The pull out maps were pretty useless. They cover too small a section of the city, and aren't referred to at all in the text. I have to ask why they even bother!Their neighborhood description caused us to pick Yumiko's AirBnB listing. Huge win. The photos are also really good. We basically picked where to go by flipping through the photos at the front of the book and then going there. The restaurant recommendations were also decent. The only thing I can complain about is that they said that if Kyoto is booked solid, you can stay at Nara instead. I think that's a mistake. Unlike Tokyo, Kyoto has next to no subway, so rapid transit from Kyoto station is nearly non-existent. You're stuck with buses, which are really too slow and frustrating to get anywhere quickly. If you're visiting Kyoto, stay in Kyoto. Ignore all advise to do otherwise, in this book or elsewhere.

The author has lived in Kyoto for a while and seems to really appreciate and love the city and that came out in this guide....though take with a grain of salt when he says things like "this is the prettiest street in Japan" or the best this or that. The neighborhood walks were pretty good. I really loved the downtown walk, the north and south Higashiyama walks, and especially the Arashiyama walk. I also got my hotel, good deal in great location, through this guide. I used this guide for a 6 day stay in Kyoto. Would have loved to have stayed longer, but 6 days was good.One thing annoyed me is that the section on Nara as a day trip was cut short, compared with the section on Nara in the Japan-whole-country LP guide book. Same author, just pruned. If I had known, I would have taken that guidebook to Nara, which is 40 minutes away by train and has a lot of cool things to see. The Japan whole country guide additionally included a Nara walk, not reproduced in the Kyoto guide, which I really could have used. This guide also had a better slelection of restaurants than the Tokyo guide, which needed some help.Also, be careful on the walks because sometimes the navigation descriptions could be a little more descriptive, though having Google Maps and a local SIM card helped immensely. Street names are mostly not spelled out in Roman letters, so be wary.Enjoy Kyoto, its a special city.

Don't go to Kyoto without a guide (book); it's a deceptively big small place, and not what you imagine it to be from nice idyllic pictures of the jewels it harbors; it's a big modern city, with subways, buses, and a lot of traffic. The jewel places you come to visit are wide and far apart and require thorough planning for travelling; use this book with a proper map (see review elsewhere). One thing that sets Kyoto apart from say Tokyo is that it is bicyclable, which provides an enjoyable way of getting around. Be aware though that parking can be tricky as the City tries to ban the bikes/bike-parking from most downtown areas. There are several good rental bike shops. Recommend driving along the river, as apart from the 'jewels' the city doesn't seem to have many public park-like areas for people to relax and recreate.

At times, I thought this book was great, other times, I didn't like it as much. Some of the "must sees" were not that great and some highlights were not emphasized as highlights clearly. This was my first lonely planet book and I did not like it that much. The restaurant recommendation I took was okay. It is a small book and its light so it was easy to carry around. This edition (from 2015) felt really dated and there were several errors in times/cost as I moved around Kyoto.

we visited Kyoto for 10 days and we found this book pretty helpful. We ended up keeping it with us the whole time. I really liked the walking tours- especially through Gion area- very well done!! And the pull out map was our main navigation source. Worth the price of the book by itself. I've been using Lonely Planet books since the 80's and this book does not disappoint. Also- it's small and light. Going to Kyoto? get this book.It also included stuff about Nara and a few other places around Kyoto- day trips- so that was nice.

I bought this for and used it on a recent trip to Kyoto. I didn't rely on it as much for food and hotels, but when it came to sightseeing, this guide never steered me wrong. The guide was printed last year, but the information about opening hours and admissions fees was still accurate and reliable. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is spending several days in Kyoto and wanted to know what was worth seeing. It might not be as good for someone who's only going for a day or two, since it will make you want to see and do everything.

Great book which was very useful in preparing for Kyoto trip. We did not go on a tour. So much to see in Kyoto so the hard part is to figure out the subset of sites, temples, and shrines you want to see. If you want to bring only one tour book with you on the trip, this is the one.

Very thorough book on Kyoto. The print is a little small but readable.

