I love New Mexico and anything I can read about it's history is fascinating to me.

Excellent book on ghost towns. Mr. Looney goes into more detail about the history than other books on ghost towns.

This is a well researched book with lots of pictures and information not found in many books. I found it of particular interest because of the inclusion of, not only Shakespeare, but also Steins and Valedon, or, as we knew it "The Old 85". These were places where my brother, sisters, and I explored during formative years of our lives while our Father was stationed at the POW camp near Lordsburg, and reminisced about in our book "Outside the Fence: Stories of an Army Officer's Kids and WWW POW Camps". This book was a pleasant revisiting of places we loved.This book provides nice glimpses into New Mexico's rich heritage.Marilyn Snethen Clark

For anyone who loves New Mexico, this book is a real treat. It has the interesting history of the Ghost towns and near ghost towns that I found very informative. It was fun to read. This book is now out of print so get yours while some are still available. I wish I had this book when I was visiting many of the sites mentioned in the book.

In His Own Words... "Children's book authors have to be among the luckiest people in the world. Not only am I paid to do what I love most, but I get to do it without having to grow up. More accurately, the seven-year-old I Hudson is no longer relegated to an ever-receding file in the memory bank hut is once again out-front, fully engaged, sometimes even calling the shots in an active collaboration with Lis adult counterpart. "I'll always be grateful for the solid, all-American upbringing I was given in the suburbs of Louisville, Kentucky, but going to school in Rome was a revelation for me. After graduating from Tyler School of Art in Rome, I extended my education by wandering through Europe, settling in Amsterdam for a few years, and then moving to Hong Kong, where I dabbled in the fashion industry. My travels eventually continued through Southeast Asia and culminated with four magical months in Bali. I finally reached New York, fulfilling a childhood ambition, in 1974. Although my original intent was to become a painter, the free-lance illustration work I picked tip to support myself soon predominated as my primary art form. Pursuing my vision in this direction eventually led to writing and illustrating children's books. I had always told stories with pictures. I began to paint with words. "My series of picture books on the Arthurian legends represents the most ambitious and challenging opportunity that I've ever accepted. Called the central myth of Western civilization by philosopher Joseph Campbell, the Arthurian legends have been evolving over a 1,500 year period, along the way gathering tip and expressing our concepts of love, honor, and courage. Only within the last century have they taken the form of adventure novels for younger readers, and I know of no other attempt to compile the entire cycle into a series of picture books until now. The sheer scale of the material-the vast array of characters and the complexity of their relationships-is beyond Dickens or even "Days of Our Lives." "The curious occurrence that I've experienced as I've delved deeper through the layers of allegory in my research is that as the underlying truth is revealed to me, I'm not only learning something new about the fine art of storytelling but usually something about myself as well. The first three books, for example, are about Arthur coming into his greatness. In the first book it is thrust upon him by accident of his birth, and in the second he achieves it through his own actions. Finally, in the third, he comes to realize the greatness inherent within himself, as it is within all of us. It is the kind of greatness that finds expression when we finally accept ourselves and embrace the roles open to us in lifewhether it is that of king, gardener, parent, or children's book author. "My gratitude is boundless for all those who have Supported my creative progress and believed in me long before I believed in myself. By recognizing that writing and illustrating books for young readers is, in fact, my calling, I can serve a greater purpose than fulfilling my own needs. My children love the stories of King Arthur, Camelot, and his Knights. Hudson Talbott's writing and the gorgeous illustrations which accompany each story are remarkable. His "Tales of King Arthur" stories have quickly become story time favorites at our home. My son has asked to use the illustrations in these stories as a basis to reprint his room, so that it looks "like Camelot and Avalon look".If you like King Arthur, and want to see those legends told in a truly remarkable way, you need to get the three "Tales of King Arthur" books (King Arthur and the Round Table, Excalibur, and The Sword in the Stone), as well as the accompanying book, "Lancelot".

Each of the books in this collection by Hudson Talbott is excellent. My 5 year old son developed an interest in knights after a visit to Medieval Times. From there, he discovered King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Of the many books we have on this topic, there are the best written. The illustrations are wonderful. I highly recommend the entire collection.

