About the Author

This has to be one of the most well-made books I've ever come across. It has a high-quality, sewn binding; a nice ribbon bookmark; illustrated boards; a beautiful dust jacket; and glossy, oversized pages that are nice and thick. The fact that they're selling this book for the same price as a normal black-and-white, text-only hardcover blows my mind. It's not even much more than what they charge for trade-size paperbacks these days. That's unreal. I've seen very expensive, limited edition books that aren't half as nice as this thing.If you're a fan of Buffy or comics or just books in general, you're going to love this collection. I plan on picking up the rest of the series as soon as possible.[Note: In the attached images, I had already wrapped the dust jacket in a protective mylar cover, which is why it's so reflective, and the photo with the Locke & Key comic is there just to show how much larger the collection is than a standard comic.]

When I preordered this, I thought it would be a standard trade paperback size collection with hardcover binding. I did not realize that it would be a full-sized library edition. I actually prefer the high-quality durable paper and the larger size of the book! It's not something you'll take to read on a flight or anything, but for a quality home collection this is a great investment.If storage space is a concern, I advise going with the trade paperback editions instead. However, if you want a large, durable hardcover, this is well worth the money.As for the quality of the story, well, if you're looking at this you're probably already a Buffy fan. Suffice it to say, this is the official continuation of the Buffy series, just in a different medium. Whedon's plotting and writing remains intact, and he has been involved in the creative process and selection of all the other writers on the series. It definitely feels authentic as a continuation of the TV series, only without budget and filming scope restrictions. :) It's a bit jarring at first with the time jump betwen the end of Buffy Season 7 and the start of Season 8, but the interim storyline is filled in gradually much the way Whedon's crew did with the tv show when there were season jumps there as well.Very, very good, and I can't wait for the next hardcover to release!

I'm not a huge fan of comics but I love Buffy so much and I really wanted to continue the story. This is a great addition and I'm very happy I bought it. The personalities of all the characters really shine through, and it's so nice to see everyone. I thought the way the show ended was really great, and I was afraid for a long time that it might not be worth it to read the comics (in fear or 'ruining' the story). But I'm really glad I did and I'm looking forward to getting the next book.

If you are a long time Buffy fan and you haven't actually read these Season 8 comics before, like myself, I recommend you pick them up. The collection is excellent and really took me back to the show. It also adds in lots of new stuff, which keeps it all fresh.

I'm in love. I loved Buffy when I was a kid, I was sad when both Buffy and angel ended. I wanted to know more. But I never knew they continued the story in comic form until recently. I've been thinking about getting this book for a while. I finally decided to purchase it and I'm really glad I did. The book itself is very well made. I love the size of it. It makes the art so much prettier! I'm surprised of the price honestly. The writing is similar to the show. The characters stick true to the live action counterparts. I'm so happy and il be buying more of the volumes soon.

When people said the production quality was high, I expected a nice binding and the hardback part. Its the pages themselves - I wouldnt even call them paper! They are thick, very glossy (in a great way) and frankly each page looks more like a movie poster than a comic. These books are a work of art. The volumes themselves, in addition to being bound and covered in an outstanding manner, are simply bigger than a regular comic page - each page is an incredible joy to read. I also did not expect to have some bonus material provided, such as a section at the end featuring all the cover art of the original books (each HC volume covers 10 issues). I cant wait for 3 and 4! I was debating picking them up piecemeal since the HC 3 and HC 4 are a bit aways as i write this, and Season 9 is already underway, but theres no doubt now - I will wait for these collectible treasures, not spend cash on the regular issues.

The BTVS Season 8 hardcover serves as both library piece and potential blunt instrument. The massive tome (almost as large as any ABSOLUTE SANDMAN edition) would easily be at home in the oversize shelf with other art books typically not of the comic book persuasion. Still, for $20 you get your money's worth: fine, sturdy pages of marvelous sheen and lots of extras. my only contention with it is that for a book as physically BIG as this one, I had hoped there would be at least 2 more issues in it. Instead, those issues have been spread over 2 other volumes, probably for additional sales.Still, that's a minor gripe and has nothing to do with the quality of the book itself. It's a worthwhile purchase and I'm convinced that $10 of your money went to making the spine for the darn thing.

