I work here in America but my company is owned by a French company. Earlier last month I was required to travel to France to meet with the upper level executives regarding business matters and my trip was to last two weeks. Instantly after hearing the news, I was in a bind because I had absolutely no previous knowledge of the French language...even the simple commands so I went on Amazon and downloaded this e-book to my kindle. Every night leading up to my trip I spent an hour reading and I was able to finish the entire book in less than a week. The content discussed was focused and concentrated so I was feeling good for my trip. However I never appreciated the book until when I arrived to my first meal in France with the upper level executives alongside my English speaking translator. I was able to take part in a meal with all French speaking partners and I was able to fit right in even while being a foreigner! I can contribute my success and confidence in the French language to this book and also the audio section which I listened to on my flight. To make the most out of this book I highly recommend learning the important phrases which are located in the meat of the book, they became and essential when speaking English was not an option. I also want to mention the etiquette section at the end of the book, it was spot on! I recommend this book to anyone traveling to France or looking for a fun way to learn French. I have since looked into other books since I've been home and no other competitor offers such an easy read and easy way to learn French. My only suggestion is some words are spelled the UK way and not the American way, so when this book becomes a big hit there should be two different versions.

I dream of traveling to France someday and if I get the chance to go, this book will be a big help with the language. There is cultural background of France, and do’s and don’ts of what to do there. The tables in the beginning help describe how to pronounce words correctly. I like learning by sound, and the additional mp3’s that are downloadable are helpful. I’m a beginner to French, yet this book was easy to understand.

I’ve always wanted to learn French, and even took it in high school, but of course forgot almost everything upon graduation. Now I’m in my twenties and I figure the sooner I get serious about learning French, the sooner I can become bilingual, and the sooner I can go on that dream Parisian voyage without getting lost in translation, haha.So I turned to this book for help with phrases and pronunciation, and I’m getting exactly what I hoped for. The nonchalant tone of the author helped me learn more without getting overwhelmed. A lot of language books will simply list the pronunciations of words/letters and it ends up feeling like some sterile rulebook. But a lot of the lessons end with something like “don’t worry, you got this”. It actually helps! There was even some information about the French lifestyle, like taboos and (my favorite) food.The audio that comes with the book is really helpful too. It’s always good to hear the words you’re learning so you can feel fully confident you really understand the pronunciation.SO happy I found this book. My knowledge of the French language has improved, and for that future trip to Paris, now I know to not point at something with my index finger and to never ask for a doggy bag in a restaurant.

I found a lot to love about this book. For an absolute beginner, like myself, there are a couple of very useful features. Firstly, there’s a detailed pronunciation guide, and it tells you more than the sound of the letters. For example, it draws parallels between English sounds and French sounds, and it teaches you tricks for remembering when a letter is silent. If that’s not enough, there’s a link to a free, downloadable French language pack – and if you follow the author on Facebook, he provides additional support with daily words and expressions.This book DOES contain a clickable table of contents. Yay! This makes it super simple to get to the section you want to locate. Since a large portion of the book features phrases you might need in specific situations, the table of contents is invaluable. Can you imagine flipping through the book page by page? I’ve found myself doing this with other Kindle books, and it’s not pleasant. Who knew a table of contents could make me so happy? Ha ha.There’s also a section of the book that teaches you about French etiquette, so you don’t end up looking like a complete tourist while visiting France. I was surprised by a few of the things that were considered to be rude in France, so I am glad they were listed here.The best part of the book, for me, is the phrasebook section. I’m probably not going to master French. I wish I could, but I’m just too busy. I can learn the correct pronunciation and some basic phrases, but I don’t want to learn the entire language. I just want to visit Paris one time before I die and not feel completely clueless. With this book, I can do that. If I need to ask questions about my luggage, I’ll just flip to the luggage section. If I need to visit a pharmacy while in France, I’ll flip to the pharmacy section. If I want to order dessert, there’s a section for that too. So easy!My hubby and I have talked about taking a driving vacation through France. (He grew up in Germany, so he’s braver than me when it comes to driving in a foreign country.) Luckily, there are appropriate sections in this book. They have sections on buying gas, auto breakdowns, and car parts. I hope we don’t ever experience a breakdown in a foreign country but, if we do, we will be prepared.