I'm honestly very surprised to see that there are (at the time of this review) no other recommendations written for this wonderful book, as that usually means that people aren't compelled to write about it - or haven't had the chance to get hold of it. Hudson Talbott's King Arthur series (beginning with "The Sword in the Stone" and continuing on with "Excalibur") are excellent introductions for the younger reader to the legends of King Arthur and the dense mythology that surrounds him.Though it may be a tad complicated for younger readers, with the subtleties of romance and the strategies of war explored in reasonable detail, it is still great Arthurian reading for the older ones, especially in Talbott's touching insecurity of Arthur as he struggles to lead men who: "have *grandsons* older than me!" Talbott's early Arthur is a delight - nervous, love-struck, inexperienced, and yet brave, determined, fiery in battle and devoted to his cause. Often authors downplay either Arthur's strengths or his weaknesses, but Talbott finds the perfect balance between the two, and as such presents the quintessential Arthur."King Arthur and the Round Table" chronicles several crucial events in the young king's life - his skirmishes with rebel kings that reject his claim to the throne, his fateful meeting with his future queen Guinevere, and the founding of Camelot and the Round Table. It is obviously the middle-installment of a trilogy as it neither begins anything nor resolves anything, yet it is gloriously illustrated and loyally told - though with a few original flourishes of Talbott's own.At a stage when most authors are attempting to find increasingly "new" takes on the Arthurian stories, Talbott is refreshingly traditionalist in his portrayal of people and places; presenting it all through rose-coloured glasses as a fully romanticised Golden Age of the medieval era. Everyone here is as you'd expect them to be, from Merlin in his purple robes and conical hat to Arthur himself; a heroic vision in gold and red, with a white steed and shining sword - every little boy's dream of medieval magnificence. Likewise it's easy to see why Arthur was so immediately smitten with golden-haired, sweet-faced Guinevere. The Round Table is the perfect vision of unity and mystery, and as for Camelot itself...it's simply glorious, as captured by Talbott in the evening light.Only battle is appropriately portrayed as bloody and tragic, with darkened (through exciting) scenes of combat and sieges, resulting in a gory scene of the post-battlefield. This however is perhaps Talbott's most beautiful picture, considering the vision of Guinevere aiding the wounded by the lakeshore, watched from afar by Arthur. It is a heartbreakingly poignant scene if one is aware of their future together, and though their meeting is an original creation by Talbott, it feels so *right* in both its innocence and foreshadowing.I mentioned before that other authors are going to increasing lengths to create new ways of telling the Arthurian stories, and one that often pops up is the conflict between Christianity and Paganism. Talbott has an answer for this too; in another of his gorgeous two-page vistas we see the marriage of Arthur and Guinevere, awash in golden light and flanked by a Catholic priest with a crucifix and Merlin with an oak branch. It is stunning scene of hope and peace, where differing religions, genders and kingdoms are presumed to be in harmony, not conflict.The more I discuss it the more I realise that this is a simply gorgeous book, and must-have for any young Arthurian fan.

This is a good resource. I use it for a vocabulary center. At first I was a little taken aback by how difficult the material was, but the rigor must be upped with common core! With some guidance, this is completely do-able by a 4th grader. My hope is that after a few times I will be able to release the responsibility to them.The best part of this book is that the words are used in context over and over again, and the words are also presented with more than one meaning. By the end of a unit, students really understand their words. I only wish it had more units. It has 10 units, which will probably last us about a third of the year. I wish it were a full year's work.

Absolutely love this book. I have since purchased 3 other grade levels in this series. Each unit contains such great activities, touching upon vocabulary development, word roots, homonyms, dictionary skills, associations, creative writing, and prefix and suffix meanings. The text passages are appropriate and interesting to my students. Love!

This is the first book of John Muir that I have read. I’ve read other naturalists/environmentalists, such as Henry David Thoreau, Joseph Wood Krutch, and Edward Abbey, but it seems that Muir is in a class of his own. I was stunned by his erudition. He knew the names of the animals, plants and rock formations in an area that he had never been before, including passing through several climatic zones, as he climbed in elevation. (I had to keep recalling that he was not carrying a guidebook, replete with full-color pictures of the plants he was observing.) His writing is infused with a deep reverence for the natural world… even a beautiful infectious unbridled enthusiasm to “do it all,” to savor as much as one possibly can of the natural world. I first became acquainted with his name more than 25 years ago, when I visited the magnificent redwoods that bear his name, just north of San Francisco. Tis a pity it took so long to read his actual words.Muir “hitched a ride,” that is, seized an opportunity and joined in the “old-fashioned” practice of transhumance. “Old-fashioned,” in that it is a practice in decline, defeated by the primacy of fences and “property rights.” But the practice of moving livestock to better grazing, in particular to higher elevations in the summer, has existed for thousands of years. In June 1869, he joined 2500 sheep, as they moved from the Merced valley in central California, and walked with them into the high Sierra Mountains, in the area of current day Yosemite National Park, and returned to the lowlands by the equinox. He did not have required duties – a professional shepherd, along with assistants – handled the “grunt work.” Three magnificent months to observe a country that had just been opened to exploration by the white man largely in the last two decades, thanks to the ’49 “Gold Rush.” Three months of living outside, largely without shelter, and “reading” only the natural world.I found his writing to be dense, like a fine chocolate bar, and could rarely read more than 15 pages at a time without taking a break to think about his observations. In one section, he contemplates the many different paths raindrops take. In another, he examines the lives of three very different creatures: the bear, the grasshopper and the common housefly. For sure, he provides anthropomorphic characterizations. He has a keen geological “eye,” spotting signs of glacial action in prior times. Clearly his heart lies in the very high country of the Sierra, around Lake Tenaya. Somehow he knew about a flower called the cassiope bell, searched for it, and found it in profusion. It is wonderful nowadays to be able to see a picture of it on the internet, and understand immediately his enthusiasm. In yet another section, he relates his “telepathic” knowledge that his college teacher, Professor Butler, had just arrived in Yosemite.Muir does not like the sheep he has had to travel with, comparing them to locust, and at one point saying that he would rather herd wolves. He is also rather critical of the various Indian hunting groups that he encounters, always critical of their dirtiness. In general, he repeatedly praises the cleanliness of the natural world, but seems to be oblivious to the dirtiness of the sheep that are his companions.In the high country it is approximately two months of intense life between the melting of the snows and the arrival of the next frosts. On August 10, he says: “Another of those charming exhilarating days that make the blood dance and excite nerve currents that render one unwearable and well-nigh immortal.” In another section, he says of Yosemite’s cathedral: “Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fibre thrilling like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells and leaves. No wonder the hills and groves were God’s first temples, and the more they are cut down and hewn into cathedrals and churches, the farther off and dimmer seems the Lord himself. The same may be said of stone temples.”Yes, at times his exuberance can be “over the top.” So be it, for it seems that he can see deeper than us average mortals. 5-stars.

