Review

[...] the connection of the senses does work very well poetically, and this text accompanied by the author's stylized illustrations should limber up even the most sluggish imaginations.—Kirkus Reviews"Originally published in 1959, Ms. Borten’s beautiful, vintage artwork adds texture to the basics: lines, color, and shape, whether it’s by adding swirls to an ocean full of fish or wispy, thin spider webs above the thick bars of a lion’s cage. Ms. Borten artwork and evocative text inspires children to see the world around them "as a great big painting, full of lines and shapes and colors, to look at and enjoy". This is a great book to read out loud, then talk about the different sounds and feelings kids associate with them."—Books for Kids"the book is beautiful, the text is lovely—Borten’s technique is to represent sound—or rather the feeling of sound (which is to say, the feeling of the feeling of sound) through language and art."—Biblioklept"Do You Hear What I Hear? is a lovely introduction to sounds and how they intertwine so readily with emotions. Borten’s poetic, appropriately rhythmic text, paired with the playful, energetic, color-soaked illustrations are just perfect for making the abstract nature of music nearly tangible."—Avid Bookshop

Disappointed it didn't come with a dust jacket because it never said it didn't in the description. I wouldn't have bought it if it had states there was no jacket

Borten's classic book is "Do You See What I See?". It is a compelling introduction to lines, shapes and colors that opened the eyes of young readers to graphic art in 1959. This followup, first published in 1960 and reissued now by Flying Eye Books, does the same thing for sound, but of course a picture book isn't the best vehicle for introducing the many and varied aspects of "sound".That said, this book does more, and does it better, than any other early reader I've sampled. While the first book favored drawings over text this book is driven by the text, with the artwork playing a supporting role. And that text is lyrical and compelling. We start with "quiet" and "loud", and then "short" and "long". Delightful examples of each and where they come from and how they can make you feel. So we think about whispers and butterfly wings and ocean waves and a foghorn and a cracking whip. But Borten doesn't stop there and she drives the reader into ever new territory. What makes the sound? Is that "hisss" a snake or a deflating balloon? What is that sound in the house in the middle of the night? And then we turn to rhythm and to music and to symphonies of sound. This is elegant stuff. It isn't poetry with rhyme and meter, but it is such carefully crafted prose that "poetic" is one of the only ways to describe it. The result, (and especially for a young reader or read-to), is that you are captured by the idea of sound, you think about sound in a new and creative way, and you are introduced to fine writing. That is a powerful payoff for a simple picture book. A very happy addition to the family shelf.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Helen Borten's bright illustrations and descriptive text take the reader through a discussion of all sorts of sounds. Everything from the moods they can create to the things they remind us of are mentioned. The loud noises of the city, the quiet of pigeons cooing, and the constant sound of the sea in motion may all be compared by their location and their effect. The similes in the book would be excellent examples to use with students in lessons on descriptive writing. Phrases like "fierce as a lion" and "mysterious as a secret whispered in someone's ear" make a much stronger impression than just saying loud or soft. The poetic nature of Borten's writing also comes through in sentences like, "There are sounds as near and warm as a kiss - or as far off and gray as a fog horn."She also points out that sometimes it is not the sound, but its source that causes a specific reaction in us. For example - a hiss from a snake is scary, the hiss of air leaking from a balloon is not. Besides talking about whether sounds can be long or short, high or low, and loud or soft, Borten also talks about rhythm and pattern. Brass bands, horses' hooves, and drums can all create a rhythm. When many instruments combine their sounds and rhythms together, they become an orchestra. The variety of sounds that are mentioned range from those too soft to hear, like the wings of a butterfly beating, to those that are loud like the noise from a circus. The illustrations are done in the same style as Do You See What I See? with a mix of bright colors, printed patterns, and lines. I love the endpapers with musical notations printed over the shapes of saws, birds, bells, and french horns. The title page images could lead into a great discussion before the book is even begun, because young readers will be curious about the sound waves that are pictured and why they differ from each other.Whether readers are drawn to the book due to its visual appeal, or because they are interested in the subject of sound, they will have an enjoyable experience. Classrooms and school libraries would be wise to add copies of this title since it can be used with so many subjects - science, music, writing, and art, just to name a few. It is to be hoped that more of Helen Borten's classic children's books will be published soon for a new generation of readers to treasure.I received a copy from the publisher for review purposes.