I have very aggressive bacteria causing periodontal disease and am loosing a lot of my teeth and was wondering about ways to change the bacteria in my oral cavity other than using antiseptics like chlorhexidine to reduce the total bacterial load. I am sure there are lots of people in my situation. It makes a lot of sense to me to change my oral flora just like changing one's intestinal flora. This book is written by someone that has gone way beyond my simple way of thinking and points out that probiotics in general are a major line of defense against invasive organisms of all kind. All of the bodies opening are sites of friendly and unfriendly bacteria that are competing for these sites to colonize. This book is full of research citations with a huge bibliography, being a trained scientist myself I prefer to verify someone else's opinions with outside literature. This book is a must read for anyone dealing with Periodontal disease. Thanks Case Adams for doing the research for me.

It's a nice change of pace to read a health book that routinely sources studies and refrains from pushing products.This provided a lot of insight into the inner workings of my microbial world and various actions I can take to tip the scale in my favor/probiotic favor.

This book is a must-read for anyone who has had dental issues.I used to believe the hype - floss and brush with a flouride-based toothpaste. My teeth have gotten worse over time - despite brushing all the time, using a waterpik 2X/day, flossing once a day, and using a gum stimulator. I probably spent over 1/2 hour a day on my teeth, all in. And my last appointment was no better than any of the others - still had pockets, more sensitivity for my teeth, etc.Anyway, I had a bunch of stains and some film on my teeth (despite all the above), and when my dentist asked what I was doing differently that might cause the staining and film to grow, I mention that I had started taking probiotics from Hyperbiotics a couple months back. That led to a conversation around mouth flora, and he stated that the science was not well-developed yet, so he wouldn't recommend them.Well, this book puts his theory to rest. It's extremely well-researched - the bibliography of studies goes on for 30 pages. And it's all very well-thought out.The gist of this book is that our mouths are full of bacteria. Some is good, some is bad. When there's too much bad bacteria - streptococcus mutans deserves special mention - you get film, tooth decay and other bad stuff. There are also good bacteria - here L. reuteri, streptococcus salivarius and lactobacillus salivarius deserve special mention - these bacteria fight the bad stuff and help preserve oral health. Complicating things a bit further, what we expose our mouths to can harm our good bacteria colonies, or permit "bad" bacteria to grow unchecked. So fluoride toothpaste kills good and bad bacteria, as do antibiotics (including those consumed when we eat non-organic meat), alcohol, etc.Long story short - I've implemented many of the recommendations in this book, and I have noticed a suddent improvement in my teeth - they are whiter, my tongue isn't coated, I don't have a film over my teeth, my gums feel better. There's nothing to complain about. I found a probiotic lozange containing the "good" strains of bacteria, and almost immediately my mouth changed. I stopped brushing with fluoride toothpaste - Amazon has some good, non-fluoridated Neem toothpaste that works better than anything I've ever used, and my teeth feel smooth. Also, the sensitivity is gone - mind you, I was already using "Sensodyme," so I was pleasently surprised by the results.If you have $5 to spend (for an electronic version), this book is well worth getting. I refer back to it all the time - and it's really changed how I view my body and the world around me.FOLLOW-UP: November 18, 2014So I had a nice visit at the dentist's last week. The shortest visit I can ever remember having - there was nothing for the hygienist to do - she sort of made a half-hearted effort and then called the dentist. The dentist, who usually spends his time chastising me for not brushing and flossing, sort of poked around, said nothing, and sent me on my way. Previous dental visits were about 1.5 hours long, or longer - this took all of 30 minutes, and that counts wait time prior to seeing anyone.Did the dentist rave about my teeth? No, he said nothing. But my last visit he groused about stains, (alleged) poor brushing and flossing, despite me using the fluoride toothpaste he recommended, flossing 2X/day, using a water pik, etc. This time he said zilch, nada, nothing, and I was in and out in record time, and to be honest, I'm spending less time brushing and flossing than before. That says a lot in and of itself.To be clear, I've changed a lot about my oral care - I use Theraneem tooth powder Theraneem Neem Tooth & Gum Powder, cinnamon, 40g, followed by Coral toothpaste Coral White Toothpaste Mint Flavor 6 oz, and before bed I suck on a probiotic lozenge Dr. David Williams' Probiotic Advantage Oral Sinus, 50 Lozenges (50-Day Supply). Given the results, I don't plan on changing anything.At the end of the day, every morning I wake up and there's no coat on my tongue. My teeth feel slippery-fresh, and they're whiter than they have been in years (and still improving). Who am I to argue with success?I can say that reading Adams' book pointed me the right direction - and my last dentist visit is proof of success, at least in my case.

