Judd Winick has truly created a delightful superhero story with his HiLo series. After hearing him speak at a conference I can easily see where these stories come from, the man is a natural storyteller. In this third volume of what promises to be a six book series (per the author), HiLo and D.J. have to find a way to follow Gina into a portal. The story opens with them facing off with the U.S. Army. At first I thought that HiLo would be forced to destroy the tanks and everything, but he comes up with a much more effective, not to mention, less damaging, method of disarming the the military establishment (and no I'm not going to tell you what it is, go find the book if you want to know ;)). Once they find a portal, HiLo and D.J. find themselves on an unknown planet with no idea how to find Gina, especially once HiLo collapses. Thankfully they get rescued by a familiar face and taken to a safe place. Along the way, HiLo continues to struggle to remember how he went from being a villain to being a hero. And of course there is a tribe of machine/weapon wielding warriors that have to be defeated as well. With a great mix of humor and action, Winick has created a winning series for both young and old. Highly recommended.

Judd Winick is amazing! This latest installment of the Hilo series has it all -- adventure, pathos, friendship, and great comic timing. My son absolutely adores it. Mom and Dad adore it because our son will read this independently, over and over again. He was so upset that he has to wait until January for the next installment. Thank you, Mr. Winick. This is a WINNER (no pun intended)!!!!

My second grader has now read all three Hilo books over and over again and is anticipating the fourth! This is coming from a boy who declared a few months ago that he didn’t like reading. Well done Judd Winick! Thanks to your wonderful writing and fantastic illustrations, you’ve helped inspire a new generation of readers!

Saw these at Costco and almost bought them but then found it cheaper on amazon. My son and husband read these together every night and they love HiLo now. It's more a 'graphic novel' aka comic book style but great for early readers, my son can read a lot of it and he's in 1st grade.

My kids asked that we pre-order this book as soon as they finished book 2. They both started reading it as soon as the package arrived in the mail. And they didn't stop until it was done. They love these stories and they talk about them all the time.

I bought all the Hilo books for my fifth grade classroom. The kids LOVE them! They fight over who gets to read them next!

My son literally was counting down the days until the release date He loved the first two and was super excited to see there was a third one coming out.. He then devoured it that evening it arrived. He is 6. I feel like the humor is right on point. No meanness or sarcasm. Heard lot of giggles and laughter as his younger sister sat next to him looking on. So cute...and so much better than them looking at a tablet together!

My boys (age 5 & 7) looooove the Hilo serious. They have been reading these books over and over and over again.

Lianna's story is full of conflict on every level. Her relationship with her father is one of great love and yet great need as well. Her captor is filled with blackness, hatred, the very definition of evil. Yet even he has reasons, justifications, for his actions. To say this story is complicated would be an understatement. Yet in the end, Jennifer Bene has scored another winner by showing us the intricate complexity of humanity. All of us have light and dark in our souls. This story highlights that no one is totally innocent, nor is anyone totally evil. I love how the dark and light play off each other, slowly growing, changing, coalescing into something far beyond what you could expect from any of these characters. Ms. Bene has again shown her brilliance in this genre. I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end. It more than deserves five stars. Thank you, Ms. Bene, for yet another deliciously dark and convincing story showing us just what being human is all about.One final note. Please be an informed reader and consumer! This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language and some extremely dark, nonconsensual sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy this genre, think hard before buying any book you know you won't enjoy. If you've ever read one of Jennifer Bene's books, you know she can take your breath away with her darkness and Destruction is no exception! What I loved about Destruction was how much of a psychological thriller it was. I love me some dark, but mix it with a mind *beep* and I was on the edge of my seat. The other great thing about book is you can really connect with the 2 main characters. The character development in this book is amazing! I felt Lianna's anger and sorrow during her captivity and I felt David's rage and frustration with Lianna and her father. This book is brilliantly written and will keep you captivated until the very last word!

First, make sure you understand that dark romance is just that before you buy this book and then complain that it is a dark romance with elements of revenge, violence, and nonconsensual acts. That and more is in this book. If that is not what you like to read, then DON'T read it. Simple concept.Personally, I am most intrigued when reading a book by Jennifer Bene of how her mind thinks- where do these characters live in her head? I find her writing to be page turning, intriguing, thought provoking, shocking, and sometimes even a bit heart tugging.Enough of that and on to the book. David has reasons from his childhood and into adulthood to hate Lianna's dad. Reasons that he believes allow him the right to do whatever despicable thing he can think of to hurt her father to the depth of his soul--to tear out his soul if possible. David is willing to sacrifice himself to achieve his ultimate revenge. He sees the pawn in the game being Lianna.Lianna works for her father. She is well-educated, has an intense work ethic, and believes she owes it to her father to be a worthwhile heir to his empire he has created. She is often disappointed that her father seems to love his business more than her, but she never gives up hope that someday he will see her true value.David targets Lianna and captures her. He is not kind, not gentle, and doesn't ask permission. He takes, he hurts, and he tries to destroy everything she is and everything she stands for. She surprises him with her strength, her innocence, her refusal to crumble and be his victim.You need to read this story because there is much more to it than I have shared and the character development alone is a gift Ms. Bene shines with.There is no cliffhanger even though there is another book about the couple coming out. This story does end with a HFN at least.I received this as an Advanced Reader Copy and voluntarily reviewed it but liked it so much I decided to purchase the book for my own kindle collection.