Black Book of Poems by Vincent Hunanyan seems to be a simple read in which the reader can devour the written thoughts in under a half-hour.However, like a fine wine, this book cannot be gulped down, but needs to be savored. The poetic musings are like the wine's bouquet and need to be inhaled and the provocative thoughts need to be swirled around in the mind and the heart. Additionally, the sincere and naked thoughts need to be reread like a connoisseur of wine asking for another refreshing sip.The poems are simple yet deep and express the author's heart-felt reflections on the mundane and sometimes ugly events in life. Once such poem addresses a drunken husband's rage resulting in spousal abuse and confronts the reader with pain experienced and broken promises.Another poem is entitled, "Ode to a Best Friend" and talks about motherhood. This particular poem, for this reviewer, needed to be shared with others.Black Book of Poems by Vincent Hunanyan is not your typical book of poems where flowery speech is penned and enticing words of love and devotion are expressed. It is however, a provocative compilation of simple poems that capture real life situations and perhaps call the reader to contemplation and action.

I'm new to reading poetry but of course I know what traditional poems sound like with rhymes and such. Amazon suggested this book to me bc of my previous (and first ever) poetry book purchase. That book did not have a traditional rhyming format and I enjoyed it bc I didn't feel like it was over my head with veiled innuendos using big words, etc.So when I read the first poem in this book and saw that it was in a more traditional rhyming style I was like, oh no, this is going to be way too intellectual for me and I will never get any of it. Which is the reason why I never took interest in poetry in the past; it was as if someone was writing in a foreign language when I would read those (seemingly) pretentious works. initially I was intimidated having jumped to the conclusion that because these poems had a great deal of rhyming, I was going to be again reading something that was far beyond my level of comprehension. I was wrong. That's not to say the authors work is of a lower caliber just because I was able to get into it. I am not trying to imply that my level of comprehension is equal to his level of skill because that's far from true. His work spoke to me and even though there were those occasional pieces or words that were over my head, there was a down to earth quality to his writings that made me feel I was "allowed" to not get all of it, but yet still "get all of it". Does that make sense to anyone else other than me? Probably not. Lol.Point is, this book really made me enjoy this style of poetry which was one that alluded me til now. The preface of the book was just as valuable as the work inside bc of his explanation of relative perception, etc.I enjoyed the short stories too. I was able to read the whole book in one sitting and that is important to me bc I am unable (unwilling?) to read any book of great length. For some people a book this length would be just an appetizer, for me, it was a 4 course meal.Vincent, you taught me something new today and you gave me food for thought. Thanks very much for sharing. :)

It is very seldom that I purchase a book of poems, and when I do, it’s usually romance. Though when I came across this thing and saw the title, I immediately wanted to read it. Black Book of Poems wasn’t just about a collection of poems written just for the sake of compiling them into a book. The poems actually reminded me of the things we used to analyze during my literature classes. I especially liked the poems Mom Keeps On Crying and Drunken Dad, as both poems talk about the things that are commonly happening in most of the households these days. There were even a couple of short stories at the end of it which are both full of symbolism, and they also reminded me of the things I made a paper about in my lit classes.I believe that the poems are written based on the author’s actual experiences, as there are some poems that obviously has a “personal touch”, otherwise, it is his own perception about things, as well as the things he was able to witness in his daily life. This book could be a material for discussion in classrooms because the topics talked about in the poems are very relatable to the people these days.

Cute first poems of a young and sensitive poet, who uses the power of Art to express his love and loss on a personal level. As you go on reading a portrait of a young man as an Artist arises from the pages, a portrait of a life loving and unpretentious poet. Loved these lines:I think I'm fineI but am suppressing; These feelings, I can't explain. This play I'm in is quite depressing,And acting's never been my trade. Pretentiousness is our foundation,To hide our weaknesses and pain...Hope you will enjoy the black book of poems, as I enjoyed it.

After recently getting into poetry, I came across this book randomly and fell in love. It's a short book but it isn't to be read in a half hour or read in a day. It's meant to be savored and re read over and over again. You can feel the authors emotions come right out of the words you read and sometimes, I felt a little bit of myself in them too. That's exactly what poetry is. "I believe that good poetry resonates with people on a metaphysical level; you can read a poem without quite being able to put into words why you enjoyed it. It could have been the shivers that ran down your spine or the elevating of your heartbeat. Or it made you smile, or even cry; made you feel something." This book really was a good work of art and I'm so glad I ran into it.