I liked this book because it explained why my root canals are continually getting infected. I took this to my dentist.

Excellent resource for anyone interested in understanding how their microbiome functions. I highly recommend it, not just for dental issues, but for the whole body.

I enjoyed reading this book for many reasons! First, it's simple to understand, it has a lot of research studies to back up the information on benefits of different stains of probiotics. It informs us of many different types of probiotic supplements and types of probiotic foods to eat and how to use them.The one thing that I disagree with is the author suggests becoming vegetarians. It was a very small part of the book and it doesn't bother me enough to take away one of the five stars. I eat healthy and lots of organic veggies and high quality meats... Variety is good.It was a quick read and very cheap price for the kindle version!Very enlightening information that I immediately put to use and will not forget!

Since I belong to a group of wonderful people that are making hats for charity, I am always looking for new patterns and a way to keep the patterns all in one place. I saw several hats in the book I look forward to trying them soon. If they don't work out, I will come back here and change my review to fewer stars. Easy patterns to follow with instructions to help! Almost all have a picture to go with it to help know what your finished product will look like upon completion.

I like this book as it saves me from having to search the net for them. These are a nice collection, and it does take time to find these online (especially the free ones); so, I would say that it is well worth the small price. I've not completely reviewed all of the patterns yet so I'll get back to this evaluation if/when I complete that task.

Lots of hats to consider however, I don't think they are that easy for a beginner. Most of the patterns have a lot of details to follow which a be intimidating. I will make the attempt to try a few of them. Yes, I would recommend the book to others.

Gr8 tips throughout book. Picture accompanies each pattern. Easy to understand and visualize work. Must read each hat pattern for tips on each but good for future workings

Thank goodness it is only 99 cents. I was hoping for a lot more than just a lot of beanies with a few minor changes here and there.

I usually spend tv time crocheting chemo caps, and it was enjoyable having some different patters. I am glad I could keep the instructions on the computer- without having to keep any of the Kindles on. Thanks Ms. Emily.....eill be using the Bunny cap soon for little ones.

I found this book to be an interesting and informative read. While I am interested in linguistics (and thus was probably a bit more excited about the topic than the average person), I think this book would also be enjoyable for anyone. Pinker writes in an understandable manner, mostly avoiding linguistic jargon and always explaining complex topics in a generally understandable way.Additionally, the latest edition includes a "P.S." addition at the end that incudes Q&A with Pinker as well as a summary for each chapter of new advances that have been made since the book was originally written--a nice addition to an already great book.

This is a review of the 2010 Kindle edition of the book published by HarperCollins e-books. Without a doubt Pinker has written a five-star book that is both eye-opening and enjoyable. Out of appreciation to the author, I deducted only one star for errors in the Kindle edition. Since Pinker's book was originally published back in 1994, and by a different publisher, it seems conceivable that HarperCollins did not have a digital text and had to resort to scanning with OCR or some kind of not completely successful conversion process. How else to explain errors like those below? (Not a complete list, but what I thought to highlight as I read through.)• that had seemed passé concern with topics (“that had seemed passé; concern with topics”)• opiuminduced “(opium-induced”)• painti (not i on the end, but subscript 1)• S -> then S (apparently this should be “S -> if S then S”)• mittengrabben. 1st (“mittengrabben. Ist” [letter i, not number 1])• put xin the (“put x in the”)• @@@ (no telling what this should be, but previously it appears as “m” with an acute accent)• big nourish things (“big nounish things”)• Astem (surely Pinker wrote “A-stem” or subscripted “stem”)• Astemaffix (as above)• fell to thinking, and chunk. (“fell to thinking, and thunk.”)• out-Sally-Bided Sally Ride (“out-Sally-Rided Sally Ride”)• VP -> VNP(PP) (“VP -> V NP (PP)”)• Steven Tinker’s (even the author’s name is not immune)• King Ethelbuld (“King Ethelbald”)• a sad and urgent more. (“a sad and urgent note.”)• A1 Galaburda (“Al Galaburda” [letter L, not number 1])• and would not into nothing (“and would rot into nothing”)• something in he world (“something in the world”)• analyze the verb to broadcasts (“analyze the verb to broadcast as”)• No one would say give In break (“No one would say give I a break” [with the words after "say" in italics])• person off gender (“person of gender”)• trout is a kind offish and (“trout is a kind of fish and”)• about twelves times as large (“about twelve times as large”)In a book with many playful and unusual examples of language, one can’t tell, since the e-book can’t be trusted, whether expressions like “isa” or “American Slurvian” are what Pinker intended, or simply more examples of poor editing. On the positive side, the publisher has evidently cleaned up the Kindle version to some extent, judging from the details in someone else’s 2011 review. Given Amazon’s ability to reach into my Kindle and swap files, I am hoping to find a corrected version of Pinker’s book there soon.

