This book was very well written! The author gives excellent instruction and suggestions as he walks you through simple botting. It is very easy to understand and execute. I would high recommend this book!!
I haven’t seen many books on building bots with PHP, so naturally I was curious to find this book. It happens to be brief, so I will review it briefly!The book is 62 pages long. I don’t normally pay attention to the number of pages in a book, understanding first-hand how meaningless that usually is. I’m simply pointing it out so you can understand just how short it is.I’ve read product instruction manuals with more pages than this.It starts with a brief set of setup instructions, with which you can get a functional PHP/Apache setup. Unfortunately there are no instructions for Windows. If you’re using Windows then maybe that’s what you deserve. On the other hand, there are no links to resources where you can learn how to set up, so Windows users are literarily left to fend for themselves.There’s also the usual omission of all syntax highlighting, as seems to be the case with most of Packt’s new books…The book outlines how to build a simple HTTP client and use it in another WebBot class. As far as I can tell, the WebBot class is little more than regular expression parser for returned document bodies.While both of these are neat tricks for new PHP developers to learn, the book’s front cover states the intention of the book is to “enhance your notting skillsâ€. Anybody who has already created notting scripts and is familiar with PHP OOP (which is a requirement for the book) is not going to find this content challenging.Furthermore, these classes are old-hat. You need look no further than Symfony2 for an HTTP client component and DOM parser. Using these would already extend the provided functionality exponentially. Instead of regular expression matching (which is not an easy subject for neophytes to come to terms with) they could be taught how to inspect the DOM using a popular, and tested library.Instead of implementing classes (the function of which they should already be familiar with) to do simple requests and string matching, they could be learning how to use Composer, and how to utilise these excellent components.If the HTTP client section was put into it’s own book about how to write an HTTP client, then I would be sending it to my friends. If the string matcher section was put into it’s own book…oh you get the idea.This book will not challenge intermediate-to-advanced developers. It will not teach beginner developers how to create bot scripts using the right tools. It’s fine if you want to learn the basics of creating HTTP clients and string matchers, but beyond that I would not recommend it.