Our review in short. The MS Office All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies (8 Books In 1) by Peter Weverka is a great 'quickie' tutorial guidebook for those unfamiliar with microsoft office. And it will definitely cut down on the time-frame involved in the typical learning curve. -- Also, I found it on-sale, used, for less than $2.00, and the price definitely made it worth looking into!Granted, it's trying to cover a lot of ground in one book. But if you're one of those people who have not had the time to become familiar with basicms 2007 office software: word, outlook, powerpoint, excel, access, or publisher, this book is a beginner's, must have! The tips were easy to follow and really helped to give me a basic grasp on the function of the software i was using, so i felt like i was on my way to actually learning more about the product and i didn't walk away frustrated from the task at hand. So, I think this dummies edition was definitely worth it!** However, if you are already more familiar with ms 2007 office software, or are trying to learn more comprehensive, qualitative user tips, this particular edition will not be for you, and so collecting the individualized,single-subject, tutorial 'big-books' for powerpoint, excel, or publisher, and the like, etc., will probably be necessary as they focus on one subject throughout the book for a more complete understanding of the subject that the 8-in-1 type books don't have time to get into in such detail...Overall, though, this book was definitely a sound investment and is absolutely a book that any beginner should have in their MS-user library! Our Grade: C++, or 3.85-Stars!

Being new to any Microsoft Office product, when I purchased Office 2007, I was pretty lost. Microsoft's on-line tutorials were useless, so I purchased Office 2007 for Dummies, thinking I would use it mostly as a reference. It was so well written and easy to understand, I actually read the entire book, and am looking forward to using Publisher and Power Point (I initially purchased Office for Word and Excel). I found working with Office 2007 easy after reading this book, and have had to utilize the book as a reference very minimally. Utilizing the table of contents and index, I can quickly locate what I am looking for. I am sure this book saved me hours of frustration by laying out the concept behind the Office 2007 design, and showing me how to quickly hunt for commands that I know are there (from reading about them in the book). I am sure my learning time was greatly reduced. Great job Peter Werverka!

I bought it, looked at it and saw that it was inadequate for my purposes. For one thing there was too little said about subjects within Office 2007 I needed answered and there was no links set up I could find to move the process along. I cancelled the order and my troubles began.Amazon charged my account the full amount and has not returned the money nor issued a credit. I believe that I'm being taken advantage of by the incomprehensible manner cancellations are handled. I may have to eat the $15.66 I paid and consider it a bitter lesson.

I'm not unfamiliar with Microsoft Office, but had gaps in my knowledge of some of the programs. This books explains everything in a simple, easy to follow language and includes illustrations to make things even easier to understand. I'm back in the job hunting circuit and Excel is almost mandatory for any resume these days. With this book I will be able to add that knowledge to my resume and be more competitive in the search for a new job. Definitely worth the money! And way cheaper than a class.

I love these "Dummies" books and while I didn't find this one near as funny, it was drier than the others I have purchased, I still find it a valuble tool for my school work and just using the applications in Office 2007! If you need an 'a-i-o' for this program I wouldn't hesitate to order this one if I were you. The index is incredible, if you have an issue, its there, or at least it has been for me. I gave it only 4 stars due to the fact it was not as fun to read as the others, and thus I have not read the entire thing yet, and probably never will.

This book cover the Windows Office Suite. It is not intense on any of the programs but gives you a general knowledge of each. If you want to get more in depth you should get a one program only Dummies book or if you want to get real technical get a program bible. But to get a basic knowledge of the 8 programs that make up the suite, this is an excellent choice. Dummies make a good line of books. As a computer support tech, we used these books all the time for a variety of subjects.

enables you to look up thinks that you may not be familiar with. i went from office 2003 to to 2007 and the ribbon (bad microsoft) was giving me fits in trying to find items i used. book is good office 2007 not so much. want to be able to open office docs with 4 letter extensions, just download the 2007 compatibility pack free from you know what.

I had some questions that I wanted answered by this book and I couldn't find them.I had a full chart of accounts set up in Excel for uploading into QuickBooks. Could not find criteria (field lengths, file type, etc.) in order to make it happen.

