Medrich is the author of another beautiful cookbook, Cocolat: Extraordinary Chocolate Desserts (LJ 2/15/91), which showcased the indulgent desserts from her California pastry shops. Her low-fat book is not, as one might expect, at the opposite end of the spectrum; there are rich-tasting, elegant creations here too. Some readers will be disappointed to find that, despite the book's title, not all of the recipes are for chocolate desserts, but many are, and the nonchocolate recipes are just as enticing. It's impossible to cut the fat drastically in some desserts without ruining the taste, and Medrich, rather than compromise on flavor, chose 30 percent calories from fat as her limit-which some readers will find too high for their liking. I can't call myself an expert in any area of the kitchen -- you know, just the Home Ec 101 type. This book was a revelation for me. I have actually made the Simple Chocolate Cake with Dark Chocolate Glaze, Rice Pudding and Lemon-Marbled Cheesecake, all from scratch! It wasn't nearly as hard as I'd thought. And nobody guessed that any of it was low-fat. Although I rarely take the time to write reviews, this kind of unqualified success deserves recognition. If you have always been intimidated by "gourmet" recipes, and if you want to have your lowfat cake and eat it, too-- this book is a must!

I bought this book recently and was initially a little daunted because everything in it look so very gourmet -- it was intimidating to a novice baker. After my first attempt I very was pleasantly surprised -- the recipes are much easier to make than the finished product would have you believe. Chocolate Decadence, what I made, turned out to be absolutely amazing! It has the taste and texture of something rich and sinful you would get in a upscale restaurant, but in fact, it has very little fat and was a ton of fun to make. I definitely plan on trying more of these recipes -- this book is health conscientious, fun, and yummy!

I too fondly remember the Cocolat stores in Berkeley and San Francisco. This book pares down the fat in the recipes without using some of the unpleasant and often weirdly chemical tasting substitutes that so many low fat books use. The instructions are very detailed. I made the chocolate pound cake, it had a very intense chocolate flavor (from cocoa), and if one wants to take more trouble, the layer cake version would be even better.I look forward to trying more of these relatively guilt free desserts.

Great book by a master of chocolate desserts. Although my order was lost by the USPS, the vendor was able to provide an excellent replacement copy.

This is a split review. On the one hand, the book is well researched (despite Patty Hearst's refusal to talk to the author), well written and eminently readable and recounts with great style an era that many of us have forgotten about -- tremendous social unrest, violence, and what could well pass for mass hysteria. On the other, when I finished it my overall reaction was "so what"? The book doesn't really draw any conclusions about the times; it observes and no more. And even though the book and Mr. Toobin (in various post-publication interviews) make it pretty clear that he thinks she knew exactly what she was doing (i.e., she was not a victim of the "Stockholm Syndrome" and did what she did knowingly and willingly), it leaves the reader with a resounding "so what".There is no broader social/political analysis or any sort of analysis of how a wealthy young woman was able, through intelligence and the ability to be highly manipulative, to get away with lots of things that most people could not get away with. As a result, the book seems more like a mildly bad dream than a social history. It also leaves me with questions about why Mr. Toobin wrote the book. Did he think it would make him lots of money (which it surely has) or fame (which he already has)? Did he hope to find a justification for it all? If so, at the risk of becoming a character in his own book, it might have helped to explain why he bothered with it in the first place.I give it five stars for the writing, research and readability but three for "value".

I was 21 when Patty Hearst was kidnapped, and I embraced her story until her commutation. I read everything I could find about it; and was convinced she had been brainwashed as her lawyer claimed. But, through Toobin's exquisite writing, I began to see an entirely different story unfolding. Toobin sticks to the facts; and it is the facts that tell the truth. The book reads like a suspense novel. I couldn't put it down. There is much more I can say, but won''t; because I don't want to be the spoiler. I highly recommend it.