Since this book is about the size of your hand, it was appropriately named. However, the small size of the pages(aprox 5"x7") results in many tiny photographs that make it difficult, if not impossible to "see". Being somewhat of a beginner in oil painting, the brush strokes and the techniques of how to actually apply the paint are the most important information to me. I found that the demonstrations and step-by-step instructions in this book to be lacking visually because of their small size and there also seemed to be large gaps in the steps given. One small example is that the timing of each stage of the painting, which in working with oils is critical, is never fully explained. It one respect, it was assumed that one already knew how to mix the paint with mediums, or how much drying time to allow between steps. Yet there seems to be much attention given to information that is needed only by one who is painting for the very first time. (such as discussions on supplies) There is a large variety of subject material in this book, but with only a little information about each one.

I took up oil painting when I acquired a starter kit somebody had bought and then become bored with, and while I can't draw or paint, I figured that it'd be a waste of time since I can't even draw, but I'd fool with the paint since I had it, and I borrowed a couple of library books to help me along. This was one of the books I checked out, and I liked it so much, I decided to buy it. It makes oil painting so simple. You just flip through it and it explains everything about the uses of tools, colors, and various effects. There's not a whole lot of importance placed on certain convoluted steps you just HAVE to do in order to do it right, or any of the things that always scared me away from taking an art class. That's my favorite part about this book, that it does away with the intimidating nature of learning to paint. It is as it says, a practical guide. If I want a certain effect, I look for an example that has such an effect, and read the surrounding text to see how to create it. It has wonderful color charts that I use for just about everything, from matching colors in a photo to figuring out whether I need to buy a new tube of paint to create a certain color. It explains all the stuff on the shelves at my art store, and the uses of those items, so I don't have to ask the clerk who may or may not know anything about oil painting. When I'm out of ideas, or just wanting to play around with leftover paint, it has suggested subjects to practice. I feel so confident with the basic knowledge this book has provided that I'm no longer hesitant to take a class in oil painting.

I'm a amateur artist who, after an absence of painting for a year, thought it would be good to read up on technique before I began painting again. I was not impressed. Both the images and the instruction were lacking. I've read much better intro art books. I don't believe this book would help a beginner, amateur, or professional. I would recommend looking for a different book.

My husband was looking forward to getting this book after examining one in our local library and when he got this one there were several pages missing and a color chart he especially wanted had also been torn out. I wouldn't even rate it a one star. Very disappointed.

This is a good book for beginners and for anyone interested in the art of oil painting since it provides an "introduction", or general overview, into oil painting since it covers all the basic techniques, tips, and tricks. It may not be for those who want a more detailed step-by-step type of instruction manual (get a video or take an art class). Yet it is easy to read with short chapters that stand alone as reference. Book has lots of colorful pictures of paintings from famous artists so you can see the types of painting styles it talks about. A decent manual, inspirational and highly recommended reading.