This is the second book in the series that I have read. This author is so good. The story is so tight, the flow of the action and the characters in the event is spot-on. And at the very end I was surprised and amazed and so clear set this was a righteous in me.I am a character and relationship person. These stories are built on these factors. And I am a Detroit girl. Only left home after college. Have such great memories of that City before the big trouble. This writer brings me back to Detroit, great things I remember and the sense of its New Life in these days.The mix of crime and neighborhood and government agencies and some of the worst aspects of Michigan come together in a great story.And the writing is damn good. But maybe I said that already.

As an old Detroiter, I found Mr. Jones' descriptions of the lower West side engrossing and poignant and mostly accurate. His characters real and realistic. His treatment of the old north side and the Edison Park district are also captivatng. My wife's family loved there. He has room in whatever the rubber issue will be to spend a lot more time on the East side. My cousin who lives in GP Farms says it's still nice. We used to go to the Farms Pier to swim in the summer. My dad taught me how to swim by throwing me in the boat well. By the way, there was a Licavoli at Macchus' Red Fox with Jimmy and the Giacalone brothers. I loved both of his books. Looking forward to the third.

This is about the good people of the inner city about whom no suburbanite knows anything. It's a very well told tale.

Good for lovers of the knight, spiced with salsa, an urban renewal in literature, and yet an old fashioned private dick novel

Neo-Nazi bikers...thugs who look like they only eat glass and babies... the madam of an S&M cathouse...a priest who hides and transports undocumented immigrants...a skittish teenage girl hacker — these are some of the characters we meet in Lives Laid Away.Ex-cop August Snow is as wild and weird as any of them. Half Black and half Hispanic, he makes wonderful salsa. He’s also a dead shot and a black belt in karate — fully equipped for action. And there’s plenty in this book.Snow takes on the job of foiling a trafficking operation out of sheer goodness of heart. The victims are supposedly scooped up by ICE for deportation — but in reality, kidnapped for trafficking.Gunfights abound. It’s kind of hard to believe that Snow and friends can get away with roughing up and killing so many bad guys. But I went along with it, because shoot-outs mixed with karate moves are hard to resist.Also, the writing is lively, spiced with street wit and quotes from Bogart and the Bible. The author has a great sense of place too, so that I felt very present in his Detroit. The reign of terror by ICE in ethnic neighborhoods is vividly described.Stephen Mack Jones has a lot of raw talent, perhaps a bit undisciplined, but he’s fun to read.

Former Marine, ex-cop and self-described "rakishly handsome Blaxican," August Snow is the hero of "Lives Laid Away," in this sequel to the author's first mystery novel. When the book begins, he's received a hefty payout from a court case resulting from an incident while on duty and is staying busy perfecting his homemade salsa, taking martial arts lesson and keeping an eye on his neighbors who are being hassled by ICE. When August gets wind of an even bigger potential ongoing crime in his Michigan area home, i.e. human trafficking, after the body of an unidentified young girl dressed as Marie Antoinette washes ashore, he swings into action, along with several other assistants, including Jimmy, his young handyman and neighbor; Tomas, the brawn to his activist wife's Elena's brains; and Ogilvy, a seemingly harmless British man with a penchant for doing yoga on his front porch. August also receives help from Lucy, a Native American hacker whiz and Lady B, whose doughnut shop owner exterior is deceptively benign. With their support, he's well-equipped to take on the underworld of strip clubs, drug dealing and other sleazy doings, which provide clues to identifying who is responsible for the murders of undocumented young women. However, since this involves putting their lives in danger repeatedly, August and his crew will need to have all their wits about them to crack the case and secure justice, however imperfectly.Thoughts: The book starts off intriguingly with a main character who's hardened from his combat experience and tenure as a cop but has a not-so-hidden compassionate streak for the underdog, plus a lot of quirky interests and habits. His neighbors and friends are well-drawn and mostly sympathetic, even when they decide to take justice into their own hands (and hence break the law). However, the author does have an agenda, i.e. championing open borders, which may mar the enjoyment for readers who have an opposite position on the subject. Also, I didn't personally care for the overdone brutality; it seemed like almost every encounter with the bad guys ended with a bullet or an impromptu amputation of a digit.Overall, this is an absorbing mystery, if you have a strong stomach for violence.