The Summer Game (Bison Book), by Roger Angell

Review

“This collection of essays takes you into the heart of baseball as it was in the 1960s, conveyed with humor and insight. . . . The key here is that Roger Angell is a stunning writer. He is also in many ways a highly cerebral one and yet utterly down to earth—a writer who can translate the nuances of the game with perfect clarity.”—Tim McCarver, The Wall Street Journal (The Wall Street Journal)“Page for page, The Summer Game contains not only the classiest but also the most resourceful baseball writing I have ever read.”—New York Times Book Review (New York Times Book Review)“Only Angell’s love of language surpasses his passion for baseball. . . . A splendid book.”—Newsweek (Newsweek)“A decade’s worth of meditations and observations . . . searching for the Higher Game, the cosmology behind each pitch, each swing, each ‘shared joy and ridiculous hope’ of summer’s long adventure.”—New York Review of Books (New York Review of Books)"Fans know that Angell, fiction editor for The New Yorker, is one of the heavy hitters of baseball writing. Dating back to 1977 and 1972, respectively, these are two of his finest collections. Essential for public and academic libraries."—Library Journal (Library Journal)

From the Inside Flap

"Page for page, The Summer Game contains not only the classiest but also the most resourceful baseball writing I have ever read."—New York Times Book Review. "A decade’s worth of meditations and observations . . . searching for the Higher Game, the cosmology behind each pitch, each swing, each ‘shared joy and ridiculous hope’ of summer’s long adventure."—New York Review of Books. The Summer Game, Roger Angell’s first book on the sport, changed baseball writing forever. Thoughtful, funny, appreciative of the elegance of the game and the passions invested by players and fans, it goes beyond the usual sports reporter’s beat to examine baseball’s complex place in our American psyche. Between the miseries of the 1962 expansion Mets and a classic 1971 World Series between the Pirates and the Orioles, Angell finds baseball in the 1960s as a game in transition—marked by league expansion, uprooted franchises, the growing hegemony of television, the dominance of pitchers, uneasy relations between players and owners, and mounting competition from other sports for the fans’ dollars. Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Brooks Robinson, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Carl Yastrzemski, Tom Seaver, Jim Palmer, and Casey Stengel are seen here with fresh clarity and pleasure. Here is California baseball in full flower, the once-mighty Yankees in collapse, baseball in French (in Montreal), indoor baseball (at the Astrodome), and sweet spring baseball (in Florida)—as Angell observes, "Always, it seems, there is something more to be discovered about this game."

Roger Angell can paint images with his prose. This collection of essays is an ode to the game he loves. It is filled with insights into the game and the emotions it generates in us and instills itself in generations of families. There are so many wonderful metaphors-too many to mention but I'll pick a few. In describing a slowly emerging 64 Mets team, "Stengel has called on Jerry Hinsley and two other rookie pitchers Bill Wakefield and Ron Locke for spot duty. They have responded with eager gallantry-often of the kind once displayed by Eton sixth-formers taking to the air against Baron von Richthofen."And while watching the 65 World Series after the Twins went up 2-0, he made this observation: "The fans around me were all laughing and hooting,'it's all over now'. I hope he meant the game and not the series. After I had visited the clubhouse and heard sandy Koufax's precise, unapologetic, and totally unruffled analysis of the game, I came away with the curious impression that the Twins with two straight victories, were only slightly behind in the series."And this about my personal baseball idol Willie Mays during a Giant/Dodger division race, "Watching him this year(1971) seeing him drift across a base and then sink into full speed, I noticed all at once how much he resembles a skier in mid turn down some deep pitch of fast powder. NOBODY like him."And then there is the last chapter especially the last page which brought me to chills. Read that chapter and the last page and you will understand Angell's love affair with this game above any other.

A classic, and one of the best baseball books ever written. Every season from the 1960s is covered in an outstanding essay by author Roger Angell. Angell introduces us to players, teams, and some of the on-field strategy that the casual fan never thinks about. He takes you behind the scenes in some cases, but not in a tabloid sort of way. This is about the game as it was played on the field. Angell observes the hapless New York Mets during their infamous 120-loss season (1962), for example. St. Louis catcher Tim McCarver, now a TV analyst, gives Angell (and the reader) insights into his position as it's played on the major league level -- things fans never consider. This was the decade of Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Roberto Clemente, the aging Mickey Mantle and the young Tom Seaver. In short, a wonderful, informative look at the game. One of my favorite books on baseball's colorful history, right alongside Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times.

I loved Angell's comparisons of action on and off the field with other images which are so a propos but very original thoughts. I give this book the highest possible 4-star rating only because I gave 5 to a very few others which moved me slightly more. I am speaking of The Glory of Their Times, Crazy '08, and Boys of Summer. This book is in this same very major league.

When I first read this book more than 25 years ago, it changed my whole view of baseball. A second reading has confirmed that Mr. Angell's gifted writing is a pleasure to read. The stories of the players of my youth are as good as anything I've read. Highly recommended for baseball fans.