Introduction: The Sexual Allure of Outsiders Who Take Risks The first three volumes of Best Women's Erotica of the Year didn't have official themes, but when I was compiling Volume 4, I decided I wanted stories on the themes of Outsiders and Risk. While on the surface those may seem incongruous, both spoke to me regarding current events and seemed urgently relevant. At a time when outsiders of many kinds are being ostracized, discriminated against, and shunned, I wanted to explore what being an outsider feels like on a deeply personal level. I always want the authors I publish to turn readers on, but this time, I also want to make you think. The outsiders you'll read about here sometimes grapple with navigating a new culture, as in "Aftershock," by Jo Henny Wolf, or the constraints of their own culture, such as the tender, heartbreaking longing in "Seven Sweets and Seven Sours," by Megan Hart. In Eliza David's "Protest of Passion," a community organizer finds herself swept away by a different kind of passion than the one motivating her lover. I left it to my authors to define what exactly an outsider means to them and their characters. All of us have likely been outsiders at one time or another, depending on the circumstances. Outsiders may be able to learn something about themselves via insiders, and in the process enjoy some hot sex, as happens in "The Pick-Me-Up," by Suleikha Snyder. Sometimes it's hard to say who the outsider is, such as in Alyssa Cole's sexy science fiction tale, "Essential Qualities." The bisexual protagonist of Calliope Bloom's "O Captain! My Captain!" ventures into unknown territory with her new lovers, going from outsider to insider as she takes a risk that pays off. Taking risks in the face of fear has certainly cropped up in past volumes, but the risks the characters take in these stories are heightened. Sometimes these risks are erotic in nature, like trying something new for the first time, for instance posing for an erotic calendar, as the heroine of "Take the Shot," by Mica Kennedy, does, or starring in a gang bang, like Julie in "Beautiful Dirty Wonderful," by R. M. Wood. Sometimes the risk itself is a turn-on, such as the illicit but utterly arousing behavior of the naughty narrator in "The Dressing Room," by Alessandra Torre. Sometimes these risks, while sexual in nature, involve confronting aspects of these characters' core selves that require a great amount of bravery. In "Her Invisible Prison," by Jocelyn Dex, Eden faces a battle between her desire and her agoraphobia. Her steps out of that "prison" are hard fought and all the more exciting. And lest you think a story involving mental health can't be scorching hot, Dex will surely prove you wrong. Similarly, in "Baby Doll," by Sienna Saint-Cyr, Heather pursues her fetish only with the very careful reassurance of her lover. Many of these stories involve finding community of one sort or another, whether that's the world of rodeo bull riders in "Eight Seconds," by Madeline Moore, or kink club BDSM as in "Belonging," by Tamsen Parker. While passion and desire are at the heart of these tales, there's more happening than simple arousal. There's a little something for everyone, I'd like to think, within these pages, from the woman going back to school who gets an education beyond the books in "With Honors," by Sofia Quintero, to a divorced woman getting seduced by a learned man in "Words with Benefits," by Tamara Lush. Sometimes I enjoy erotica simply for the sake that it's so foreign from my own life, that it offers a complete escape. And you'll definitely find stories in here with such unique scenarios, they would be difficult/impossible to replicate. (You'll also find a diverse set of characters that come alive in a matter of pages. I saw myself in some of them, and enjoyed the experiences of others like I would as if they were a good friend telling me about the incredible night they had over coffee the next morning.)But the erotica I enjoy most are well-written stories that give me new naughty ideas I can try out for myself. As a queer/pansexual switchy individual, let's just say I got a lot out of this book. I was especially relieved to find powerful dominant femmes in more than one story.The theme of the collection is Outsiders and Risk and each writer takes the theme in a new direction. For me, one of the pleasures of reading the book is waiting for the "risk" to reveal itself. The risks are often a major part of the erotic build-up, kicking these stories into sensual overdrive.In many of the stories, the concept of outsiders manifests through a narrator with a marginalized component in their identity, such as race or disability. The editor always does a good job of creating a refreshingly inclusive anthology, which makes me even more inclined to support the series.

This book isn't perfect, but I'm still giving it 5 stars because it provides a better overview of the entire field of Machine Learning than any other book I've come across. My background is in computer science and software engineering and I've been interested ML as more of a hobbyist and outside observer for a few years (reading some books, taking Andrew NG's coursera course), just recently dabbling in some applications professionally. What I was still missing before reading this book was as high a level understanding of where all of the models and technique in the field of ML fit. Other books describe the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning, but this book goes further in describing how, say, decisions trees, support vector machines and deep neural networks fit compared to each other and within which subfields statistics play a larger role than others.The book also puts many techniques in historical perspective that I found very helpful, such as the rise, fall and rise again of deep neural networks with support vector machines taking a lead as the hottest technique in between (while also making clear that SVMs are a useful technique with unique strengths today). Finally, it makes clear that these techniques are not all competing for being the best overall at everything, but that they can be used quite complementary and/or they have unique strengths within certain problem domains. The book accomplishes all of this through a survey of broad subfields of ML, how each has attempted to be *the* master algorithm, has fallen short in some ways, but remains the best at some things and could play a role in the state of the art master algorithm (while acknowledging we're not quite there yet). So while the term 'master algorithm' is somewhat of a gimmick (as he acknowledges), it's a good way to think about what ML is attempting to accomplish as a field: building working, adaptive software systems with less and less human assistance by learning from data, and to see how many specific techniques have played a role in progress.What I don't know is how accessible this book might be to someone who's less technical. I think the first couple chapters would be a great read for anyone with a general interest, making clear how ML differs from the traditional software / automation that has brought us so far, but it could be that the details within the rest of the chapters that go into more depth would be too in the weeds.I've also read some other reviews from technical readers that assert the book lacks enough depth to be helpful, but this wasn't the case for me, in fact the level of detail was perfect—just deep enough to match with details I'd skimmed before in previous surveys of the field yet not so deep that I couldn't get through and enjoy the chapters in a casual evening read. The author also explained some concepts better than I've read anywhere else before, such as the debate is between frequentist and bayesian statisticians.