If you still miss the show and the characters; Joss continued it in comic form. It is a bit more fanciful than the TV show but the spirit is there. The Library Editions are high quality large format collections of the individual comic runs. The Library Editions have been released a year or two after the initial comic release. They are perfect for new or old fans to catch up or compliment the collector. As of this review 1/2015 they just released the Library Edition Season 9 volume 1.

I'm actually a Forensic Psychologist. My attitude towards the show Criminal Minds has been that the writers were often "unencumbered by facts" in writing each episode. I was shocked to discover that I could get Forensic Psychology continuing education credits for this book so I bought it (We have to get 20 hours of CE credits each year for licensure).The author does a masterful job of navigating a delicate line between respect and criticism. She notes that the show doesn't really show how real profilers work - not big team, no airplane, etc. but she doesn't otherwise provide strong criticism. She does provide concrete information about serial killers and the tracking thereof (hence the approval for CE credits). To my surprise, she notes that many (or maybe most) episodes are actually based on real crimes. Well, she says they get their inspiration from real crimes. She even lists which crimes correspond to which episodes.This was news to me - I thought they made the whole thing up, especially the "psychological reasoning" the team utilizes. OK, maybe they do, but they start with a real crime somewhere.Anyway, if you're a fan, this won't turn you off the show. If you're a skeptic, like me, this will make you appreciate the show more. Everybody wins!And I got Continuing Education credits.

The chapters cover essential information presented in a logical sequence from the history and development to psychological profiling, link analysis and assorted forms of deviant behavior manifestation. Spread over twelve useful and informative chapters, a must for anyone interested in forensic psychology, criminal intent and the study of the criminal mind.

If you're interested in a real life criminal minds type of novel this is it! I love the show and needed some research material for a project I was doing on it. This book had a great amount of research and the author really knew was she was talking about. References the show so you can get a deeper understanding for specific​ topics, and overall it was a very interesting read.

A very interesting book with a lot of information in it. I enjoyed reading it, but it's scary to know people like this exist in our society.

This book is stuffed full of basic protocol and/or techniques for what seems like basically every basic technique you might encounter in an analytical chemistry lab. It also describes various principles, mathematics, and other concepts you might come across in relatively uncomplicated language. It also includes practice problems, which is excellent. There are also sections that I would almost categorize as "tips 'n tricks" to make your overall technique better, such as proper weighing or how to use various volumetric glassware.The thing that I appreciate most about this book is that it doesn't require particularly advanced knowledge to make use of the information (although a basic knowledge of chemistry and the subject you are looking up definitely helps a lot). It's practical and accessible, which is exactly what I want in a reference book for a situation where one doesn't really need to know enough details to deliver a thesis, but enough to get the job done. It's also very useful as a refresher--like a situation where "I know I've done this before, but that was x years ago".

This book is definitely not as technical as I would have hoped. It's not useful at all to me.

This book could not have come at a better time for me. I'm a 43-year old Brooklyn yuppie with one 2.5 year old son and it is getting to be time to fish or cut bait on having a second kid. In discussions with my wife on this question I've articulated a notion that the decision should be based on whether it will make our lives better, not whether it will make our son's life better. I figure that while his life will certainly be different if he has a sibling, it will not necessarily be better or worse and thus the decision should be made from our perspective, not his.Sandler basically proves this correct. By taking us through the data, Sandler reveals that singletons lead perfectly good lives (on average) and any notions to the contrary are stereotypes. Indeed, if anything the data would indicate that they may even be better off than kids with siblings.So this does not solve my problem; Sandler cannot (and does not try) to tell me what is right for my life. I still need to decide whether having more kids would improve my life, and I admit to also thinking about the possible person who might not be if we decide to stop at one. But after reading this book I am totally confident that my existing son will be just fine either way and that I don't have to feel guilty if we don't provide him with a brother or sister.

It took me several years to make a decision about my family size, and I enjoyed reading books like this one along the way. You get a lot of crap when you only have one, and it's easier to make the right decision when you have a chance to see actual data. Most people have kids without even thinking about why they're really doing it or why they're having as many as they do. It's a huge, life-changing decision every time you bring new life into the world! I don't understand *not* taking time to really think about it and question why you're doing it in the first place. I'm glad I paused long enough to question the status quo of "if you have one, you should have two." It's a lifestyle choice. Not so you can have a "tiny adult" or "be selfish" or whatever other nonsense people say. I have one, and I don't want to have more and split up our resources.Also...women are told we can "do it all"... but that's a myth. Something has always gotta give. And it all gets more difficult with each additional child. Women are expected to sacrifice everything (like our careers or childhood dreams) when we start having children, then when our daughters grow up, they're expected to follow in our footsteps and basically do it all over again in order to be "good moms". What's the point of sacrificing so much to raise my daughter so she can "reach her full potential", just so she can give everything up in order to have whatever number of children society deems acceptable and continue the cycle of self-sacrifice? I'm not buying into this. I want to model a different way of living and for me that means doing what I love while also raising *one* child.

