 40,000 spider species identified worldwide, I've yet to see a definitive guide to all of them! By my estimate, this book contains about two hundred spiders and an assortment of mites, tics, and scorpions. Oddly enough, it also includes millipedes and centipedes, which are a different group of arthropods altogether.I've been reading Golden Guides since I was a geeky little nature kid. I still have a full set of them, and whenever I give away a copy to a budding naturalist (of any age), it must be replaced. The books have been around for many years, but that doesn't mean the information is dated. The most recent revision for "Spiders and Their Kin," for example, is 2002. Interestingly, early guides are very collectible and at least one website is devoted to collecting them.All of the Golden Guides are well written, beautifully illustrated, and they make excellent family nature guides. Grab a magnifying glass, a few Golden Guides, and Mom, Dad and the kids are ready to hit the trail!

This is the spider ID book that isn't mid 2 figures or more in cost. The paper (smooth and glossy) and printing (colorful and glossy) tho made in China I do not think are inferior in quality to my 70's/ 80's Golden Guides. I recommend this for a spider ID book.For an excellent companion book on the life of spiders- I recommend "The Tarantula Keepers Guide," by Schultz, the "bible" of keeping tarantulas. An affordable book on every aspect of a spider's long yet fragile life, from birth to injuries and sickness to death.You maybe won't want to smash one ever again.