The Master Algorithm is a reasonable overview of the growing field of machine learning. The author explores the idea of there being a master algorithm which could explain everything given enough data. The idea seems a bit over the top when initially phrased but the real purpose of the book is to introduce ideas used in machine learning and how they work and are used to solve problems.The book is split into multiple chapters which start from discussing abstractly the master algorithm and then move on to some of the philosophical issues associated with using such algorithms. In particular the author discusses at the core of believing in pattern recognition algorithms is belief in inductive reasoning. The author discusses human learning and gets into some neuroscience and how neural networks are constructed. The reader gets a vague sense of Hebbian learning and how neuron weighting are at the core of neural networks. The author spends a lot of time discussing various approaches in machine learning and gives the reader an intuitive feel of Bayesian learning. The author was an originator in a particular algorithm called naïve Bayes which greatly simplified solutions to certain problems and so the author introduces his ideas to the reader. Other machine learning ideas are introduced like genetic programming and multivariable regression. The author also discusses other machine learning algorithms which turn data into a vector and then look for close neighbors of the vector to classify the input. The author also spends some time on how unsupervised learning would look. The book combines computer science ideas and intuition and tries to use a fictitious robot as the means to convey ideas about how a computer would learn. The author finally introduces his own master algorithm called alchemy which combines most of the models described in the book. The reader really gets little actual sense of what's going on in the algorithm as the author qualifies one needs a PhD in computer science.The Master Algorithm is the first book I have seen which introduces some of the ideas being used in machine learning to a general audience. It does so quite well and most of the ideas are absorbable. At the same time there are a few too many instances where the author is self promoting talking about all of the brilliant ideas he has had which have reshaped the field and how other areas of AI research of the past or Kurzweil and his singularity concept are idiotic. Despite probably being right in much of his analysis its arguing with no one on the other side and unproductive. Also the flavor of the writing is odd - it turns into some fantasy literature at times as though that makes the subject more digestible and in fact makes it more irritating. I enjoyed reading aspects of the book and do think the parts on what different schools of machine learning focus on are well written for a non expert, unfortunately there are many other parts of the book which one wants to get through as quickly as possible.

AWESOME OVERVIEW OF ML IDEASI have read a few textbooks on machine learning (intro to Statistical Learning by Hastie etc) and so I would say that my knowledge of ML is at the "textbook overview" level. Since I am not a ML practitioner, I may not be the best judge of a book such as this one, it was a fairly difficult read, and I know I need to read the book a second time to get an even greater appreciation and understanding of the concepts covered by the author. That being said, it was a very enjoyable book. The book was very different from any ML book that I've read or checked out either at a bookstore or online. I think one needs to have some knowledge of ML to appreciate the book - concepts like supervised learning, unsupervised learning, Bayesian inference, support vector machines, neural networks, etc .... The book deserves a 5-star rating because it added a lot of value to my understanding of ML, and increased my desire and curiosity to learn more about the field of ML ....

This is a great book and covers everything but this book is certainly not for someone without prior knowledge of machine learning and good understand of some principles.At the start of the book, Pedro mentions that this book is written for the layman but it's not.I gave this book to a friend of mine before I read it and he was like "doode this is not for laymen, I didn't understand a thing".While the book is great for seasoned programmers and those starting with machine learning and good knowledge of some concepts, this book ain't for someone who wants to know more about machine learning and algorithms.I still give it 5 because Pedro is a great guy and this book is indepth.

Cannon does a fine job of evoking life in a small suburb of Nottingham during the heatwave of 1976, and her characterizations of the 10-year-olds Grace and Tilly are affectionate, perceptive, and (for the most part) convincing. The various mysteries in the novel (not all of them solved) will keep most readers interested, but ultimately they're less significant than the dark hints and minor revelations casually dropped along the way. The writing itself is occasionally a bit too precious, especially in the early chapters--but I think a little overwriting is understandable (and forgivable) in a first novel.My one suggestion is to read The Trouble with Goats and Sheep on your own--not as required reading for some blasted group-thinking book club..