I bought this because I was tired of checking it out from my Library. The Book is wonderful and everyone with a love for the outdoors or just good writing should read it.It's this printing I have a problem with. The size of the book is awkward, and completely unnecessarily so because the blank margin space is huge. The print is big too, but it's also fuzzy and hard to read. Lots of wasted thick paper here (which will only make you feel guilty as you read about the beauty of the trees). All in all this feels similar to reading an instructional manual that was printed on a poorly calibrated home printer. There are other copies of this book available, I would recommend choosing one of them.

First Summer in the Sierra was a delight to read. John Muir's diary is fascinating due to his capacity of describing the different landscapes along his route as one of the shepherds tending a big flock of sheeps the Yosemite River Valley and the High Sierra. To the accuracy of the geographical description he adds its evolution, its changes in flora and fauna distribution, the rythm of days and seasons, the variations in the color and the clouds. All this, added to his spiritual response, told in a poetic manner. His sketches, and the latter added photographs, are enriching in spite of the fact that I read the book in its Kindle edition.

Bought this for my newly retired dad who finally has time to read now. HeLoves the outdoors and they visit national parks on the regular. He’s about half way through and loves the story.

I purchased the Gibbs Smith Hardcover because of it's awesome artwork, however like the person that posted the photo review my copy was marked up and smudged on the cover. I ordered a replacement thinking I must have just received a returned one, but the replacement was even worse. So buyer beware, if you order the Gibbs Smith Version you might receive a messed up cover.

I first read this book in the '60s after I had already visited Yosemite. This new edition is a very nice piece of work, and it is really a great introduction to John Muir. For one who has traveled extensively in Yosemite territory it is a pleasure to see that country through Muir's eyes 100 or more years earlier.

I have always wanted to read Muir. This style of writing is not for everyone - Muir goes to great lengths to use his senses to describe everything he encounters. I found those descriptions enlightening, detailed, and exhilarating. Some might find it monotonous, and I would understand that.

It is a no-brainer for me to recommend this book as I love John Muir and live in the Sierra foothills close to all the places described. Having hiked some of the well marked trails on the John Muir trail it is amazing to think that he “trail blazed” without all the information and guidebooks available to us today. The book arrived as promised and service was excellent.

This book is really great. My kids (11, 9, 7, 5) have been pouring over it and asking questions ever since it arrived. The content has a clean layout with no distractions, which kids appreciate, even if they don't understand why. I expected my kids to enjoy seeing the pictures and hoped they would eventually learn to see passed the toys and into the underlying highlights of this book. It happened sooner than I expected. We were in deep by the time we got finished looking at it the first time, with this book serving as a springboard into subjects that run deeper than toy collections. Out of all the beautiful children featured in this book the one that really stole our hearts was Chiwa (Page 94). I recommend it to anyone who's looking for an easy way to open up a dialog with kids of all ages about the economics and social realities of other countries.

This concept is simple--photographs of children from all over the world with their favorite toys, no text beyond the child's first name, age and location. But there is much to see when you study and think about the photos. My 2 yr old granddaughter is fascinated, and so is every other family member who's seen Toy Stories. Highly recommended.