Most people who were around in the mid-1970's will remember the kidnapping of Patty Hearst by a hapless band of revolutionary players, the Symbionese Liberation Army. This group, whose main members were - as Jeffrey Toobin puts it in his new book, "American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst" - as differentiated as a fox-hole in a war-time movie. There was the black revolutionary - "Cinque" or Donald DeFreeze - the white revolutionaries - Emily and William Harris, the gay revolutionaries - Camilla Hall and Patricia Soltysik, and various, other hangers-on. The SLA was a group of urban guerillas, who seemed determined to wreck the system, but were stymied on what to put in it's place.And who was Patricia Hearst? As Toobin describes her, she was the heiress to a fortune but was sort of drifting through life, so far. The daughter of mismatched parents, she was the middle of five daughters, raised by her mother to aim for the conventional wealthy woman's life - marriage to an eligible man and a life raising children of her own. In stark contrast to the free-living members of the SLA, Hearst at 19 was living with a much older man - Steven Weed - in a married-like life, while studying at the Berkeley campus of the University of California. On the night of February 4, 1974, Patricia Hearst was kidnapped from the town house in Berkeley by the SLA and forcibly turned into a "revolutionary" by her kidnappers. Or, did she join in the ensuing mayhem willingly?There began an almost two year spree by the SLA, with Hearst - now called "Tania" - as an active participant. Bank robberies, shootouts, and blackmailing for food distributions to the poor were all part of mid-1970's in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This group - which literally and thankfully couldn't shoot too straight - made headlines. I can still remember where I was when I heard Patricia Hearst had been found and rescued. But what was she rescued from? And what was her role in the SLA's crime spree?Author and attorney Jeffrey Toobin does an excellent job in relating the people, the times, and the effects this rag-tag group - with its "prize" member - had on California and society at large in those years. Hearst has now became the settled society matron her mother had groomed her to be, raising daughters and prize-winning dogs. The others who are still alive are living with various degrees of revolutionary fervor. His book is beautifully written with much less sensationalism than you might expect on the subject.

I have enjoyed her O'Keefe and Austin series. The characters are well developed and her tedious and librarian dedication is evident.

As an adult I have enjoyed L'Engle's books for both young adults and for her books about her own life. "Troubling a Star" is the most recent I've read and hope it will bring more readers to all of her fiction and non-fiction. She makes us think, no matter at what age we become engaged with her variety of titles.

Although the first book in this series was published in 1960, this one was published over 30 years later. The historical references to the Falklands War and the collapse of the Soviet Union implied that while Vicky's family might still have a 60's mindset, she was having modern adventure.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is written for middle school youth and is a combination teen-age love story and political intrigue and deception.

This book was great for my daughter... She said that she really enjoyed reading this book and wishes that there was another

Glad to read more about the Austin family especially Vicky and Adam. L'Engle always does a great story that entertains as well as making you think.

The story behind Mrs. Packard is fascinating, but Mann loses the style about halfway through. The injections of the court interviews become increasingly frequent and don't always blend into the current action of the story. The epilogue at the end of the play comes across as an afterthought and a cop out; I would have appreciated a better way for Mann to end the story rather than through narration a la subtitles.

I was sceptical to read this at first due to it being an assignment for college. However, I found the play to be beautifully written, filled with heartache and pain felt for Mrs. Packard. Definitely will read this again just because it was a captivating story. 5/5!

Like most of Emily Mann's work, the topic is extremely interesting and a good reminder of how far women and mental health have come since the 19th century. The character of Mrs. Packard is compelling.In the reading of the play and the content, I give it a 5.In looking to use it for a cast with less experience, I fear their impulse will be toward a high pitched hysteria.

I loved this book/play it was fantastic. I read it because if the class I’m taking(feminist theory) but I would personally red this book. It is so good really truly understanding androcentrism and the marginalizing women. It is powerful

Intriguing play. I read it before I saw a high school perform it for competition. It is based on historical events of Elizabeth Packard who in 1861 who was without proof of insanity, was committed by her husband to an asylum.

This play is wonderfully written. It grabs your attention and holds it the whole way through. I put it down wanting to know even more about this incredible woman.

I love this play. It is entertaining, gritty, frustrating, and funny. If you are looking for a period piece adapted into a play, this is your text. And it only adds to the appeal that it is a true story.