I had read an ad for this book stating something like "if you have to read a book twice this summer, make it this one." So I bought it and read it. it is written from the honest perspective of a 10 year old who associates with another 10 year old of a different ilk and all her neighbors on a particular circle in England. The author does a good job of keeping it in the child's voice, quoting exactly what she hears the adults or teenagers around her saying, whether she comprehends it or not (we as the readers, of course, do). So, it's all about one's perceptions of the others we live in close proximity of, true or false. Hysterical are the children's interpretation of the preacher's words, though, hence the title concerning the separation of sheep and goats. My own take on this from my own childhood was that if the sheep were at God's right hand, was that understood by placing oneself in God's place and looking to my right, or was this from the view point of the throngs in front of God and looking at him and to OUR right which would be His left. Oh dear. I think this book showed that it's kind of all the same...

I almost did not pick up this book because I had seen a review billing it as a coming of age novel--I disagree. While two of the main characters are 10 years old, there is an entire neighborhood of central characters that are middle aged and elderly. What a good book! Loved the theme--two kids looking for God who is everywhere, while the mystery of a missing women is solved in the back story.

Brilliant, engaging storytelling - I loved it. I remember the long hot summer of 1976 - it was glorious - and this book conjures up those hot dusty days. It also conjures up the miasma of suspicion, guilt, jealousy - and general mystery which surrounds one small street in a back water of middle England - seen through the eyes of two young girls. The main character - Grace - is far from perfect. In fact there is one moment at least when she is incredibly unlikeable, and her behaviour is appalling...but she makes up for it later. Most of the characters are not really very nice people - they adopt an inward looking mentality - and the person who is the subject of their wrath pays a dreadful price. At first I wondered if I had been hoping for a neater ending; a sort of 'Poirot assembled all the main suspects in the drawing room' denouement - but then I realised that the ending was actually perfect. What ACTUALLY happened had been drip fed to the reader through comments and asides - and was all the more surprising as a result. The writing is great - the descriptions are artistic and colourful but never become tedious. All in all it is just a great read.

Well, there were a few things I liked about this book. It did finish it, which I guess says something about its ability to hold my attention. And I liked Tilly as a character, who resembled Sadness in the movie “Inside Out.” And, for the most part Joanna Cannon writes well. Unfortunately, she likes to show off, which became one of my major irritations with this book. How often, for example, would you expect to hear a ten-year-old using the word “herbaceous”? She could have benefitted by spending some time at a Joe Fridays “Just the facts, ma’am” school of writing. It was often difficult to get into the story because the focus always seem to shift back to “See what a great writer I am?” The structure contributed to that problem in that she chose to switch back and forth between a first and third person narrative. When you are in a first person narrative, you live in the head of that person (or in some cases, several different people). In a third person narrative you observe the action as an invisible spectator. But one that shifts back and forth inevitably keeps bringing you back to the mind of the author who is using this as a device.In striving to be entertaining, she often stretched the bounds of credulity. While it may be cute for a couple of girls to go in search of God on the Avenue, how many 10-year-olds do you know who still believe in Santa Claus? In general, character development seemed weak with each individual notable primarily for one negative trait.The switching back and forth between past and present, while necessary for plot development, was at times confusing. I am not dyslexic but I still had a difficult time distinguishing past and present between 1976 and 1967.In searching for unique turns of phrases, she seems to have developed an acute sense of hearing that most of us don’t possess. We are made to hear “elbows nudging each other,” someone “smiling so much, I was worried someone might hear,” “the sound of cutlery resting on a plate,” temperature “sharpening the volume” of crowd noise, “springs in the armchair wake up and yawn,” and a “choir of color singing for my attention” from an array of dahlias and geraniums.

