The story behind Mrs. Packard is fascinating, but Mann loses the style about halfway through. The injections of the court interviews become increasingly frequent and don't always blend into the current action of the story. The epilogue at the end of the play comes across as an afterthought and a cop out; I would have appreciated a better way for Mann to end the story rather than through narration a la subtitles.

I was sceptical to read this at first due to it being an assignment for college. However, I found the play to be beautifully written, filled with heartache and pain felt for Mrs. Packard. Definitely will read this again just because it was a captivating story. 5/5!

Like most of Emily Mann's work, the topic is extremely interesting and a good reminder of how far women and mental health have come since the 19th century. The character of Mrs. Packard is compelling.In the reading of the play and the content, I give it a 5.In looking to use it for a cast with less experience, I fear their impulse will be toward a high pitched hysteria.

I loved this book/play it was fantastic. I read it because if the class I’m taking(feminist theory) but I would personally red this book. It is so good really truly understanding androcentrism and the marginalizing women. It is powerful

This play is wonderfully written. It grabs your attention and holds it the whole way through. I put it down wanting to know even more about this incredible woman.

Having read "Of Rats and Men" by Goldman, mob lawyer who hates Witsec and thinks those "rats" should not be believed, I wanted to get a different perspective. This book is very intersting, it shows you the hows and the why Witsec was created. Not to mention the who's, such as Shur. It also clears a lot of misconceptions people had, I thought Witsec gave you money forever, it turns out it's only for a while, until you find full-employment. It's not a welfare program.This book also helped me see, in my opinion, what a despicable person Geraldo Rivera was, and to the writer's credit, he did give Geraldo a chance to respond and he did, but as usual, he did not acknowledge the fake, agenda-driven "journalism" he had engaged in. It also helped me understand that Witsec not only protects the bad guys but the good guys as well, the wife and kids of the criminals. In the end, I agree with the author who credits Witsec for destroying the mafia. It's true that before Witsec, people were afraid to testify, now they aren't.

Witsec was the perfect help for the research I needed to do in writing my novel. I think anyone would find it an interesting read. Setting the program up was no simple thing, nor is it a pleasant solution for those who have to enter it (though preferable to death at the hand of their enemies!). Very informative, very interesting, and gives you huge appreciation for how it helps bring criminals to justice by preserving the lives of witnesses.

Witsec is a synopsis, if u will of Gerald Shur's Carrier of 34 years. It 's fun to read. It also gives a brief understanding of how things work between the FBI, Marshalls & DEA. ALSO it gives us the Public an understanding of what US Marshall Service 's all about. I did learn a lot. The book 's well put together with the help of the Journalist Pete Early. The Book 's a Good read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.

Witsec is the most exciting book I've ever read next to Dan Brown's series. Although the names and locations have been changed for protection, this book is the only book I've ever read which speaks about the Witness Protection program ran by the US Marshals Service. This book gives an outstanding history on how Witness Protection was created, the struggles for approval, what they did while the program was fully implemented, and how it's used today. I really enjoyed reading about the stories on how people's live were affected by the Witness Protection Program and how big criminals were and can be taken down and dismantled. For those interested in a career with the US Marshals or the FBI, I would highly recommend reading this book. It's worth every penny.

This may have made a fairly good read as a magazine story.The IDEA was great.The first few chapters were pretty interesting, but later it couldnot hold my interest.Maybe I expected something else. I hate to pan a writer as I knowhow much work it takes to complete a saleable book.

Interesting and easy read. Hard for any start-up, but harder when the largest element is people. Just enough info to give you an inside view without being bogged down in bureaucratic or messy detail. ++

To understand WITSEC as it exists today, you need to know its history. There's no better place to find that than the book co-authored by its founder, Gerald Shur. I read WITSEC as a writer who wanted to portray witness protection as realistically as possible. This book was helpful in that regard, but it was also a fascinating read.

Pete Earley is one of my all time favorite authors. I just started reading this one last night. It's going very fast. It's hard to put down once you start. It's most interesting that Pete Earley collaborated with Shur -- it's really a good thing. So far, anything I've read written by Pete Earley hasn't disappointed me. He writes extrememly well -- gets his point across, etc.

About the Author

Stanley W. Jacob was a professor emeritus of surgery at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He received his MD from Ohio State University and completed his surgical training at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He was a chief resident in surgery at Harvard Surgical Services and an instructor in surgery at Harvard School of Medicine before he was appointed to the faculty at Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Jacob discovered the medicinal properties of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). This discovery led to more than 20,000 publications in such areas as pain, inflammation, scleroderma, interstitial cystitis, arthritis, resistant tuberculosis, cancer, cryobiology, free radicals, stroke, and neuroprotection. Dr. Jacob received many honors during his career and also authored a dozen medical textbooks and more than 170 peer-reviewed articles. Jack C. de la Torre is an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Texas in Austin. He began his work on dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the early 1970s shortly after his appointment as assistant professor in neurosurgery at the University of Chicago. Dr. de la Torre’s research revealed DMSO’s ability to quickly reduce intracranial pressure, restore cerebral blood flow, and stabilize respiration in nonhuman primates sustaining lethal traumatic brain injuries. For the next eight years, he extended his brain trauma findings and showed that intravenous administration of DMSO was effective in treating primary and secondary damage following experimental ischemic stroke and spinal cord trauma. Dr. de la Torre has published more than 180 peer-reviewed research articles and written or edited a dozen medical texts on pathology, neurotransmitters, and Alzheimer’s disease.

A solid summary of recent (and some older) research. Unfortunately the "promise" of DMSO of 40+ years ago has stayed just that as mainstream medicine is not interested in this cheap molecule. Thus the book describes mostly research rather than actual application by doctors. I even have to buy my DMSO from a veterinary supply distributor!

Great book for the patient, physician, or health care professional that wants to read accurate information regarding the use of DMSO for humans.DMSO is a FDA approved drug and has been since 1974. Wow you would not know this with its lack of use for the treatment of strokes, the signs and symptoms of inflammation, arthritis, and pain relief to mention just a few of the major ailments it can easily and safely be used for intravenously.I congratulate the authors for their effort and success in getting this work published.

Wow there is so much to learn. I’m shocked that so very few people are aware of the healing properties of DMSO. Mind blown.

There wasn't enough about my particular problem, but there was a lot of good information about DMSO in treating many problems.

Most of the language used is complex for no reason. For example he says in pg52. "Many of the patients treated with DMSO had been refractory to cortisine and antibiotic creams". Why does he have to use those complex and large sentences all over the place. Makes the book loose credibility. Simplicity is power