The following quote sums up this book nicely for me:"Children are a desire, not a calculation. Which is why I believe that if you truly desire more than one child, you'll make it work. People always have. And if you don't, well, there's a big stack of numbers on your side. If we're going to be rational about it, surely the economic verdict suggests we should stop at one."As another reviewer stated (and also in my own experience), this topic can be controversial, and Sandler doesn't pretend to be objective. Rather she takes a side on the issue, arguing that one child is better for her, better for her child, and better for the environment. Personally, for now, I agree with her. I don't believe that Sandler is trying to dictate that everyone should have one child (based on the quote above), rather I believe she is making a very direct argument to refute the stereotype of only children as lonely, selfish, and maladjusted.I also would have preferred Sandler to write the book more along the lines of "only children are just as good as those with siblings", but I can understand why she didn't. It feels like the stereotype of only children is so entrenched that to prove only children are just as ok as those with siblings, you almost have to prove they are better. Similar to how women in traditional male-dominated careers have often had to be better than men to simply receive the same recognition and advancements.I have had firsthand experience with the ingrained stereotype of only children, from strangers and friends alike. When a friendly stranger asked if I plan to have another child and I said no, she literally told me 3-4 times I would change my mind, I wouldn't want to do that to my child. I also have had people I like and respect imply that to raise my only child not to be selfish; I would simply have to be a better parent than 90% of other parents of only children. While it was meant as a compliment to my parenting skills, it's heartbreaking to have someone I trust suggest that (1) I have put my child at a disadvantage right off the bat and (2) I will have to work harder than everyone else to fix that disadvantage.And that exact heartbreaking feeling is why I can also understand other reviewers' vehement criticisms of Sandler's work, because she directly argues only children are better. None of us like to think that we aren't giving our children the best in every way. As parents of only children, we cringe when others imply we are supposedly "selfishly" withholding the absolute best thing we can do for our child by not providing them a sibling. I can only assume that parents of multiple children cringe when Sandler points out that quantifiable, documented, research has shown time and time again that only children benefit from their parents undivided time and financial resources by scoring higher (albeit only slightly significantly) in areas of achievement, motivation, and personal adjustment. Thus it is likely that this book will continue to either receive high praise or deep scorn from most reviewers.My own personal take-away from this book, is that overall being an only child (or a parent of one) is no better or worse than being in a family with siblings. Each has their own set of challenges, and their own benefits. It is really none of my business to judge anyone else's family size, and I know I have changed my reaction to larger families as my sensitivity has grown. I found this book deeply reassuring as a parent of an only child, and I can only hope my review will raise awareness among those in larger families that only children are just as great as everyone else.*ARC provided by the author for an honest review.

I'm glad I read this book, which was recommended to me by my doctor. She knew we were a bit on the fence for multiple children because I felt guilty having an only child. This book was a weight off my shoulders in relieving any guilt I might have had, as the author pointed out many benefits for both the parents and the singleton to keeping the family with only one child.The book was enlightening and easy to read. It's not to say that having more than one isn't good, but it definitely shows that having only one can be awesome, too. The stereotypes of only-children are flawed, but not only that. Singletons are becoming the norm. In fact, many Gen-Y-ers are planning only one, if any at all, based on the limited research I've read.

Mark Thompson is a scholar and a sailor. He has also been, in his lifetime, a soldier and a legislator. He is an honest, articulate man with a probing mind. He is also a raconteur with a fine sense of humor. Mark brings all this, and more, to his writing.The shipwrecks described in GRAVEYARD OF THE LAKES are, in a sense, the exceptions that prove the rule. That is, for every shipwreck or foundering, there are hundreds if not thousands of successfully completed commercial voyages on the Great Lakes. By describing the wrecks and the tragedies and looking to discern overall patterns, we learn what keeps voyages from becoming wrecks and tragedies -- even if it is only not to let hubris reach critical mass.Mark is no armchair historian.