I thought this book had a lot of potential....even the title had a good meaning. I liked how the chapters were organized by address/character and each chapter revealed a bit more about the "mystery". However the character development was poor, leaving the reader confused and questioning. And the ending was a disappointment. We read it in my book club and all agreed we wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

This book is loaded with good information on restoring an old car. It has some information on repairing collision damage,but the focus is really on doing great paint jobs on older cars including replacing rusted body panels. Rust proofing,materials, techniques are all covered. This book also suggests where you can buy something and what to buy - useful information.There is a chapter on fiberglass (Corvette) bodies also. I would certainly give it 5 stars if it were not for the old black andwhite photos used. In the photos it is difficult to see what is going on.I think someone with limited experience painting cars would greatly benefit, although I am not sure I would recommend itto someone who knows nothing about auto body repair and painting.

I found the information in this book to be lacking in sufficient detail for a novice. It is written from a point of view as if the reader should already know the details of the subject matter. Black and white photographs throughout. A much better book is "How to Paint Your Car: Revised and Updated" from Motorbooks Workshop.

I like doing car repair but am a total novice at body work. I was looking for a book that covers all the basics with clear instructions for newbies like myself. although I have not started any of my planned projects yet, This looks like it will be the perfect resource to guide me through the process. Very complete on materials, sources, techniques, potential problems and more.

I found this book well written and informative for me, a beginner in body repair and painting. It covered most facets of body repair and painting. It's not an encyclopedia - for instance, the author mentions "slapping" and what it is used for, but doesn't delve into how to do it - perhaps that would be best for a book on metal working. All in all, this was just the ticket for me to touch upon all the subjects.

I have a Girl Scout troops, and when I found this book at the library I knew I had to purchase it for future reference. It has tons of games I played as a kid in the 70's and tons more I have never heard of before. In a world where kids only play games that require a battery, it's nice to have a reference of great games that build team work and increase exercise.

As a relative "old timer" living in a technologically oriented world, I'm often queried by my young friends what I did as a child with no Internet, no video games, and no DVD player. "The Art of Stone Skipping" is a great resource for all the activities I did as a child, as well as describing the infinite pleasures of using your imagination. I would recommend it for anyone who's interested in how to play without technology.

My grandchildren and I have had the best time trying out all these low-tech activities, much to the joy and surprise of my little darlings!

I'm so happy to have found this book! This summer, I was so tired of watching my children wasting days inside with their heads bent over their tablets, playing video games. Since we discovered Stone Skipping, we have had tons of fun, together! We have been playing outside actually interacting with each other. What a great way to reconnect with your family! I highly recommend this to any parent who is losing your children to the tech world. Love, love, love it!

I really enjoy the writings of Jan Fries for two major reasons, 1. The length and breadth of his knowledge is impressive and it shows through like a torch in the night in all of his books. And 2. His candor, he does not shy away from stating his own personal feelings as well as being willing, able and honest in diving deep into the "darker" more "chthonic" side of topics.Now Kali Kaula is a wonderful book, especially now a-days for a western and predominately new age audience who has an interest in the subject covered and I share his animosity in that you have to wade through tons of crap before you get to a book that is not some new age fixation on sex and/or westernized interpretations of what actually is taught.I don't have a large knowledge base in tantric traditions, but its subject has always been a big interest of mine as I have been a great lover of Maha Kali, almost all of my adult life. So I initially purchased this book with the hopes that it would deepen my understanding of not only tantra but also Kali Ma, which it did.One of the biggest things that I learned is the term Tantra is really just a place holder, for a vast school of Hindu teachings, Tantra we learn means "texts" (basically), and that there are several school most notably Kriya and Kaula which are what most think of when they think of Tantric Teachings.Fries, goes into great depth of the history of Tantra without becoming to drawn out and the original artwork done by the author are great. I particularly enjoyed the Night Side interpretation of Ganesha, as he sat on the cremation grounds. Particularly as one of his notable characteristics is as a remover of obstacles.Now I can’t sing high praises for this book in totality for two reasons, 1. Jan Fries, albeit a wonderful author, can get pretty dry when he steps away from historical information and into explaining the teachings specifically, as they read much like stereo instructions. Cut and Dry. This can get pretty boring fast as you go from one to the next explanation explaining posture and breath, but I can’t knock him too hard for this because if you read them and apply them, which I have done with many of his works, they do what he says they will. Even though dry, it doesn't leave room for error if you are given instructions without a bunch of filler you have to wade through.The second reason, and quite honestly the only reason why I gave this book four stars rather than the five it deserves, and I do feel a bit petty about this but I will state it anyways, is the book is ungodly expensive, which avalonia publishing is well known for doing. Granted I understand that we are looking at a niche market of a niche market when it comes to Fries writings, and the author should get there well and do in profit for writing such texts. At least give a book that is top quality for the price. Now the book is bound average, the paper is average and the cover is average. But I’m sorry if you expect me to pay over 35 dollars for a soft cover book, and then I expect to get a top quality book. Granted, I have paged through avalonia's hard covered versions of Fries books, and they are really good quality, but 65 + dollars, (*(*&%*(&%&^!!! You have to be kidding, you might as well tack on "University of...." when you put the publisher because you are right up there with college presses. Ok, off my soap box.Overall this is a good book, if Tantra interests you this is a wonderful book to start with, or for that matter base much of your backbone practices on. But keep in mind you are just going to have to tell yourself your paying all that money for the content and not book quality. Granted I will agree, High quality book with s*** for content is certainly worse....Worth a read!