Such a fantastic book. It’s so well written that it keeps you engaged the entire way through. I read this on vacation at the beach and was slightly annoyed every time I was forced to pause from it. Great book and I look forward to buying Angell’s Other baseball books!

Pure chance -- and luck -- brought me to Roger Angell's books. I was shopping for baseball titles as gifts, and clicked on Summer Game in the search results. First, I am a literature student, who loves good writing. Second, I am a huge baseball fan. Third, I'm a girl. On the basis of previous reviews, I purchased Summer Game and Five Seasons, for me AND for my step-father. From the very first page I was blown away. Angell's vocabulary is tremendous; his use of metaphor phenomenal. Baseball really is poetry. I've had several eyebrows raised in my direction on the train as I laugh out loud at his descriptions of players, fans, owners, botched plays, you name it. Nothing and nobody escapes his notice. A bonus for me is suspense: most of these essays pre-date my arrival on the planet by a good 5 years, so I'm too young to know the outcome of a particular World Series or playoff round. Within 2 days, I'd ordered the rest of Angell's baseball books on amazon. They will join the complete works section of my collection, which includes Shakespeare and Jane Austen -- to name a few! Don't hesitate to buy these books for yourself, or for a friend. You'll heartily enjoy them!

The best book ever written about big league baseball in the 50's, 60's and 70's. (my era)

Considered a classic and justifiably so, this book is the result of a truly great writer examining the best sport. Like "Ball Four," it's something to be re-read and enjoyed every few years.

I've read the other book on Joe Gallo and, although I feel the book entitled "The Killing of Joey Gallo" by Harvey Aronson to be the best one, I enjoyed, if that's the correct word for such a book, this book authored by Joe Bruno "Crazy Joe Gallo" to be a worthwhile read. Joe Gallo was a thug and a thug's life is usually cut short by an early death or a life in prison. Joey courted danger by daring his enemies to "take him out" and his wish was only to happy to be granted. There isn't as much detail as in Harvey Aronson's book but it is still a worthwhile read and the price is a lot cheaper. I do wish author Joe Bruno's book had some photographs. I understand Umberto's Clam House is now located at a different location and the eatery at the location on the corner of Mulberry and Hester streets where the assassination took place is now a tourist attraction of sorts. Go figure!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Joe Bruno's insightful and informative biography of Joey Gallo. It appears to me that Bruno owns the mob genre because I've read quite a few books by him and each book is a minor classic. "Crazy Joe Gallo: The Mafia's Greatest Hits" was one of the most enjoyable books on Joey Gallo and his brothers I have read and it just could be the best of the lot. Maybe I feel this way because we used to have their jukeboxes and vending machines in our bar in Corona, Queens. Bruno's research on this book is impeccable and his writing style is as professional as you could get. Great job Bruno.http://www.amazon.com/Starlight-Club-Book-ebook/dp/B0098L3LQW/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1442771689&sr=1-1&keywords=the+starlight+club

The phrase "write what you know" has long been taught by writing teachers to their prospective students. However, whenever I read one of Joe Bruno's mob books, I'm always left with the sense that not only does he write what he knows, he goes that extra mile to find out the most he can about his subjects. One gets the sense that Joe has been there and done that and came out much wiser for it. His interest and knowledge of every subject he tackles shows through in every word. And, "Crazy Joe Gallo" is no exception. From the origins of his famous nickname to his bloody end in a Little Italy restaurant the book stays true to its subject and the lifestyle that we all find so fascinating.Say what you will about gangsters, bad guys, black marks on society; only a couple of statements are certain ... we can't get enough of their stories and no one writes them like Joe Bruno.

I remember the Gallos on the news when I was a kid and have followed all the books and documentaries on them and this is the most in depth and informative.

An entertaining read, but i find phrases like "he died of lead poisoning" ( he was shot; lead from bullets...) kind of annoying, and Joe Bruno likes to use such phrases a fair bit. It does make the book a little lighter with a tiny attempt at humour in a very serious situation, but it did wear a bit thin. Other than little gripe, I enjoyed the book

As always I enjoy Joe's humor and the twists and turns of the era make so much more sense after reading this and other of Joe Bruno's book. Thoroughly intriguing how one man's life becomes what it does and why. Highly recommend this and ALL of Joe Bruno's books..

Good book. I'm old enough to remember when Crazy Joe was killed. That was in the days when the Mob was in its heyday

Straight telling of the career and demise of this vicious criminal and killer. Good reading.