This is not a review of the book itself, just a warning for anyone thinking of getting the Kindle edition.The people who published this for Kindle should be ashamed of themselves for selling this product with a straight face.As Kindle books are often scanned from printed versions, I'v grown accustomed to seeing the occasional mis-scanned word, as they are usually sparse and don't distract from the content.This book, however, contains hundreds of mis-scans. I'm talking about a few every page (some pages might contain up to 10 errors). And these are errors that routinely distract from the content of the book, as the errors will sometime spell a different word altogether, giving a sentence a completely different meaning that you will only realize is nonsensical after reading an entire paragraph.Plus, 2 times out of ten, the combination of letters "th" will be scanned as "di". As you must realize, die difficulty of reading dirough paragraphs full of diese errors, in die kindle version of diis book, dioroughly distracts from the enjoyment of die material.

Well, not exactly a revision. There is a new “P.S.” section at the end: a little autobiography, how the book was written, some Frequently Asked Questions, Suggested Reading, lots of new references, and “some reflections on the contents of each chapter in the light of developments since 1994.”The latter is pretty slight. If the typeface were the same size as the text, it would probably cover 15 pages. I can think of three reasons for the shortness:1. Pinker thinks he was right about most everything in 1994 and doesn’t feel the need to change much.2. He has updated and elaborated numerous things in two later language books, Words and Rules: The Ingredients Of Language and The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature, to which he liberally refers. He notes that the last chapter “Mind Design” begat How the Mind Works and The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature. It is obvious that his most recent, The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century, had beginnings in chapter 12, “The Language Mavens.”3. He is a very busy man and did not want to take the time necessary for a thorough update.I suspect all three are partially true. I was disappointed by how often I asked, "Has no recent research been done on ______ or is Pinker just not writing about it?" Which I suppose is a compliment about how interesting Pinker makes language research. Still, the P.S. definitely adds value. It is worth getting this edition.

Beautiful book. It also serves well with my ambitions of NPL and AI. I believe all Computer scientists should read this book along with linguists as it builds on the logic of the language process and how the mind will work on the techniques of producing language. I kept this structure in the back of my head as I questioned how humans have been communicating with language. Pinker definitely is an entertaining and thorough author.

This map is presented as a travel map for 3 states..however, the 2 primary states ( Idaho and Montana) are placed on different sides of the map...thus not practical or usable as effective for multi-state travel planning. Buy a different map.

This is a book featuring the amazing poster art of 20th century Chinese advertising (and, sometimes, propaganda) posters. Not really a history of the genre and not really what one expects in an art book. My main gripe is that it is only 4" X 8" in size; unusually tiny for a primarily graphic book. There is no information regarding the dates of the specific posters. Many of the images have been cropped; full images of the posters would have been preferable. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Bought this book at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum souvenir shop years ago, and absolutely love it!!The posters and ads in this book are stunningly beautiful, and there is a good explanation about the cultural and historical background as to how these posters begin to appear, what they were used for, the artists' focal point when creating these posters, etc.I love it so much and never regretted buying it. It was definetely money well spent.