As a long-time practitioner of Kaula Tantra I THOUGHT I knew a great deal about Tantra, especially of the Kaula Variety. This work is a stunning tour de force in which the author has CLEARLY studied and researched the subject very thoroughly. His work is clear and convincing, and he is the first to say when he doesn't know something completely, or is not an authority on this or that aspect. At the same time, I cannot imagine the depth of effort that was put into this book, and it humbled me as to my actual lack of knowledge on the depth and breadth of the subject. A tedious read in some ways, not because it's complicated or poorly written, but becuase of the massive amount of material that you just want to slow down and digest it. Overall a truly magnificent work that I highly recommend if you are a SERIOUS student of real Tantra and not New Age sex passing itself off as genuine Tantra.

dont know that this book deserves the moniker "a manual of Tantric Magick" as it really doesnt detail extensive sadhana or go into much detail on yantras and how to use them or other magical practices. The information on Mantra is a little stilted because the author insists on using antiquated spelling for Sanskrit words instead of a phoenetic spelling. Other reviewers really liked the artwork. I did not particularly care for the style but supose the book is better for having these illustrations. This is very informative giving a lot of detail about Tantra and several introductory practices. The author obviously cares a great deal about the subject and does a good job at gathering together such a large amount of information. The author also obviously has an extent of actual practice in the techniques expounded. This is a very good book and I enjoyed it very much but was hoping for something a little diferent based on the title. Perhaps I was expecting less of an overview and more of a detailed practice. There are quite a few exercises and the authors love of results not authority is refreshing and welcome. Still a very good book and highly recommended. One thing which does deserve special mention is the authors treatment of the subject of spirit lovers, this is becoming increasingly evident as a method used by mystics and magicians of the higher grades of adepthood and it is a valid practice, it is also covered by Jason Newcomb in his book sexual sorcery to some extent and by Donald Tyson in greater detail in his books Familiar Spirits and Sexual Alchemy. Spirit lovers can directly manipulate the nervous system and depending on their grade also manipulate the nadis and energy body. A word of warning is perhaps necessary, after having sex with a spirit you may no longer want to have sex with a human being, all of the implications of this should be considered before beginning this kind of relationship. However a great deal of actual initiation, and liberation does arise from this type of relationship... It is very freeing on many levels not to be reliant on human beings for sex, it does drastically alter ones consciousness to have these types of experiences which are probably safest in a Hindu context. It is a good book but not much of a manual of practical Magick so much as an overview with some introductory techniques and exercises.

The knowledge and experience in this book wouldtake a lifetime looking to find elsewhere. JF's easywriting style plus his own illustrations gives the readerthe best info since Arthur Avalon.

Very interesting. The most thorough scholarly work I have come across in terms of offering translations of tracts from ancient texts in the tantra tradition. Nevertheless, written in a very straightforward style.and eminently practical.

I have just begun to read this, and am totally intrigued. It is an excellent overview of this branch of fascinating and startling practices. Not at all dry and pedantic, it pulls no punches in letting you know that this is not necessarily for everybody. There is so much in this book, as I could see just by perusing the table of contents. I recommend it highly for all those interested in hardcore tantra.
